Auch werden beim Anbau und bei der Verarbeitung von Baumwolle in hohem Maße Chemikalien, insbesondere Pestizide, mit umweltschädlicher Wirkung verwendet. Weiterhin fehlen zum Baumwolleanbau genutzte landwirtschaftliche Flächen etwa für die Lebensmittelproduktion. Andererseits zeichnen sich derartige Handtuchbänder durch eine hohe Wasseraufnahmekapazität und damit durch einen hohen Energieeinsatz bei deren Reinigung und Trocknung aus.
