Einrichtung zur Steuerung einer Tonbandmaschine, insbesondere in Studioanlagen Tonbandmaschinen, wie sie in Studios für Sender oder für wissenschaftliche Zwecke gebräuchlich sind, werden im allgemeinen von Hand bedient. In Senderegieanlagen ist aber auch schon ein automatischer Programmablauf bekannt. Bei solchen Anlagen beschränkt sich die Bedienung der Tonbandmaschinen auf das Einlegen und Herausnehmen des Tonbandes. Für den automatischen Programmablauf passiert das Tonband auf der Tonbandmaschine zunächst eine Lichtschranke, bevor es die Wiedergabeeinrichtung erreicht. Die Lichtschranke reagiert auf die unterschiedliche Lichtdurchlässigkeit von Magnetband und dem vor und hinter dem Magnetband angeklebten, nicht magnetisierbaren Band. Das licht-Surchlässige Band am Anfang und Ende wird als Vorspannband bezeichnet.
