Description
The invention relates to a method for producing magnetic recording media (magnetogram carriers) by applying a layer of a dispersion of finely divided magnetic pigment in a Solution of a binder combination and optionally customary additives on the carrier or the Substrate, subsequent drying and hardening and, if necessary, surface finishing of the applied magnetizable coating layer.
Es ist bekannt, magnetische Aufzeichnungsträger durch Beschichten von Trägern, wie Folien, BändernIt is known to use magnetic recording media by coating substrates such as foils and tapes
So ist die Verwendung von Copolymerisaten aus überwiegenden Mengen Vinylchlorid oder Vinylidenchlorid mit Comonomeren, wie Vinylacetat, bekannt.ίο or plates made of plastic or non-magnetizable Metals, with a dispersion of a magnetizable, material that has certain minimum magnetic values must have to produce in a binder and organic solvent. Especially for manufacturing of magnetic disks used for data storage are becoming high demands placed on the generally very thin coating film. The coating formed should be very good Have adhesive strength on the substrate, against solvents, temperature, moisture and in particular be very resistant to abrasion. The coating in which the magnetizable material is in a binder is embedded, on the one hand it should be very hard, but on the other hand it should not be brittle. That for the manufacture The binding agent related to the layer thus determines the mechanical and chemical properties to a large extent Properties of the overall film. The use of modern magnetic tapes is high and the magnetic tape is subject to wear and tear a complicated process. The magnetogram carriers are exposed to heat and abrasion exposed, and the damage to the tape by the erosion of the layer containing magnetic particles can be caused by the abraded sticking and sticking to the recording and reproducing heads Particles as well as the back transfer of abraded material through the recording head to the Magnetogram carrier take place. Thus, the type of material abraded is also important. When Various polymers and binders for the dispersion of the finely divided magnetic pigment are already used Mixtures of different polymers have been recommended. Such is the use of copolymers known from predominant amounts of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride with comonomers such as vinyl acetate.
There are also polyamides, combinations of butylated melamine formaldehyde resin with polyvinyl butyral resin and a combination of epoxy resins with phenol-formaldehyde condensates as binders in the Manufacture of magnetogram carriers used. Also the use of a mixture of polyisocyanates and higher molecular weight hydroxy compounds are known. However, the known binders are satisfactory not in all points. They sometimes make difficulties in processing by z. B. theirs Change viscosity or the uniform magnetic pigment concentration, or leave them after the Oven drying and post-treatment wishes regarding their magnetic values or their chemical resistance open minded.
It has now been found that magnetogram carriers can be obtained by applying a layer of a dispersion of finely divided magnetic pigment in a solution of a binder combination containing curable polyepoxide compounds and optionally customary additives on the carrier material, subsequent drying and finally hardening and, if necessary, surface finishing of the applied layer is advantageous while avoiding the well-known difficulty

Zu den Komponenten der im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren verwendeten Bindemittelmischung ist folgendes zu sagen:The following applies to the components of the binder mixture used in the process according to the invention accept:
The curable copolymer A used should largely be in the solvents commonly used be soluble and prepared from the monomers mentioned or the structural units polymerized into them these monomers contained in the specified amount in the copolymer.
Of the alkenylbenzene hydrocarbons having 8 to 10 carbon atoms, styrene is preferred used. However, it is also possible to use vinyl toluenes, vinyl xylenes or methyl styrene. The alkenylbenzene hydrocarbons are used in amounts from 40 to 80 and in particular from 60 up to 80% by weight polymerized into the copolymer. The use of larger amounts of styrene or Vinyl toluene gives the layers a high degree of hardness.
So vermittelt z. As suitable esters of acrylic and / or methacrylic acid with alkanols having 1 to 12 carbon atoms be the methacrylic acid methyl ester, the acrylic acid ethyl ester, the (meth) acrylic acid tert-butyl ester, the 2,2-dimethylpentyl ester and the 2-ethylhexyl ester of (Meth) acrylic acid and mixtures of these esters. The choice of the amount and type of ester or ester mixtures depends on the desired modification of the properties, in particular the Hardness and elasticity of the layer. So z. B. the use of the esters of acrylic acid with 5 to 12 Carbon atoms in the alkyl radical in smaller amounts, e.g. B. in amounts of 5 to 25 wt .-%, if used Larger amounts of styrene give the resulting layers good elasticity.
As examples of ethers of N-methylolamides the Acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid with an alcohol and in particular an alcohol with 1 to 8 Carbon atoms, which in amounts of 5 to 40 and in particular 10 to 30 wt .-% in CopoJymerisat A The ethers of N-methylolacrylamide are polymerized in or contain sinu as their structural units and N-methylol methacrylamide with N-butanol, Isobutanol, 2-ethylhexyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol or Called ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The n-butyl ethers of N-methylol (meth) acrylamide are preferred.
