Description
At a temperature of 1600 ° C., pyrocarbon is deposited from the methane gas on the outer surface of the particles, so that a first pyrocarbon layer is formed. After 30 minutes, the partial pressure of the methane is reduced in such a way that a change occurs in the shell structure. The decreased methane flow rate is maintained for a period of 20 minutes, after which it is increased again to its previous value for a further 20 minutes. The first pyrocarbon layer is now complete.
They are then re-introduced into the furnace, made flowable in a stream of argon gas and heated to 145 ° C 0. Methane gas is then let into the furnace and a second pyrocarbon layer is deposited on the envelope of the individual fuel particles. When the second layer is of the required thickness, the particles are removed from the furnace and a molded article is made by embedding the particles in a carbonaceous mold. Such shaped bodies were irradiated in a reactor at a temperature of 1500 ° C., so that 16.7% of the uranium 235 was burned off. Then the particles were taken out for examination. Photomicrographs of sections through particles at 200X magnification were taken. In the micrographs it can be clearly seen that the spear-point-shaped attack points of the diffusing fission products from the core of the particles are held up at the break formed between the covering layers by the action of air

The example described above primarily shows that the change or change in the envelope parameters to create an interruption between the individual applied coating layers does not necessarily create a barrier effective against fission product diffusion, but rather that a positive interruption of the encapsulation process, which includes that the particles of exposure to air is exposed to such an extent.
In der' nachstehenden Tabelle sind die typischen Umhüllungsparameter angegeben:The table below shows the typical coating parameters:
One can expect that air exposure at the marked indicated locations to that in the preceding Example described improved resistance to fission product diffusion leads.

The particles have to withstand the stresses of powder that the particles are subjected to during their use or sintering metallurgy techniques. As is known, a double cladding is provided from zirconium, uranium 235 and carbon together, the two each consisting of a core. According to these techniques, pyrocarbon consisting of, however, different zirconium carbide and uranium monocarbide with layers having a light carbon structure are mixed to form furfural alcohol binders, whereupon it stops (Atompraxis 1963, pp. 259 to 264). Carbon spherical structures or coatings can be placed under the resulting mixture and sintered, from which spheres with suitable temperature conditions arise on the surface with a diameter of about 400 μ, which are formed as the particles by deposition from a carbon core Serving the coated nuclear fuel particles, apply hydrogen gas. When the temperature approaches 1600 ° C., in the form of a number of skins arranged one on top of the other, methane gas is let into the furnace, which is therefore also known as the onion structure, together with the argon.
