Dabei ist es mit einem gewissen Geschick und Zeitaufwand erforderlich, das Schriftstück, nach dem es ungefähr bis zur Hälfte aufgeschlagen wurde, mit der entsprechenden Anzahl von Seiten durch den Schlitz zu fädeln. Damit sind die Voraussetzungen für die Ablage in einem Ordner oder die Einordnung in eine Hängeregistratur geschaffen. Soweit der Heftstreifen im Zusammenhang mit einer Hängeregistratur benutzt werden soll, wird durch die Schlitze ein sogenannter "Hängeregistraturstreifen" gesteckt. Nun ist es wieder eine Frage des Geschickes der oder des Büroangestellten, den Hängeregistraturstreifen durch die Schlitze des Heftstreifens zu fädeln. Obwohl Heftstreifen Massenartikel darstellen, werden sie im täglichen Büroablauf oft mehrfach verwendet.