The copolymer should be olefinic in amounts of up to 15 and preferably in amounts of 1 to 10% by weight unsaturated carboxylic acids with 3 to 5 carbon atoms or in amounts up to 20 and in particular 2 to 15 % By weight of olefinically unsaturated monomers with an alcoholic hydroxyl group or both monomers Contained in copolymerized form in the stated amounts. As olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids with 3 to 5 Acrylic or methacrylic acid are particularly suitable for carbon atoms. Crotonic acid can also be used or use maleic acid. The carboxylic acids used cause the binder to become Can cure at relatively lower temperatures, they also contribute to the hardness of the binder as well as to their Adhesion strength to the substrates.
Monoesters in particular are olefinically unsaturated monomers with an alcoholic hydroxyl group of acrylic and / or methacrylic acid from a glycol, in particular half esters of (oxa) alkanediols with 2 to 6 carbon atoms, such as the mono (meth) acrylates of 1,4-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, ethylene glycol or Diethylene glycol. The use of olefinically unsaturated monomers with alcoholic hydroxyl groups facilitates the hardening of the binding agent and contributes to the solvent and temperature resistance the layers produced with the copolymer as a binder.
The copolymers used according to the invention as binder components can be prepared in a manner which is customary per se by polymerizing up to 30 and in particular up to 20% by weight of another Modify monoolefinically unsaturated monomers. This is mainly used for manufacturing of paint binders commercially available comonomers in question. Acrylic and methacrylamide are mentioned, Acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, N-vinylamides and N-vinyllactams, such as N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide or N-vinylcaprolactam.
Gut geeignete Copolymerisate bestehen z. Well-suited copolymers are z. B. from 60 to 80 wt .-% styrene, 15 to 32 wt .-% N-butoxymethyl-acrylamide or methacrylamide and 1 to 5% by weight of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. Are very suitable Copolymers of 40 to 60 wt .-% styrene, 20 to 32 wt .-% of an ester of (meth) acrylic acid and one Alcohol with 5 to 8 carbon atoms, 15 to 30% by weight of an ether of N-methylol (meth) acrylamide, 3 to 10% by weight of a monoester of (meth) acrylic acid and an alkanediol having 3 to 4 carbon atoms and 0.5 to 5% by weight (meth) acrylic acid. The copolymers used according to the invention as binder components can in the usual way, e.g. by solution, suspension or emulsion copolymerization, be made.
Sehr geeignete Polyepoxidverbindungen sind die handelsüblichen Polyglycidyläther von mehrwertigen AlkoholenAccording to the invention, the binder combination, in addition to the curable copolymers A 5 to 35 % By weight and in particular 8 to 20% by weight of a curable polyepoxide compound (B). very suitable polyepoxide compounds are the commercially available polyglycidyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols
und insbesondere mehrwertigen Phenolen, von denen jich der aus 2,2-Bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)propan und Epichiorhydrin hergestellte Polyglycidylether besonders bewährt hatand in particular polyhydric phenols, of which the jich of 2,2-bis (p-hydroxyphenyl) propane and Polyglycidyl ethers made especially from epichlorohydrin has proven itself
It is advantageous in the method according to the invention, in the case of the binder mixture used in addition to the curable copolymers ^ (A) and the polyepoxide compounds (B) up to 30% by weight, based on the amount of A and B, another soluble and compatible polymeric substance to be used. Polymeric substances are particularly suitable for this, which increase the adhesive strength or the pigment binding capacity the binder further increase. Polyvinyl methyl ether may be mentioned, in particular in amounts from 8 to 20 wt .-% of the amount of A and B, which can be prepared in a known manner (see. Houben-Weyl, Methods of Organic Chemistry, 4th Edition, Volume 14/1, page 921). Also mentioned are polyvinyl acetate, such as polyvinyl butyral, and etherified and soluble condensates of formaldehyde with melamine with alcohols or phenol, the latter preferably in amounts of up to 15% by weight of the amount of A and B.
