Abstract

The airbag opening and unfolding mechanism has several cover flaps. These open at different times after the release of the airbag. This is achieved by differences in the rigidity (firmness) of the tearing seams and tearing edges (5) causing them to open at different times under the pressure of the outflowing gas. The cover flaps should preferably be between the spokes (9) of the steering wheel. The idea can also be adapted for passenger and side airbags.

Ziel der ErfindungAim of the invention

The aim of the invention is to inflate the airbag so that directly in front of the airbag body parts of the occupant through a diffuse and decentralized Inflation behavior of the airbag protected against excessive energy input and thus the Protective effect of known systems is exceeded.

Wesen der ErfindungEssence of the invention

Based on the aim of the invention, the task is to inflate the airbag thanks to the cover flap above and an opening flap-oriented fold control of the airbag fabric and thus the so-called out-of-position problem (OoP) to defuse and prevent arm injuries from the airbag shooting out like this airbag systems common today can protect.

Beschreibung der ErfindungDescription of the invention

The folding and flap opening mechanism of today's airbags cause the airbag fabric to emerge from the airbag module ( 1 ) towards the occupant.

Shortly after the gas generator is ignited, the so-called "punch-out" effect occurs, in which the airbag fabric ( 6 ) hits the occupant at high speed. If the occupant is in an out-of-position (OoP) situation - i.e. outside of the normal position tested in the laboratory - high and supercritical loads on the head / neck and thorax can occur. In addition, depending on the position of the arms, fractures of the forearms can occur in the event of an accident.

The folding dealt with here in connection with the novel flap opening mechanism causes the tightly packed airbag fabric package not to hit the occupant through a central flap opening in an OoP situation of the occupant. Due to the different stiffness of the flap tear-open edges (see Fig. 1), the weakly dimensioned tear-open edges ( 4 ) - preferably positioned on the circumference of the airbag cover - are opened when the airbag is deployed, so that the airbag fabric ( 6 ) is decentralized through the opening flaps ( 3 ) the airbag module ( 1 ) can escape (see Fig. 2). The blow-off openings ( 7 ) of the diffuser ( 8 ) designed as an energy-absorbing deformation element ensure that the airbag fabric ( 6 ) deploys in the plane of the steering wheel rim ( 10 ) or in front of the steering wheel rim (in the direction of travel). Blow-off openings ( 7 ) of different sizes in the energy-absorbing diffuser further support this effect. The steering wheel spokes ( 9 ) can be designed so that they serve as deployment guides for the airbag fabric.

After the flap (s) ( 3 ) are opened, the more large tear-open edge (s) ( 5 ) also open as the internal pressure of the module continues to increase, thus ensuring that the flap (s) ( 2 ) is fully opened. The already spread airbag fabric ( 6 ) can inflate completely after opening the flap (s) ( 2 ) and the airbag takes on its final shape (see Fig. 3).

The airbag deployment process can be graded depending on the number and the The size of the opening flaps vary. The tiered tear force level for the Opening flaps ensure a sequential deployment and inflation of the airbag. In spite of the gradation in time is the complete deployment of the airbag for the "in position" - Situation (airbag design position) of the occupant guaranteed.

Due to the time-delayed opening of the flaps ( 2 , 3 ) - controlled by the internal pressure of the module - the kinetic energy of the airbag fabric ( 6 ) is directionally distributed by the number, size and direction of the blow-off openings (geometry of the diffuser), causing the mass of the airbag fabric to decrease the opening of the flaps ( 4 ) is already distributed, so that the impulse transmission of the airbag fabric to the occupants in the OoP takes place over a wide area.

The airbag deployment and flap opening mechanism described above can also be applied to a passenger airbag module (see Fig. 4) and a side airbag module (see Fig. 5).

For the front passenger airbag, the decentralized airbag deployment behavior ensures significant reduction in energy input in the occupants z. B. in reverse Child restraint systems or in special OoP situations.

With the side airbag, the stepped force level of the flap tear edges allows or by the delayed opening of the flaps the operating times for the head and the Thoracic part z. B. in combined head-thorax airbags.
