Description
Adjustment of the coercive force of the magnetic particles to the desired values without affecting the high remanent induction and the directivity of the magnetic particles is adversely affected. The one at room temperature The measured coercive force of oxidized iron-cobalt particles can be within a range of Set 350, preferably 500, to over 1800 Oersted range. Magnetic recording material with particularly high coercive force having magnetic particles is particularly suitable for Continuous supply of information and as a template for making contact copies from a conventional one Recording material containing gamma oxide particles having a lower coercive force.
In the method for producing a magnetic recording material according to the invention First, from an electrolyte containing iron and cobalt ions, particles are transferred to a mercury cathode precipitated electrolytically. The precipitated particles are very elongated and have a dendritic shape on. During the precipitation, the interface between the cathode and the electrolyte is kept steady. the Precipitated particles in the mercury are then aged at a higher temperature for so long until their internal coercive force has been reduced to the desired value. For those currently in use Recording devices this value fluctuates at room temperature from 350 to 2000 Oersted, however, it is usually around 500 to 1800 Oested. The particles can with one within Coercive force value lying in these areas can be established. In the case of thermal aging First, the coercive force of the particles increases as those formed during electrolytic precipitation dendritic branches are eliminated. In the course of the thermal aging process then increases due to a thermal growth process in the liquid mercury phase, the diameter of the Particles increase and the length of the particles decreases. This reduces the coercive force of the particles to the desired one Value. After aging, the particles are oxidized to form an iron-cobalt oxide layer on each particle to build. The oxidized particles are then replaced by any remaining mercury freed, dispersed in a binder and ground. The particle-binder mixture is then applied to a suitable non-magnetic support.
Der zur Ausfällung der Eisen-Kobalt-Teilchen verwendete Elektrolyt kann aus löslichen zweiwertigen Eisen- und Kobaltsalzen, beispielsweise Eisen- und Kobaltsulfat oder -chlorid, bestehen. Der pH des Elektrolyten sollte sauer gemacht werden, beispielsweise mit Schwefel- oder Salzsäure, und vorzugsweise ungefähr einen Wert von 2 haben. Die Anode kann eine sich verbrauchende Anode aus reinem Eisen, reinem Kobalt oder einer Eisen-Kobalt-Legierung oder auch eine sich nicht verbrauchende Anode aus einem neutralen Material, beispielsweise Platin, Blei oder Graphit, sein. Die Stromdichte kann innerhalb eines großen Bereiches geändert werden. Es hat sich herausgestellt, daß sich bei einer Stromdichte von 3 bis 90 mA/cm2 Teilchen ergeben, die in verdichtetem Zustand eine Koerzitivkraft von über 1500 Oersted aufweisen. Gewöhnlich ist die Ausfällungszeit um so kürzer, je höher die Stromdichte ist. Es hat sich herausgestellt, daß mit einer Stromdichte von 11 bis 22 mA/cm2 in Verbindung mit einer Fällzeit von 200 bis 480 Minuten optimale magnetische Eigenschaften erzielt werden. Es lassen sich jedoch auch mit anderen Stromdichte- und Zeitbereichen zufriedenstellende Ergebnisse erzielen. ;The current density can be changed within a wide range. It has been found that at a current density of 3 to 90 mA / cm 2, particles result which, in the compressed state, have a coercive force of over 1500 Oersted. Usually, the higher the current density, the shorter the precipitation time. It has been found that with a current density of 11 to 22 mA / cm 2 in conjunction with a precipitation time of 200 to 480 minutes, optimum magnetic properties are achieved. However, satisfactory results can also be achieved with other current density and time ranges. ;
After the precipitation, the particles are thermally aged by being heat-treated in mercury for 1 to 70 hours at a temperature of approximately 200 to 300 ° C. The originally elongated iron-cobalt-oxide particles gradually become rounder, as a result of which the orientation and the coercive force of the particles decrease. However, it has surprisingly been found that the alignment by a later processing step. can be restored. The rounder, non-elongated particles have a higher saturation magnetization (induction) than the elongated particles. It is assumed that the higher induction is due to the fact that the more rounded particles have a much larger diameter than the elongated particles, so that the ratio of metal core to oxide shell is higher in these particles. This is due to the fact that the thickness. Oxide shell is independent of the size or geometry of the particles. As the particle diameter increases, the proportion of the metal phase therefore increases. Metal particles are referred to here as elongated or elongated if the ratio between length and diameter is at least 2: 1 for at least half of the particles. The term not, elongated, or non-elongated is used when at least half of the particles have a length to diameter ratio of less than 2: 1.

During aging, the coercive force of the particles decreases as a function of the aging time and the aging temperature. In the above Table I, the particle diameter in Angstrom, the internal coercive force (Hei) and the orientation (Br / Bis) both in the mercury phase and after removal from the mercury phase and oxidation are given as a function of the aging time at 200 ° C. In a ventilated steel container, approximately 1.25 kg of precipitated particles were aged in 25 kg of mercury. The ratio of remanent induction to saturation induction (Br / Bis) is a measure of the orientation of the particles. A value of 1.00 corresponds to a theoretically complete alignment.
The diameter of the particles was measured using an electron microscope. It was found that the diameter of the particles increases; i.e., the average ratio of Length to diameter of the particles decreases from about 5 to almost 1. From Table I is also it can be seen that the orientation of the particles decreases with increasing aging time. How however As indicated below, this loss in alignment can be attributed to the appropriate distribution of the particles be balanced again.
In some cases it is desirable to precipitate non-elongated particles instead of elongated particles. This can be achieved by removing the mercury during the precipitation Moving electrolyte interface. The particles precipitated in this way are then essentially in treated in the same way as elongated particles. In the case of thermal aging of not elongated particles, however, would initially increase the coercive force as the particles grow and decrease after reaching a critical diameter. In any case, as the age increases Particles brought the coercive force of the particles to the desired value.
After aging, the particles are oxidized by exposure to humid air or with a chemical Oxidizing agents are brought together. The remaining mercury is then removed from the particles removed by vacuum distillation or flotation.
As electron diffraction images and X-rays show, there are two in the oxidized particles Phases present, namely a ferromagnetic core made of a solid solution of iron and cobalt, and a ferrimagnetic shell made of an iron-cobalt-spinel oxide. The oxygen content of the particles varies from 1 to 15 ° / o of the total weight of the Particle.
After the oxidation, the dried particles are ground, preferably in one Binders or solvents are dispersed that are used to fix the particles on a non-magnetic Carrier is used. When grinding, the agglomerated round particles are broken apart and then act as simple particles. As electron micrographs show, things are changing when grinding the particle dimensions do not. Subsequently, the particles can then be in the solvent-binder dispersion be aligned. From the following Table II it can be seen how the ratio Br / Bis gradually increases with increasing milling time is restored. The Br / Bis ratio became after aligning the particles in a DC field of 2500 Gauss measured. The particles were previously in mercury for about 3000 minutes long thermally aged. The coercive force of the particles after different meals is also specified.
The round particles with lower coercive force can thus be aligned if they are appropriately are distributed.
After grinding, the particle-binder dispersion becomes by one of the usual methods on a non-magnetic carrier or a non-magnetic carrier Base applied and in this way a magnetic tape or other recording material manufactured.