According to the invention, the magnetic pigment used is a finely divided, cube-shaped or, preferably, a Acicular gamma iron (III) oxide, especially one with an average particle size of 0.1 to 2 μπι, used with a Gj bis Ci 8-Alkylarylsulfonsäure or a salt of these acids has been treated and contains residues of these organic substances. Particularly suitable as an alkylarylsulfonic acid is dodecyl-phenyl-sulfonic acid. The treatment or application of iron (III) oxide with alkylarylsulfonic acid or their salts can be obtained by mixing alkylarylsulfonic acid with the finely divided iron (M) oxide take place in aqueous dispersion and subsequent drying of the magnetic pigment. Very advantageous is to pass through in an aqueous slurry of ferric oxide with the alkylarylsulfonic acid Addition of a suitable salt, advantageously aluminum sulfate, a kind of precipitation of the organic substance bring about on the ferric oxide. Treated magnetic pigments containing 2 to 8% by weight of organic Containing substance are particularly suitable for the method according to the invention.
In general, 70 to 140 parts by weight of the treated gamma iron (III) oxide are used for the preparation of the dispersion of the magnetic pigment and especially 100 to 130 parts by weight of that to be used in the process of the invention Binder mixture, based on the solid content, used. To prepare the dispersion of the treated Magnetic pigment or magnetic powder, this is expediently combined with the one according to the invention Method to be used bir.dematerials mixture and enough solvent after one customary dispersing process, e.g. B. in the ball mill, dispersed. Suitable organic solvents are for the production of the dispersions aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene or xylene, Glycol ethers such as ethyl glycol, glycol ether esters such as ethyl glycol acetate, alcohols such as propanol or butanol, Ketones, such as acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, their mixtures and others customary for paint binders Solvents and mixed solvents. You can loosen the tie-in and with it Solution predisperse the magnetic pigment, but also binders, magnetic pigment and solvents directly Mix in the dispersing device. The remaining ingredients are either in this mixture added in solid state or in the form of 20 to 60% solutions. It has been found to be functional proved to continue the dispersion until an extremely fine distribution of the magnetic pigment reached, which may take 1 to 4 days. Subsequent repeated filtering gives a completely homogeneous magnetic dispersion.
Because of the high hardness and the particularly good adhesive strength of the according to the invention Process produced layers as well as the very good pigment binding capacity of the binder mixtures
Danach gießt man aus einem beweglichen Arm die Mischung auf die langsam rotierenden Trägerplatten. the inventive method for the production of magnetic disks using metallic, in particular aluminum, carrier plates have proven particularly successful. When applying the layers on metallic carrier plates or drums have the binder-magnetic pigment mixtures used according to the invention particularly proven in centrifugal casting. The magnetic dispersion is set in motion by means of a circulating apparatus held, with another filtration taking place at the same time. Then you pour from a movable arm the mixture on the slowly rotating carrier plates.
By increasing the number of revolutions to about 600 to 1000 per minute, the excess is the Magnetic dispersion is thrown off and thus a uniform layer of the dispersion is achieved on the plate. Analogue the back of the plate is then coated. It is easy to see that this is a convenient coating method special requirements for the properties of the magnetic dispersion and thus also for the related binder provides.
By heat treatment of the applied layer at about 120 to 230 ° C, expediently during 1/2 to 1 hour, the binder is hardened and the final hardness of the magnetic layer is reached. One Shortening of the hardening time as well as a lowering of the hardening temperature can be achieved by adding Curing catalysts such as acids, e.g. B. phosphoric acid or hexahydrophthalic acid. Subsequently generally the final surface is set by a conventional polishing process.
The method according to the invention is characterized by a simple and also when using the centrifugal casting method trouble-free executability. The improved binding capacity between pigment and Binder in the magnetic layer causes the same weight ratio of magnetic powder to After hardening, binders can be left with hard, adhesive and abrasion-resistant magnetic layers if desired let that one can speak of an enamel-like behavior of the surface.
It should be particularly emphasized that the binders and pigments used according to the invention can be used to produce dispersions of the magnetic pigments that are so good that, when applied by the centrifugal casting process, homogeneous layers are obtained which are free of any pigment agglomerations.
The parts and percentages given in the following example are units by weight, unless otherwise stated.
Parts by volume relate to parts like liters to kilograms.

The resulting dispersion is filtered twice and the homogeneous magnetic dispersion, as indicated above, is poured onto slowly rotating aluminum support plates. By increasing the number of revolutions to 1000 per minute, the excess is thrown off with the magnetic dispersion, and a uniform layer is obtained which is cured at 170 to 200 ° C. for one hour. After the subsequent polishing, a magnetic disk is obtained

When differentiating between magnetic recording media, an important criterion is the difference between useful signal and interference signal. A magnetic layer according to the invention is brought to a dry layer thickness of approx. 6 μίτι on a suitable metal carrier plate (e.g. circular aluminum disc) and describes it by rotating under a magnetic head with one sufficient for saturation Magnetic field, the interference voltage observed during the subsequent reading process is less than ah half the value than with known magnetic layers.
