Zum Festhalten geöffneter bezw. geschlossener Fenster und Thüren benutzte man bisher einfache Haken, die aus starkem Draht gebogen wurden und in eine Oese einzugreifen hatten, wodurch die Feststellung des Fensters oder der Thür erfolgte. Diese Einrichtung erforderte stets einen gleichen Abstand der Oese vom Befestigungspunkte des Hakens und ermöglichte daher nicht, Fenster oder Thüren verschieden weit offen zu halten; auch ändert sich oft der Spielraum zwischen Thür und Thürfüllung, besonders wenn die Thür der Witterung ausgesetzt ist, so dafs dann ein Einhaken nicht erfolgen kann.
