Ein sonstiger weiterer Zusatz von Kohlenstoff ist dagegen bei dem Verfahren nicht erforderlich. Die Umsetzung zwischen den Verbindungen des Zinkes und dem Eisen, sei es, daß solches von Anfang an metallisch vorhanden oder erst im Laufe des Verfahrens erzeugt wird, geht jedoch nur im schmelzflüssigen Zustande vor sich; man kann daher mit Vorteil auch flüssige zinkhaltige Schlacken ausnutzen, wie solche z. B. auf vielen Blei- und Kupferhütten fallen. Solche flüssige Schlacken, Erze oder andere zinkhaltige Stoffe in feurig- , flüssiger Form läßt man, zusammen mit Eisenspänen oder Eisenschwamm in den Flammenofen einlaufen, wo dann infolge des von der vorigen Charge vorhandenen, vorher hoch erhitzten Schlackenbades sofort die Reaktion eintritt und vollständig verlaufen kann, weil die zum Verlauf der endothermen Reaktionen nötige Wärmemenge dem Schlackenbade entzogen werden kann.
