Abstract
The air movers for use in tunnels e.g. for high speed inter-city rail stations receive their fresh air and remove the spent air through intake and outlet shafts in normal way and are fitted with thermal and cooling elements which direct the air flow and maintain this direction of flow throughout the operation. The air movers produce a self-contained circuit of boundary air without the use of locks etc to close off still-air zones and in this way form a turbulent air curtain (16) between the air layers requiring to be held apart, using conventional mechanical and aerodynamic (17, 18) systems to maintain this. The air flow in the tunnel should be held at optimum level with the aid of measuring and regulating instruments.
