Description

KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL

PATENTAMTPATENT OFFICE

The outer shape or "skin" of the ship vessels under consideration here is formed strip through longitudinal sheet metal, which is abstracted analogously to the wooden planks on wooden ships and attached with their respective ends to the fore and aft stems; the longitudinal connection takes place by laying one on top of the other and rows of rivets. These sheet metal planks are but not completely smooth, since a hull formed in this way would not have strength, but rather they are "overtaken" round inwards at their lower edges and with a corresponding one strong continuous wire insert. A sheet metal plank made in this way forms a kind of truss structure by itself due to its fixed connection with the stems, its strength by riveting to the other planks and the resulting spherical ship shape is significantly increased.
