Infolgedessen sind in saurer Lösung äquivalente Mengen von beispielsweise Permanganat nötig, um Wasserstoffsuperoxyd vollständig zu zersetzen, während in alkalischer Lösung bekanntlich schon ganz geringe Mengen Permanganat dazu genügen. Bringt man beide miteinander in Reaktion, so wird nur ein geringer Teil des Permanganate mit umgesetzt.
