basisBase
The invention relates to a powder coating composition Cellulose acetate butyrate base, consisting of particles from 10 to 200 microns in size, which are excellent for coating of heatable objects and after application to the object to be layered and after heating by confluence or fusing the powder particles together to form a coating with an unexpectedly high resistance to hydrolysis.
It is well known that a wide variety of coatings can be used for coating commercial items, e.g. fridges, washing masks, Kitchen appliances, steel plates, wall parts and the like, Use solutions of a coating compound and brush and spray them onto the surface to be coated, whereupon the solvent component of the solution is evaporated. During In recent years, other coating processes have also been developed. Hines of this coating process consists in the material used for the coating on the surface to apply the object to be oescnicntenden in the form a powder that can be melted together by the action of heat, which, besides the material providing the actual coating, is different May contain additives, e.g. plasticizers and pigments, vv whether the coating compound after application by action melted together by heat into a continuous coating will. It is known to be collapsible by exposure to heat Use polymeric cellulose acetate butyrates. It has shown si ca jedocii that many of the previously known powdery Cellulose acetate butyrate coating compositions are unsuitable for many applications because of the resistance the generated Beschicntungen is too low to hydrolysis.

Das Zerkleinern der Pellets kannThe production of a powder coating composition according to the invention can be carried out by customary known methods. This means that the used to produce the coating composition Components after they have been mixed together, for example on one heatable two-roller spray can be homogenized or extruded whereupon the homogenized material is solidified by cooling and comminuted into pellets. These pellets can then grind to a powder of the desired particle size e.g. to particles having an average particle size of about 75 microns, the powder being particles of e.g. contains about 50 to 105 microns. The powder-form coating compositions according to the invention can be produced for producing continuous coatings on the surfaces of the most varied of heatable moldings. A heatable molded body is to be understood as meaning those which are able to withstand temperatures of approximately 176 ° C. to 218 ° C. without being deformed, without charring or decomposing. Examples of such heatable fibers are those made of steel, copper, aluminum and other metals, also moldings made of glass, ceramic materials, thermosetting resins, e.g. phenolic resins, urea-formaldehyde resins and urea-melamine resins, and also moldings made of thermosetting plastic materials, e.g. thermosetting polyesters and crystalline polyesters, for example from polyethylene terephthalate.
The pulverulent coating compositions can be prepared according to customary known methods Coating process on the surfaces of the moldings be applied, for example by means of spray guns, by electrostatic deposition or by deposition from a fluidized bed or other conventional powder coating processes. After the powder coating material has been deposited this is heated to a temperature that is high enough for the individual particles to flow together and melt together can produce a smooth, uniform, continuous, Adhesive coating free of holes on the surface of the object to be coated. Since the Cellulose acetate butyrate powder compositions according to the invention are amorphous compositions, if they do not have a sharp melting point, they can be however, will melt within a practical temperature range of about 176-232 ° C.

Keine der Schichten brach, wenn sie mittels eines 3,175 - 38,1 mm konischen Domes gekrümmt wurden.100 parts by weight of a cellulose acetate butyrate of the specified composition were by means of hot rollers with 10 parts by weight an addition copolymer of 70 mol-I methyl methacrylate and 30 mol% ethyl methacrylate, commercially available under the name Acryloid D-44, manufacturer Rohm and Haas Company, USA, 25 parts by weight of titanium dioxide and 1 part by weight of a heat stabilizer (Carstab SN) cut. The mixture was cryogenically ground and then sieved through a 150 mesh screen. The the Powder passing through the sieve was then used for electrostatic coating of cleaned steel plates, phosphate steel plates and cleaned aluminum plates used at 80 KV. The coated panels were then placed in an oven that had an air circulation system was equipped. The panels were heated in the oven at 26 ° C for 10 minutes. After removing the panels from the Oven and cooling the same resulted in all cases producing firmly adhering cellulose acetate butyrate coatings on the steel plates had been. The adhesion of the coatings to the plates was surprisingly achieved by immersing the plates in Water at 25 ° C for 30 days, not reduced. The coatings furthermore could not be stripped from the metal plates with a knife. The generated Do not strip layers with tape that sticks to the coatings after they had been scratched crosswise with a razor. All coatings exhibited a smooth and shiny appearance. The impact resilience of the coatings, as measured by a Gardner Impact Tester, was 80 inch-pounds of the coated one Side and at 80 inch-pounds on the back. Each of the two masses was divided into two parts. Two different experiments were carried out in which the coating compositions were applied to different objects. The powdered coating compositions were heated by applying to the coated shaped bodies for 10 minutes at 163 ° C, whereas applied to the molded body liquid coatings 45 minutes were heated at 9 3 0 C long, according to Examples 1, 2 and 3 of US PS 2,849,409.
The adhesion of the layers produced was measured before and after exposure determined by water on the layers. The results reflecting the hydrolysis resistance of the layers are shown in the following Table II compiled.

The invention thus enables the generation of hydrolysis-resistant coatings on a variety of surfaces, for example on surfaces of metal, glass, ceramics, thermosetting plastic compounds, starting from a powdered coating material at relatively low application temperatures, for example temperatures of 190.5 0 C. The generated Layers adhere firmly to the applied surfaces, are tough and flexible and have high impact strengths. In addition, they are free from surface defects and holes. Of particular importance is the high resistance to hydrolysis compared to the hydrolysis resistance of coating compounds that are produced from solutions.
