The invention relates to a process for the production of magnetic recording media by producing a mixture based on finely divided magnetic particles, an improved binder and a solvent, the layered application of the dispersion of the magnetic particles in the binder and solvent to the carrier or the substrate and the subsequent drying and curing of the applied magnetizable coating layers. It is known to produce magnetic recording media by coating substrates, such as foils, tapes or plates made of plastic or non-magnetizable metals, with a dispersion of a magnetizable material, which must have certain minimum magnetic values, in a binder and organic solvent. In particular for the production of magnetic disks which are used for data storage, high requirements are placed on the generally very thin coating film. The coating formed should have very good adhesion to the substrate and be very resistant to solvents, temperature, moisture and, in particular, to abrasion. The coating, in which the magnetizable material is embedded in a binder, should be very hard on the one hand, but not brittle on the other hand. The binder used to produce the layer thus primarily determines the mechanical and chemical properties of the overall film. The use of modern magnetic tapes is high, and magnetic tape wear is a complicated process. The magnetogram carriers are exposed to heat and abrasion stresses ... 'and the damage to the tape due to the erosion of the layer containing magnetic particles can be caused by the abraded particles adhering to one another and adhering to the recording and playback heads as well as the back transfer of released material by the recording head to the magnetogram carrier take place. The type of material that is ground off is therefore also important. Various polymers and mixtures of various polymers have already been recommended as binders for the dispersion of the finely divided magnetic pigment.
Man
bekannt. Die bekannten Bindemittel befriedigen jedoch nicht
in allen
Punkten.
einpolymerisierten Struktureinheiten: 1. 40 - 80 Gew.% alkenylbenzolischen Kohlenwasserstoffen
B. 4 - 30 Gew.% an Polyvinylmethyläther verwendet.
härtbare Copolymerisat A soll weitgehend in den üblichen mitverwendeten Lösungsmitteln
So vermittelt z.
In
Comonomeren in Frage. Genannt seien Acryl- und Methacrylamid, Acrylnitril und Methaerylnitril,
Vinylchlorid und Vinylidenchlorid, N-Vinylamide und N-Vinyllactame, wie N-Vinyl-N-Methylacetamid
oder N-Vinyleaprolactam. Bevorzugte Copolymerisate bestehen z.
40
der BASF, verenden.
Vorteilhaft ist bei dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren, bei
dem ver-wendeten Bindemittelgemisch zusätzlich in Mengen
bis zu 30 und
insbesondere 8 bis 20 Gew.%, bezogen auf das
Copcbmerisat A eine härtbare Polyepoxidverbindung mitzuverwenden. Sehr geeignete
I)ari,i(:ti gIeßt man aus einem

The use of copolymers composed of predominant amounts of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride with comonomers, such as vinyl acetate, is known. Polyamides, combinations of butylated melamine-formaldehyde resin with polyvinyl butyral resin and a combination of epoxy resins with phenol-formaldehyde condensates have also been used as binders in the manufacture of magnetogram carriers. The use of a mixture of polyisocyanates and higher molecular weight hydroxyl compounds is also known. However, the known binders are not satisfactory in all respects. They sometimes make difficulties in processing by z. B. change their viscosity, or after oven drying and post-treatment they leave something to be desired with regard to their magnetic values or their chemical resistance. It has now been found that magnetogram carriers can be advantageously obtained by preparing a dispersion of finely divided magnetic pigment in a binder, a solvent and optionally customary additives, applying a layer of the dispersion to the carrier material and then drying and curing the applied layer, avoiding the known difficulties and can be produced with a significantly better binding of the magnetic powder in the layer if the binder used is a mixture of A. 70-96% by weight of a curable copolymer with the following structural units polymerized: 1. 40-80% by weight of alkenylbenzene hydrocarbons with 8 - 10 carbon atoms 2. 0-55% by weight of esters of acrylic and / or methacrylic acid with alkanols with 1-8 carbon atoms, 3. 5-40% by weight of N-methylolamides of acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid etherified with alcohols,. up to 15% by weight of olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids with 3-5 carbon atoms and / or up to 20% by weight of olefinically unsaturated monomers with an alcoholic hydroxyl group and 5. 