Abstract

A seawater desalination plant has a reactor chamber in which the sea water passes by electrodes which have either a positive or negative electrostatic charge. The electrodes are coated with a plastic electrical insulating material. The electrodes further bear an ionic-exchange coating which is either anodic or cathodic. Water flows continually through the electrode array, which his subject to continued reversal of polarity, thereby releasing ions at regular intervals.

Description

The desalination of sea water is one for many countries interesting technology to get drinking and industrial water. Both developing countries as well as countries in desert areas often have access to sea water but for humans, animals and agriculture too little useful water.

Previous methods for desalination go often based on the principle of reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration. With high pressure, the sea water is pressed here by membranes that hold back the salt. With the technology presented here, it should be possible to desalinate large-scale seawater using the flow principle.

The ions of the sea water are said to be bind to electrodes coated with ion exchange materials namely the anions on the anion exchanger (+) of the anodes and the Cations on cation exchangers (-) of the cathodes. In the sense of a cycle lässen by simply reversing the polarity of the electrodes desorb previously absorbed ions. And in such a cycle, sea water can desalted in almost any amount.
