Abstract

A sieve for plastics processing machines, esp. extruders is fitted between the extruder and the mould. A moving assembly comprising sieve frame, sieve and sieve support plate has a number of parallel rows of holes which constitute the sieve for filtering inhomogeneities out of the plastics. During the extrusion process, this assembly slides slowly relative to the fixed housing so that each row of holes in turn becomes aligned with a row of discharge passages in the fixed housing, which discharge to atmosphere. These passages are on the upstream side of the sieve which, in this region, is cut off from the supply coming from the extruder; thus the flow is reversed through the sieve holes aligned with the passages, causing these holes to be back-flushed. A control valve enable the individual holes of a row to be connected to atmosphere one at a time.