0-30% by weight of a further monoolefinically unsaturated monomer with B. 4-30 % By weight of polyvinyl methyl ether used. It is also very advantageous to use up to 30% by weight of the copolymer A, a curable polyepoxide compound, in particular a polyglycidyl ether. The following can be said about the components of the binder mixture used in the process according to the invention: The curable copolymer A used should be largely soluble in the conventional solvents used and should be prepared from the monomers mentioned or contain the copolymerized structural units of these monomers in the stated amount in the copolymer. Of the alkenylbenzene hydrocarbons having 8 to 10 carbon atoms, styrene is preferably used. However, the use of vinyl toluenes, vinyl xylenes or d-methylstyrene is also possible. The alkenylbenzene hydrocarbons are polymerized into the copolymer in amounts of 40 to 80 and in particular 60 to 80% by weight. The use of larger amounts of styrene or vinyl toluene gives the layers a high degree of hardness. Suitable esters of acrylic and / or methaerylaic acid with alkanols having 1 to 8 carbon atoms are methyl methaerate, ethyl acrylate, tert-butyl (meth) acrylate, 2,2-dimethylpentyl ester and 2-ethylhexyl ester of (meth) acrylic acid as well Mixtures of these esters called. The selection of the amount and type of esters or ester mixtures depends on the desired modification of the properties, in particular the hardness and elasticity of the layer. So z. B. the use of the esters of acrylic acid with 5 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical in smaller amounts, for. B. in amounts of 5 to 25 wt.%, If larger amounts of styrene are used, the resulting layers have good elasticity. As examples of ethers of N-methylolamides of acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid with an alcohol and in particular an alcohol with 1 to 8 carbon atoms, which are polymerized in amounts of 5 to 40 and in particular 10 to 30% by weight in copolymer A or as their Structural units are included, the ethers of N-methylolacrylamide and N-methylol methacrylamide with N-butanol, isobutanol, 2-ethylhexyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether may be mentioned. The n-butyl ethers of N-methylol (meth) acrylamide are preferred. The copolymer should be in amounts of up to 15 and preferably in amounts of 1 to 10 wt contain both monomers in copolymerized form in the stated amounts. Acrylic or methacrylic acid are particularly suitable as olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids having 3 to 5 carbon atoms. But also crotonic acid or maleic acid can be used. The carboxylic acids used have the effect that the binder can be hardened at relatively lower temperatures; they also contribute to the hardness of the binder and to its adhesive strength on the substrates. Particularly suitable olefinically unsaturated monomers with an alcoholic hydroxyl group are monoesters of acrylic and / or methacrylic acid of a glycol, in particular half-esters of (oxa) alkanediols with 2 to 6 carbon atoms, such as the mono (meth) acrylates of 1,4-butanediol , 1,5-pentanediol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol. The use of olefinically unsaturated monomers with alcoholic hydroxyl groups facilitates the hardening of the binders and contributes to the solvent and temperature resistance of the layers produced with the copolymer as binder. In a manner customary per se, the copolymers used according to the invention as binder components can be modified by polymerizing up to 30 and in particular up to 20% by weight of a further monoolefinically unsaturated monomer. For this come mainly. the comonomers customary in the trade for the production of paint binders. Acrylic and methacrylamide, acrylonitrile and methaeryl nitrile, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, N-vinyl amides and N-vinyl lactams, such as N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide or N-vinyleaprolactam, may be mentioned. Preferred copolymers are z. B. from 60 to 80% by weight of styrene, 15 to 32% by weight of N-butoxymethyl-acrylamide or methacrylamide and 1 to 5% by weight of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. Copolymers of 50 to 72% by weight of styrene, 5 to 25% by weight of the ester and (meth) acrylic acid and an alkanol with 5 to 8 carbon atoms, 15 to 30% by weight of an ether of N-methylol ( meth) acrylamide, 3 to 10% by weight of a monoester of (meth) acrylic acid and an alkanediol having 3 to 4 carbon atoms and 1 to 5% by weight (meth) acrylic acid. The copolymers used according to the invention as a binder component can be used in a conventional manner, for. B. be prepared by Lösurigs-, suspension or emulsion copolymerization. The polyvinyl methyl ether used in amounts of 4 to 30 and in particular 8 to 20% by weight of the mixture as a binder component can be produced in a known manner (cf. Houben-Weyl, Methods of Organic Chemistry, 4th Edition, Volume 14/1, page
(R)
921). Commercially available products such as Latonal M 40
of BASF, die. Advantageously, in addition, based on the inventive method, in which comparable applied binder mixture in amounts up to 30 and in particular 8 to 20 wt.% Based on the Copcbmerisat A concomitantly use a curable polyepoxide compound. Very suitable polyepoxide compounds are the polyglycidyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols and polyhydric phenols, of which the polyglycidyl ether prepared from 2,2-bis (p-hydroxyphenyl) propane and epichlorohydrin has proven particularly useful. The magnetic pigment used is preferably finely divided rod-shaped or cube-shaped gamma iron (III) oxide, in particular one with an average particle size of 0.1 to 2 / u. In general, 70 to 140 and in particular 100 to 130 parts by weight of the binder mixture used according to the invention, based on the solids content, are used for the preparation of the dispersion of the magnetic pigment per 100 parts by weight of the gamma iron (III) oxide. Also suitable as magnetic pigments for this purpose are finely divided metal alloys of heavy metals, in particular iron, cobalt and / or