Description

The area of energy production will be pumped storage power plants for storage used by electrical energy.

These power plants consist of an upper ( 1 ) and a lower ( 6 ) Pool. The water flows from the upper basin through the turbines ( 5 ) into the lower basin. This electricity is produced. During off-peak hours, pumping ( 5 ) pumped the water back into the upper tank, so that it is available again for electricity production.

Stand der TechnikState of the art

So far the upper, and especially the lower, basins were above ground, for example through dams, Dam walls, natural Lakes or dammed rivers educated. So you were at the power plant to the natural, tied to topographic conditions. Especially in regions without pronounced altitudes Pumped storage power plants could only with low fall heights and thus tend to greater losses will be realized.

Innovationinnovation

Pumped storage power plants are now to be constructed so that, although the upper basin ( 1 ) above ground, the lower basin ( 6 ) but is located deep in the mountain. The water is through the downpipe ( 2 ) underground turbines ( 5 ) and then collected in underground cavities (caves, caverns) below the machine chamber ( 6 ). From there, it is then pumped back up to low-load periods, as in conventional pumped-storage power plants.

Vorteile:Advantages:

The underground lower basin offers the following advantages:
  • - The drop height can be optimally created, for example, more than 500 meters, which otherwise would not be possible in the flat and hilly country. This high performance with a small water reservoir and downpipe diameter are possible.
  • - the downpipe ( 2 ) can be installed vertically; so losses are avoided
  • - Due to the small diameter of the downpipe, an existing pit may possibly be used
  • - Above ground only a small basin ( 1 ) needed
  • - The pumped-up water can have temperatures of over 35 degrees in "hot pits." Thus, for example, greenhouses in the immediate vicinity of the above-ground basin can be supplied with heating energy
  • - existing pits ( 3 ) can be meaningfully re-used during and after completion of the extraction of raw materials
  • - existing pits are mostly in densely populated areas with high electricity demand. The transport losses from the mountain regions are eliminated.
  • - Pumped storage plants were previously the domain of the Alpine countries. With this technology, the German energy industry can be strengthened.
