Description
Invasive medical procedures require that a surgical instrument be inserted into the body of a patient to perform a surgical procedure or to diagnose a cause of a medical condition. This introduction of surgical instruments into the body of the patient may be part of a medical intervention procedure. A medical intervention procedure must be performed under a guidance to avoid damage to the body of the patient. For example, the precise determination of the travel of a needle in the body of a patient is of utmost importance. This guide may include the use of a medical imaging device to accurately determine the travel of the needle. An error in determining the exact travel of the surgical instrument can damage the tissue and / or organs of the patient.
In a needle-based interventional procedure, the needle may need to be positioned at a precise angle to the patient's body to ensure that the needle gets in the right path in the patient's body. In the current state of the art, the determination and insertion of the needle at an appropriate angle depends on the physician's experience. This may result in the needle being inserted several times into the body of the patient, which may result in damage to the patient's body. In addition, the time required to perform the medical procedure increases dramatically. This may also result in exposure of the patient to a higher radiation exposure by the medical imaging device during the guidance process.
Against this background, it is necessary to provide a system for medical intervention procedures that prevents surgical instruments from being repeatedly inserted into the patient's body. There is also a need to provide a medical intervention system that reduces damage to the patient's body.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a position guidance system that accurately determines the positioning of a surgical instrument with respect to the patient's body.
This object is achieved by a position guiding system according to claim 1.
In the following, the solution according to the invention will be described both in relation to the claimed system and in relation to a method. Features, advantages or alternative embodiments herein may be assigned to other claimed objects and vice versa. In other words, the demands on the system can be improved by features that are described in the context of the method. In this case, the functional features of the process are embodied by objective units of the system.
The invention achieves the object by a position guidance system for a surgical instrument comprising a display unit which can be connected to a hub unit / hub unit of the surgical instrument. The surgical instrument may, for example, be a needle for a medical intervention procedure. The surgical instrument may include a first end configured to be inserted percutaneously into the body of a patient. The surgical instrument may further include a second end configured to be positioned outside the body of the patient. The stroke unit of the surgical instrument may be associated with the second end of the surgical instrument. The display unit may be connected to the hub unit so that the display unit may be attachable or detachable to the hub unit. In one embodiment, the display unit includes a first indicator. The first indicator can display one or more angle measurements. Such angle measurements may represent the angular position of the surgical instrument relative to the body of the patient. In one embodiment, the display unit further comprises a marker fluid. This marker fluid may be capable of aligning with the first indicator based on the positioning of the surgical instrument on the patient's body. For example, when the surgical instrument is positioned at an angle to the patient's body, the marker fluid in the display unit aligns with the first indicator to indicate the angular measurement of the surgical instrument relative to the patient's body. The marker fluid may be any liquid which may have a greater cohesive force between the molecules of the liquid compared to an adhesive force between the molecules of the liquid and the surface of the display unit in contact with that liquid. Advantageously, the first indicator may serve as a reference point for a physician during the medical procedure procedure. This reduces the error in inserting the surgical instrument into the body of the patient.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the hub unit of the surgical instrument is configured to remain outside the patient's body.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the display unit is a hollow unit. The Display unit may be, for example, a hollow unit with a closed inner surface and an outer surface. In one embodiment, the display unit comprises two hollow structures. The first hollow structure is formed from the inner surface of the display unit, and the second hollow structure is formed from the outer surface of the display unit. The marker fluid can be brought into contact with the inner surface of the display unit. The outer surface of the display unit may also form a hollow structure so that the display unit may be brought into contact with the hub unit through the outer surface of the display unit. It is advantageous that the hollow display unit allows the introduction of the marker fluid in the display unit. In addition, the hollow structure formed by the outer structure of the display unit allows efficient assignment of the display unit to the hub unit of the surgical instrument.
According to yet another embodiment of the invention, the display unit comprises a second indicator. This second indicator may be used to align the surgical instrument with the medical imaging device. The medical intervention procedure can be carried out under the guidance of a medical imaging unit, so that an accurate determination of the travel path of the surgical instrument in the body of the patient is ensured. Therefore, alignment of the surgical instrument to the medical imaging instrument is required. Advantageously, the second indicator on the display unit enables such alignment of the surgical instrument with the medical imaging unit.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the first indicator comprises angle measurements in the range of 0 ° to 90 °. It is advantageous that the display unit allows the measurement of the angular positions of the surgical instrument with respect to the patient's body.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the marker fluid in the display unit is chromatic. A colored marker fluid enables efficient identification of the angle measurement of the surgical instrument with respect to the patient's body.
According to another embodiment of the invention, a volume of marker fluid in the display unit may range from 40% to 50% of the total volume of the display unit. It is advantageous that an inclination of the marker fluid against the inner surface of the display unit can be accurately detected.
According to yet another embodiment of the invention, the display unit may be configured to connect to and disconnect from the hub unit of the surgical instrument. The display unit can be released from the hub unit of the surgical instrument and re-attached to the hub unit. The hollow structure formed by the outer surface of the display unit allows for efficient attachment and detachment of the display unit from the hub unit.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the display unit may be associated with the hub unit of the surgical instrument via a connector. For example, the display unit and the hub unit can be connected to each other via a Luer-lock connection. It is advantageous that the display unit and the hub unit can be efficiently connected to one another without the connection being disconnected.
According to yet another embodiment of the invention, the display unit is transparent. It is advantageous that the transparent display unit enables efficient identification of the orientation of the marker fluid relative to the first indicator.
The invention also achieves the object by a method for using a position guidance system for an invasive medical procedure. The method includes establishing a connection between a display unit and a hub unit of a surgical instrument. This marker fluid may be capable of aligning with the first indicator based on the positioning of the hub of the surgical instrument on the patient's body. For example, if the surgical instrument is positioned at an angle to the patient's body, the marker fluid will orient in the Display unit with the first indicator to indicate the angle measurement of the surgical instrument with respect to the body of the patient. The marker fluid may be any liquid which may have a greater cohesive force between the molecules of the liquid compared to an adhesive force between the molecules of the liquid and the surface of the display unit in contact with that liquid. The method further comprises adjusting a position of the hub unit of the surgical instrument attached to the display unit to a certain angle such that the marker fluid in the display unit aligns with a first indicator at a particular angle. Advantageously, the first indicator may serve as a reference point for a physician during the medical procedure procedure. Therefore, the error in inserting the surgical instrument into the body of the patient can be reduced.