nickel. To produce the dispersion of the magnetic pigment bsw. Magnetic powder this is expediently with the binder mixture used according to the invention and sufficient solvent by a conventional dispersing process, e.g. B. in the ball mill, dispersed. Suitable organic solvents for the preparation of the dispersions are aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene or xylene, glycol ethers such as ethyl glycol, glycol ether esters such as ethyl glycol acetate, alcohols such as propanol or butanol, ketones such as acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, their mixtures, and other no Varnish binders, common solvents and solvent mixtures. The binder can be dissolved in the agents and the magnetic pigment can be predispersed with this solution, but the binder, magnetic pigment and solvent can also be mixed directly in the dispersing device. The remaining constituents are added to this mixture either in the solid state or in the form of 20 to 60% strength solutions. It has proven to be expedient to continue the dispersion until an extremely fine distribution of the magnetic pigment is achieved, which can take 1 to 4 days. Subsequent repeated filtration results in a completely homogeneous magnetic dispersion. The dispersion can be applied in layer form to the carrier material by known methods. Because of the high hardness and the particularly good adhesive strength of the layers produced with the binders according to the invention and the very good pigment binding capacity of the binder mixtures, the process according to the invention has proven particularly useful for the production of magnetic disks using metallic, in particular aluminum, carrier plates. When applying the layers to metallic carrier plates or drums, the binder mixtures used according to the invention have also proven themselves in the centrifugal casting process described in US Pat. No. 2,913,246. The magnetic dispersion is kept in motion by means of a circulating apparatus, with further filtration taking place at the same time. I) ari, i (: ti, the mixture is poured from a movable arm onto the lirigFs-in rotating carrier plates. By increasing the rate to about 600 t) Ls 1000 per minute, excess of the magnetic dispersion is thrown off and thus a uniform layer the dispersion achieved on the plate. The back of the plate is then coated in the same way. It is easy to see that this expedient coating process places special demands on the properties of the magnetic dispersion and thus on the binders used. The binder is hardened and the final hardness of the magnetic layer is achieved by heat treatment of the applied layer at about 120 to 230 ° C., expediently for 1/2 to 1 hour. A shortening of the hardening time and a lowering of the hardening temperature can be achieved by adding hardening catalysts, such as acids, e.g. B. phosphoric acid or hexahydrophthalic acid. The final surface is then generally set by means of a customary polishing process. The method according to the invention is distinguished by a simple and trouble-free implementation even when using the centrifugal casting method. The improved pigment binding capacity of the binding agent of the magnetic layer means that, with the same weight ratio of magnetic powder to binding agent, after hardening, magnetic layers that are so hard, adherent and abrasion-resistant can be obtained that one can speak of an enamel-like behavior of the surface. The parts and percentages given in the following example are units of weight, unless otherwise stated. Example 3,000 parts of rod-shaped gamma-iron (III) oxide obtained by the acidic process as a magnetic pigment with an average particle size of 0.1 to lau, 60 parts of soy lecitin as a dispersant, 3,500 parts of ethyl glycol acetate and 924 parts of a 50% strength A solution of polyvinyl methyl ether in toluene is dispersed in a steel ball mill for 3 days. There are 5,800 parts of a 50% 1gen solution of a mixture of 91% of a copolymer of 70% styrene, 28; d Nn-butoxymethyl methacrylamide and 2% acrylic acid and 9 of a commercially available polyglycidyl ether of 2,2-bis (p-hydroxyphenyl ) propane and epichlorohydrin with an epoxide value of about 0.2 in a mixture of equal parts of butanol and xylene and 1,300 parts of ethyl glycol acetate and the mixture is further dispersed for 1 day. The resulting dispersion is filtered twice and the homogeneous magnetic dispersion is poured onto slowly rotating aluminum support plates as indicated above. By increasing the number of revolutions to 1,000 per minute, the excess is thrown off with the magnetic dispersion, and a uniform layer is obtained which is cured at 150 to 190 ° C. for one hour . After the subsequent polishing, a magnetic plate is obtained with a very abrasion-resistant magnetic layer, which is free from layer defects and has very good adhesive strength on the aluminum plate.
When differentiating between magnetic recording media
a
important criterion is the difference between the useful signal and
Interfering signal. If a magnetic layer according to the invention is applied with a dry layer thickness
of approx. 6 / u on a suitable metal carrier plate (e.g. circular aluminum disc)
and describes it by rotating under a magnetic head with one to saturation
sufficient magnetic field, the observed during the subsequent reading process is
Interference voltage only approx. Half the value than with known magnetic layers.
