Verfahren zum kontinuierlichen Auftragen einer Schicht auf ein laufendes BandProcess for the continuous application of a layer on a moving belt
The invention relates to a method for continuous Applying a layer of essentially liquid material to a moving belt, the one facing the layer Surface has discontinuities, in particular transverse to the movement direction extending seams.
Methods of the above type become more numerous in manufacture Products such as adhesive tapes, magnetic tapes, photographic films, photographic copy papers etc., applied. To increase the efficiency and .somit to reduce the cost of manufacturing them Products, the application of the layer is essentially continuous carried out. Since the used tape or the carrier * . layer is only available in a certain length for the layer to be applied, a new one must be added in periodic order Supply roll of tape can be connected to the end of the unwound supply roll so that the layer can be applied without Interruption can be continued.
It turns out that it's best if you can to connect the facing ends of the two bands

Gewöhnlich wird die zusammengesetzte Stelle des kontinuierlichenone extending transversely to the direction of movement of the baid Adhesive tape provides. In addition, it was found that... .. application of the adhesive tape to the layer to be applied facing. Fewer errors occur on the surface than when the adhesive tape is applied to the one facing away from the layer Area of the belt. Although the application of the adhesive tape on the coated side of the tape leads to fewer coating difficulties than with other connection methods, there are still difficulties and other imperfections in the Layer following the tape has been observed. Usually becomes the compound digit of the continuous
Ribbon cut out of the finished product and thrown away, so that those occurring at the seam of the ribbon Coating defects cannot be found in the end product. It has been found, however, that under special circumstances the seam over a considerable length of the coated Tape that follows the seam can exert an influence. With many products it is possible to that you can cut out the affected part of the tape without affecting the usefulness of the adjacent parts of the Band would be substantially affected. With many products However, such a procedure is impossible, which is why all parts of the tape that have such defects must be thrown away or eliminated.
As the speed of the belt increases and the width of the belt increases, so does the value of the parts that had to be thrown away because of the defects caused by the seam after the seam of the belt. This is true to an even greater "measures of quality products in which an expensive coating material is used, the recovery prepared from the excluded% different sections of the tape difficulties. For this reason, it has become increasingly important, the defects caused by the discontinuity within of the coated tape, if not completely: '

auszuschliessen.. ·ruled out .. The elimination of these imperfections must, however can be achieved without a significant increase in product costs. In addition, the elimination of the discontinuities caused imperfections in no case to other, possibly less desirable defects in the coated product. In addition, the method for "eliminating those caused by the discontinuities Defects in a simple manner and without impairing the HOduköoiszahTei.a, which occurs in high-speed coating machines are possible, be achievable. ·
Many of the imperfections in coated tapes appear from the inclusion of air in the tape applied to the tape Layer, or from the adhesion of a small air bubble to the coating nozzle, with the air bubble further Affects parts of the layer applied to the tape. It has been found that the trapped .. air and the air bubbles are absorbed or generated when the coating material hits the surface via the adhesive tape of the ribbon flows down. The trapped air obviously comes from the air in the wedge-shaped Transition area included between the end face of the adhesive tape and the surface of the tape facing the layer is.
The invention is based on the object of a method for continuous application of a layer of essentially liquid material to a moving belt, with the imperfections / in the layer of the tape caused by the inclusion of air following the discontinuities caused xverden, are largely reduced.
Diese Aufgabe ist bei einem Verfahren der eingangs genannten Art erfindungsgemäß dadurch gelöst, daß zur Vermeidung von Fehlstellen in der erstarrten Schicht im Anschluss an die Unstetigkeitsstellen zumindest auf die der Schicht zugekehrte Fläche des Bandes ein den Einschluss von an den Unstetigkeitsstellen haftender Luft in der Schicht verhindernderIn a method of the type mentioned at the outset, this object is achieved according to the invention in that, in order to avoid Defects in the solidified layer following the discontinuities at least on those facing the layer Surface of the tape prevents the inclusion of air adhering to the discontinuities in the layer

