Schweißbacken (Spannsystem) für WIG-Orbitalschweißköpfe zur Fixierung und Zentrierung von zwei Rohrenden (Fügepartnern), die aus vier Teilen gefertigt sind (ein Satz = vier Teile) und in den passenden Schweißkopf (Systembindung) mittels einer Schraubverbindung und/oder Klemmverbindung befestigt werden, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Backenhälften Ausformungen (1) zur Schweißkopfmitte hin entlang eines oder mehrerer fester Radien aufweist. Das Wolfram-Inertgas-Orbital-Schweißverfahren gehört zu den etablierten Fügeverfahren zum Verbinden rotationssymmetrischer Fügepartner (z. B. Rohrenden). Eine Unterart bildet das WIG-Orbitalschweißen mit geschlossenen Köpfen ohne Zusatzmaterial. Die Rohrenden werden hierbei, mit im Schweißkopf montierten Spannbacken, in vorher definierter Position gespannt. Üblicherweise kommen zwei Backenhälften pro Rohrende zum Einsatz. Die Spannbacken bilden dabei eine Funktionseinheit aus Positionier-/Spannvorrichtung, optischen Schutzschirm, Schutzschirm gegen umgebende Atmosphäre (Inertgas in der Lichtbogenkammer zwischen den Spannbacken) und elektrischem Leiter (geschlossener Stromkreislauf für elektrische Schweißverfahren notwendig). Diese Funktionseinheit wird im Zusammenhang mit oben genannten Fügeverfahren Schweißbacke genannt. Konstruktionsbedingt führt die Kapselung zu einem Wärmestau innerhalb der Lichtbogenkammer. Zudem muss für eine platzeffiziente Bauweiße das Spannen der Rohrenden möglichst dicht an der Fügezone erfolgen. Hieraus resultiert eine weitere thermische Belastung des Schweißkopfes.
