Bisher werden Sport- und Spielreifen (sog. Hula-Hoop-Reifen) aus Holz oder aus Plaste hergestellt. Aus der Verwendung dieser Materialien resultieren jedoch eine ganze Reihe negativer Eigenschaften. Reifen aus Holz herzustellen ist schwierig und aufwendig. Weiterhin ist Holz feuchtigkeitsanfällig, was leicht zu Formveränderungen führen kann. Des weiteren wird der Reifen schon bei relativ geringen mechanischen Einwirkungen zerstört. Zwar läßt sich Plaste leichter verarbeiten, jedoch ist die spätere Formstabilität sowie die mechanische und thermische Festigkeit ebenfalls nur gering. Des weiteren stellt die Fertigung große Ansprüche an die Nachbearbeitung zur Beseitigung der Spritzgrate.
