Der Kunststoff, der sich für solche Anwendungen bestens eignet, weil er schon selbst einen sehr geringen Reibungskoeffizienten in Verbindung mit anderen Materialien aufweist, ist Polytetrafluorethylen. Grundsätzlich besteht das Gleitlager dabei aus einem Compound, mit einem Polymer dem Verstärkerstoffe in Form von Fasern und Füllstoffen beigemengt ist. Ferner beinhaltet dieses Compound innerhalb des Polymers eingebettete Festschmierstoffe oder dergleichen. Die Schiebeführung ist dabei aus einem Profil gefertigt, das beispielsweise aus Aluminium mit einer hartanodisierten Oberfläche besteht. Während der Schiebebewegung werden die Schmierstoffe quasi durch einen Mikroverschleiß ständig an die Oberfläche der Schiebeführung befördert und senken so automatisch die Reibung zwischen der Schiebeführung und einem Gleitschuh.