Coating is applied. By applying ^ the; according to the invention Coating is prevented that the air adhering to the discontinuities is distributed in the layer of the tape and becomes trapped or reaches the surface of this layer as bubbles and thus still flaws in a wide distance. from the point of discontinuity.
In a preferred embodiment of the process it is provided that the coating is applied before the application of the essentially liquid material and that the coating is based on a substance which is not used immediately after application by the essentially liquid material . As a result, the air adhering to the points of discontinuity can be localized in a particularly simple manner and in the immediate vicinity of the respective point of discontinuity by forming an air chamber.
Hierdurch wird in besonders einfacher V/eise ein einwandfreies Anlegen des Beschichtungsmaterials an die Ünstetigkeitsstellen bildende Klebebänder ermöglicht, ohne daß dabei Luft in der Schicht mit eingeschlossen würde.at a point of discontinuity caused by an adhesive tape in connection with the adhesive tape, a transition area formed by the coating with decreasing thickness is created. Preferably This is an adhesive tape with a wedge-shaped Transition forming face used. When using conventional adhesive tapes, it is provided that the " Transition area is filled with an oily-hydrophobic material. This is a particularly simple process Perfect application of the coating material to the discontinuities forming adhesive tapes made possible without air being trapped in the layer.
Hierdurch wird erreicht, daß nach dem Erstarren einer durchsichtigen Schicht, die auf das Band aufgetragen ist, die Unstetigkeitsstelle,Another form of procedure provides that in addition to the directly adjoining the adhesive tape surface of the tape, the rear face of the adhesive tape with an im essential hydrophobic material is coated. A marking liquid can be used as a "hydrophobic material go out, which is preferably applied by a pen provided with a felt tip. This achieves that after the solidification of a transparent layer which is applied to the tape, the point of discontinuity,

Die Fig. zeigen:The invention is illustrated by various means in the following description Process forms according to the invention explained in detail. The figures show:
Fig. 1 einen stark vergrössert dargestellten Schnitt durch eine Nahtstelle eines beschichteten Bandes, bei dem im Anschluss anwiese Unstetigkeitssttelle ein Übergangsbereich mit abnehmender Dicke geschaffen ist;Fig. 1 shows a greatly enlarged section through a seam of a coated tape, in the point of discontinuity instructed afterwards Transition area with decreasing thickness is created;
Fig.2 einen der Fig. 1 ähnlichen Schnitt, bei dem ein Klebeband mit einer einen keilförmigen übergang bildenden Stirnfläche verwendet wird.2 shows a section similar to FIG. 1, in which a Adhesive tape is used with an end face forming a wedge-shaped transition.
In einem Übergangsbereicn/,der zwischen der hinteren Stirnfläche des Klebebandes I^ keilförmig ausgebildet ist, ist ein Luftkeil 20 eingeschlossen, wodurch die Schicht bein Auftragen, insbesondere bei hohen Beschichtungsgeschwindigkeiten, nicht unmittelbar der Oberfläche des Bandes an dieserIn Fig. 1 is a section through a seam of a tape in which the end of a tape 10 is connected to the beginning of a subsequent tape 12 by a piece of adhesive tape 1Λ that bridges the seam. Here, the belt moves in the direction of arrow 16 under a loading device, not shown. The coating or layer 13 made of an essentially liquid material is applied to the side of the tape facing the adhesive tape Ik. The front and rear end faces of the adhesive tape form a point of discontinuity for the surface of the tape. It has been found that the layer of essentially liquid material generally adapts to the stepped profile of the end face of the adhesive tape when the seam of the tape moves under the loading device. In a transition area which is wedge-shaped between the rear face of the adhesive tape, an air wedge 20 is enclosed, whereby the layer when applied, especially at high coating speeds, is not directly on the surface of the tape

