Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present disclosure relates to a shruti guitar musical instrument with equal tempered 22 frets in each octave/saptaka.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The ancient treatises on Indian music such as those by Bharata Natyashastra and Sangita Ratnakara by Sharangadeva offer opportunities for scholarly study of ancient systems of knowledge and practices. The concept of 'Shruti' and the Shruti Nidarshanam Experiment offers such a possibility. This experiment establishes and confirms the existence of 22 equally tempered Shrutis/Microtones. A textual description of this experiment is found in the Natyashastra. Dr Vinod Vidwans designed and built a Bharat Veena (a microtonal Veena) in 2016. He performed this experiment on the Shruti through Veena for empirical validation. The results of this experiment agreed unequivocally with the textual description. However, these guitars are based on traditional designs and lack the ability to reproduce microtones with high accuracy and play innovative chords.

In view of the foregoing discussion, it is clear that there is a need for a shruti guitar musical device that allows for the reproduction of microtones with a high degree of accuracy, as well as the playing of innovative chords.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present disclosure seeks to provide a Shruti Guitar musical device capable of reproducing microtones with high accuracy as well as playing innovative chords. The shruti guitar is a new musical instrument inspired by the 2000 year old shruti theory described in Bharata Muni's Natyashastra. Shrutis are the microtones used very subtly in Indian music. Shruti Guitar is of great importance because it revives the equally tempered 22 Shrutis paradigm of ancient Indian musical heritage. This is the theoretical meaning and importance of the shruti guitar instrument.

In one embodiment, a shruti guitar musical device is disclosed. The device contains a fretboard. The device further includes a plurality of frets and fret elements, the frets being laid across the fingerboard. The device further includes a plurality of ridges, the ridges supporting the strings in the stretched configuration and facilitating use of the instrument. The device also includes a plurality of strings and their attachments, called pegs or buttons, which strings are placed taut across the fingerboard and bridges. The device also includes a body that supports the fingerboard, bridges, knobs, and other elements of the instrument.

An object of the present disclosure is to enable the reproduction of microtones with a high degree of accuracy and the playing of innovative chords.

Another object of the present disclosure is to design the fretboard such that the spacing between frets obeys a logarithmic relationship for 22 equally tempered shrutis.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a quick and inexpensive solution to the shruti guitar that can be used both as an accompaniment and for a solo performance.

In order to further clarify the advantages and features of the present disclosure, the invention will be described in more detail with reference to specific embodiments thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It should be understood that these drawings represent only typical embodiments of the invention and are therefore not to be considered as limiting its scope. The invention will be described and illustrated with additional specificity and detail with the accompanying drawings.

Embodiments of the present disclosure are described below in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Referring to Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a shruti guitar musical device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The device 100 includes a fretboard 102 coupled to a body.

In one embodiment, a plurality of frets 104 and fret elements, the frets 104 being laid across the fretboard 102 .

In one embodiment, there are multiple ridges 106, where the ridges 106 are the Sai ten 108 in the extended form and facilitate use of the instrument.

In one embodiment, a plurality of strings 108 and their attachments are referred to as pegs 112 or buttons 114, with the strings 108 being taut across the fingerboard 102 and bridge.

In one embodiment, a body 110 supports the fretboard 102, bridges 106, knobs 114, and other elements of the instrument.

In another embodiment, the multiple frets 104 are laid across the fretboard 102 in a logarithmic configuration that is characteristic of the musical device compared to all other stringed instruments, with the number of frets 104 on the fretboard 102 being preferred.

In another embodiment, the logarithmic configuration facilitates the evenly tempered 22 shrutis (microtones) in an octave or saptaka as posited in "Bharat Munis Natyashashtra" and may be color coded.

In another embodiment, preferably 6 strings 108 are configured to run across the fretboard 102 .

In another embodiment, the gauge of the strings 108 is optionally varied.

In another embodiment, fingerboard 102 has a total of 35 frets 104, with each fret representing a shruti or microtone.

2 12 illustrates a top view of a shruti guitar musical device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The shruti guitar has 22 frets 104 in each octave/ saptaka dedicated to each shruti. The fretboard 102 has a total of 35 frets 104. Each fret of a shruti guitar represents a shruti or microtone. For example, three types of microtones of gandhara and nishada swara can be clearly demonstrated on the shruti guitar. Similarly, subtle nuances of shrutis or microtones of all other swaras can be demonstrated in a distinct manner on the shruti guitar due to a well-designed fret structure. The 22 shrutis (microtones) of Bharata Muni can certainly be played and demonstrated on this instrument. Shruti Guitar can be used both as an accompaniment and for a solo performance.

The 22 fret per octave/saptaka equal temperament structure offers the opportunity to play new chords.

The distinctive feature of the shruti guitar is its fretboard 102, which has 22 frets 104 equally tempered in each octave/saptaka. This feature makes the shruti guitar an entirely new and distinct instrument, although in terms of shape it shares some similarities with the popular instrument called the acoustic guitar.

The design of such a musical instrument is very interesting for several reasons. There is a very close relationship between music, mathematics and physics. When designing a shruti guitar one must decide on the fretboard 102 structure. Also, when attaching the frets 104, one must decide the spacing between the frets 104 by calculating frequency ratios of shrutis. The frets 104 are musically equally spaced in each octave. This fret structure is designed for an equal tempered 22 Shruti scale. This is the unique and novel feature of the Shruti guitar.

The novelty lies in the structure or configuration of the fretboard 102 as illustrated in the drawings and pictures of the Shruti guitar instrument. The fretboard 102 is constructed such that the spacing between frets 104 obeys a logarithmic relationship for 22 equally tempered shrutis. This enables the reproduction of microtones with high accuracy, as well as the playing of innovative chords.

The drawings and the above description provide exemplary embodiments. Those skilled in the art will recognize that one or more of the elements described may well be combined into a single functional element. Alternatively, certain elements can be broken down into multiple functional elements. Elements from one embodiment may be added to another embodiment.
