Das Niveaurad wird mit einer Radstütze (5) an das zu versorgende Fahrzeug befestigt, wobei durch Knickung der Radstütze mittels Schwenkgelenk und Antrieb (6) die beiden Radscheiben mit der zwischen diesen angeordneten Induktionsspule (10) in Richtung Fahrbahn (3) bewegt werden. Somit werden die Radscheiben gegen die Fahrbahn gedrückt, gleichzeitig werden die Federelemente (8) gespannt. Die Induktionsspule (10) wird durch einen Positionierantrieb (9) mit Hilfe von 2 Führungselementen (11) positioniert, damit ist diese immer waagerecht, also parallel zur Fahrbahn ausgerichtet, so das der Abstand zur Fahrbahn (3) bzw. den darin eingelassenen Fahrbahninduktor stets minimal ist. Dies ist auch der Fall wenn sich die Radscheiben drehen, also sich das Fahrzeug bewegt. Zur Steuerung von Rad und Spulen ist ein Positioniersensor (12) und ein Fahrbahnsensor (14) vorhanden. Wenn das Fahrzeug normalerweise auf der Fahrbahn gefahren wird und keine induktive Energieübertragung erfolgen soll, sind die Radscheiben nach oben abgeknickt.