Stelle folgt. Position follows. It has been found that the air wedge 20 trapped between the coating material, the tape facing faces of the tape and the rear face of the adhesive tape penetrates the liquid coating material as the coating material settles on the surface of the tape. The trapped air can be distributed over the parts of the belt that follow the discontinuity point, so that the defects caused thereby can lead to the end product tearing back. Far more dangerous, however, is that a part can of trapped air wedge 20 result in small air bubbles at the surface w of the coating nozzle and adhere to influence the effluent through this nozzle coating material. It can be the case that these air bubbles only burst after a long period of time, so that until then the entire layer following the point of discontinuity is influenced. As a result, the number of faulty countries can be considerably greater than one would assume based on the air inclusion in the layer alone.
Here, the rear face of the adhesive tape IV forms a wedge-shaped transition, so that no point of discontinuity between the rear face of the adhesive tape and the adjacent surface of the tape. In order to it is achieved that no air can adhere to the rear end face of the adhesive tape and penetrate into the layer or could stick to the coating nozzle.
Gumrnikitt , vermieden. Dieser Gummikitt , erfülltIn a modified form of the method, the inclusion of air adhering to the point of discontinuity in the layer by filling in the transition area between the rear face of the adhesive tape and the adjacent one Surface of the belt is formed with a filler material, such as rubber putty, avoided. This rubber putty, fulfilled
909822/1134909822/1134
im wesentlichen die-selbe Aufgabe x\Tie der keilförmige Übergang des Klebebandes, d.h., bei beiden Verfahrensformen soll durch Ausfüllen des Übergangsbereichs zwischen dem Klebeband und der Oberfläche des Bandes die Ausbildung eines Luftkeils an der hinteren Stirnfläche des Klebebandes vermieden werden.essentially the same task x \ T ie the wedge-shaped transition of the adhesive tape, that is, in both types of process, the formation of an air wedge on the rear face of the adhesive tape is to be avoided by filling the transition area between the adhesive tape and the surface of the tape.
What is particularly surprising, however, is the discovery that by Air inclusion essentially caused defects in the layer by applying a coating over the rear face of the adhesive tape and the surface adjacent thereto the tape can be avoided with a material that is not wetted by the applied liquid layer and that allowing the volatile solvents to evaporate prior to applying the layer to the tape. In the case of the adhesion of a coating water-based jsmaterials has been found to Outstanding results can be achieved if the rear face of the adhesive tape and the adjoining upper r surface of the tape with the felt tip of a pen, the marking fluid contains, edited. This contains marking fluid a solvent consisting essentially of aromatic Hydrocarbons, predominantly dimethylbenzenes and kerosene with a high flash point. Obviously, such treatment prevents the transition area with a coating the immediate wetting of the rear face the adhesive tape and * the surface attached to it of the tape through the coating material so that it actually bridges the air wedge without entrapment to allow this air into the coating material and without that air bubbles arise which could stick to the coating nozzle, which may be the case when the coating material immediately connects to the surface of the tape. In particular, it has been found that extremely satisfactory results can be obtained when using the coating that is in the Transition area prevents air from penetrating the layer with a commercially available pen, such as a felt-tip pen, applies.

In addition, it was found that an oily-hydrophobic material, e.g. a solution of oil in methyl ethyl ketone also gives very satisfactory results.
Another material that also gives satisfactory results is a kerosene fraction A high flash point containing a non-volatile fraction of an oily material that also causes wetting of the tape and the surface of the adhesive tape prevented by the coating material.

While one can achieve satisfactory results by applying the coating to the surface of the tape / indirectly following the rear face of the adhesive tape, for example by applying the coating to the tape before the adhesive tape is applied, far better results are achieved by that both the rear end face of the tape and the surface of the tape adjoining it are provided with the coating. At the same time it was almost established that the sole application of the coating to the rear face of the adhesive tape cannot prevent defects in the subsequent coating.
