Description
Process for the production of indanthrone in a vat dye A particularly suitable form of indanthrone is an industrially important process produced by the oxidation of leukoindanthron in water at a higher temperature.
Since the available raw dye in its fine distribution den required for use as a vat dye for dyeing or printing textile goods does not meet high requirements one includes the manufacturing process Finish on. The raw dye is usually in the form of filtration water-containing pressed material obtainable from the aqueous suspension after the addition of special Dispersants, such as lignosulfonic acid, by grinding into a finely dispersed form convicted. An aqueous dispersion of the finely divided dye is obtained or, after drying, a dye powder containing a dispersant, which can be converted back into a dye dispersion by stirring with water.
With this finish of the raw indanthrone, however, difficulties arise because the water-containing pressed material can only be converted with the dispersant into a concentrated dye dispersion with the required flowability. If one tries to eliminate these difficulties by adding further proportions of water, one obtains dye pulps with insufficient concentration, from which the excess water, which interferes with the preparation of the commercially available, highly concentrated dye dispersions, has to be removed again.
It has now been found that the difficulties mentioned in the preparation of indanthrone in a form particularly suitable as a vat dye by oxidation of the leucoindanthrone in, fasse r at a higher temperature with air can be avoided if the oxidation at temperatures of 50 to 100 ° C in the presence of compounds containing dolyethoxy groups.
The alkali salts of leukoindanthrone, such as the sodium or potassium salt of leukoindanthrone, are particularly suitable as starting materials. The alkali salts are preferably used as water-containing doughs, such as those obtained from synthesis. As starting materials, preference is given to using such alkali metal salts of leukoindanthrone as are used in the known production of In-. danthron can be inherited by fusing 2-Aminoanthtachir.on in a mixture of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. Compounds containing polyethoxy groups are primarily niQhtionogenic, water- and oil-soluble oxyethylation products of alcohols, phenols, amines, carboxylic acids and carboxamides, such as addition products of ethylene oxide with rosin, oleic acid or oil alcohol. Iffan adds one or more of the compounds containing polyethoxy groups mentioned, expediently in amounts of 0.1 to 10, preferably 0.3 to 5 percent by weight, based on indanthrone, to the reaction mixture.
In detail, the method according to the invention is carried out, for example. so that the alkali salts of the leukoindanthrons, as they are obtained in the synthesis, are heated in aqueous suspension in the presence of the above-mentioned compounds containing polyethoxy groups to temperatures of 50 to 100 ° C., preferably 70 to 90 ° C. At the same time, a strong stream of air is passed through the mixture until no more leuco compounds can be detected. The duration of the oxidation depends on the size of the batch. If a strong stream of air is blown in, the oxidation is complete in about 2 to 4 hours. The end of the reaction can be recognized, for example, from the fact that brown crystals of the leukoindanth.ron can no longer be seen in a sample under the microscope. The dye, which is in the form of only slightly agglomerated crystals with a width of 0.2 / u and the. length of 1 to 2 / u forms, is filtered off and washed. The pressed material obtainable in this way can be converted into the desired dye dispersion without difficulty. Thus, the pressed material liquefies very easily, in one d L - ## chen dispersant, such as lignosulfuric acid, the condensation product of B-naphthalenesulfonic acid and formaldehyde or other compounds of a similar type containing sulfonic acid groups Salts, add. Fine dispersion in an Ar wet mill gives dye dispersions whose flowability is sufficient at dye concentrations of 25 to 30 percent by weight. In contrast, the conventional method, ie without using the compounds containing polyethoxy groups, can only produce indanthrone dispersions with a dye concentration of about 15 to 20 percent by weight, from which, when dehydrated, the dispersions are only viscous and unusable.
The parts and percentages mentioned in the example relate to units by weight.
EXAMPLE 80 parts of an approximately 31% aqueous pressed material of alkali salts of leukoindanthrone (produced by fusing 2-aminoanthraquinone with a mixture of sodium and potassium hydroxide, discharging the melt in water, vatting, suctioning off and washing the residue) which have an indanthrone content of 24 parts are introduced into 450 parts of water in which 0.5 part of the adduct of 23 moles of ethylene oxide is emulsified with 1 mole of rosin. The mixture is heated to 800 ° C. with direct steam. Air is then passed through the mixture at this temperature until no more leuco compounds can be detected. The dye suspension is filtered in a filter press, washed neutral with water and blown out with air. The indanthrone is obtained in a yield of 24 parts in uniform crystals in the form of a water-containing pressed material with a dry matter content of 30 to -35 %. The material to be pressed can very easily be converted into a commercially available dye dispersion in the usual way.
