SOClETA ITALIANASOClETA ITALIANA
The barium oxide obtained in the electric furnace offers the possibility of conversion into superoxide much greater difficulty than that obtained by other means. . As is well known the production of barium superoxide succeeds from the chemically produced The more porous the latter, the lighter the barium oxide, and is therefore recommended for the the best for this is the barium oxide obtained by annealing barium nitrate. Since now that Electrically obtained barium oxide does not in itself form a porous mass, so it is explained from this the previous view that the barium oxide obtained electrically is the higher Oxidation is more difficult to access. As has been found, however, the latter behaves contrary to expectations, just the opposite, d. H. when finely ground it takes a lot light oxygen - like a porous mass.
According to the invention, therefore, the electrically obtained barium oxide becomes as fine as possible ground and presented in thin layers to the oxygen or a stream dryer and carbonic acid-free air under pressure. But this measure alone is not enough in itself to convert the barium oxide completely into superoxide. Because that's electric produced barium oxide always contains barium carbide, which is already at lower Temperature than is necessary for the higher oxidation of the barium oxide by the oxygen is oxidized to barium oxide and carbonic acid. Since this oxidation is an exothermic Is a process, a considerable amount of heat is developed, and through this it melts at the same time barium superoxide formed to a small extent and prevents the access of oxygen to the barium oxide and hence its higher oxidation. To avoid this, therefore, the barium oxide is used the introduction of the oxygen or the air first to one below or near the The red heat is carefully heated and therefore essentially at only a lower temperature Formation of superoxide decomposes the barium carbide, whereupon the cooled mass finely grinds it again and now exposes it to the action of oxygen in red-hot heat.
The pressure at which the oxygen or the air containing it to act is brought to the heated barium oxide, is 1 to 2 atm. Overpressure; it It is recommended, however, to only use this for the second treatment of the barium oxide Apply oxygen to the first glow under ordinary atmospheric pressure and lower glowing heat only the decomposition of any barium carbide present to achieve the lowest possible formation of barium peroxide.
