Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The compounds that have been used for electrical insulation since then have a low level of insulation, Suppleness and resistance to chemical influences some things to be desired. An insulating agent which is excellent in every respect can be given if it is adhered to prepare certain conditions from asphalt and petroleum as predominant components. The proportions of the asphalt and petroleum vary depending on the purpose for which the isolating agent is intended, between 70:30 and 40:60.
For the production of the isolating agent, which is the subject of the invention, is essential required that the asphalt be at a temperature above its melting temperature heated for days in the absence of air until all unpleasant smelling components, especially the volatile sulfur compounds, are removed, otherwise retained you do not have a good, even, elastic insulating material. Sufficient for asphalt of the best quality heating for about 72 hours at about 160 °. The asphalt so treated, which is deep black, is shiny and homogeneous, it is now mixed with smaller or larger quantities of petroleum, depending on whether you want a harder or wants to produce more pliable material. For this purpose the asphalt is melted, add the petroleum brought to the same temperature and then add Stir with a solution which is obtained when about 1 percent by weight of the asphalt petroleum mixture in aluminum oxide hydrate in the straight line to its solution The required amount of acetic acid dissolves, then continue with a little rosin and alkali. It there is a very strong foaming of the whole mass, whereby the absolutely necessary intimate mixing is achieved, and further the material is preserved by the addition of acetic acid Alumina has a special toughness, while the addition of resin and alkali turns the petroleum into a semi-solid form is transferred, which is necessary for obtaining the required elasticity and consistency of the isolating agent is necessary .. The amount of resin is about 7 percent, that of alkali about 8 percent of the weight of the whole mass. The mixture is now heated for some time with constant stirring at a temperature at which the The mass is well fluid, and then lets it cool down. A perfectly safe explanation for the peculiar Mode of action of the acetic acid clay can, for. Z. not be given; probably the acetate reacts with the resin soap made from alkali and resin instead of forming clay soap.
The product produced in this way has an ebony color, softens at a relatively low temperature (about 70 ° C.), hardens again quickly when it cools, is particularly flexible, so that it is also ideally suited for covering wires, has absolute insulating properties and is through strong hydrochloric acid and acetic acid, dilute nitric and sulfuric acid, ammonia, alkalis, water, even salt water not attacked in the least.

From the ridding of the asphalt from malodorous ones, in particular sulfur-containing substances in the manner described above is disclosed in the patent not spoken. It is also known (Jeep, Der Asphalt, 1899, pp. 33, 100, 102, 128), coal tar or to mix pitch with resin and slaked lime in the heat and at water bath temperature by heating resin to produce a putty with little asphalt and lime dust. The products made in this way do not contain the two main raw materials considered in the present process, Asphalt and petroleum (even the above-mentioned putty contains very little asphalt); nor do those from the present description appear in their production clearly visible moments in use, which form the feature of the invention. The products obtained according to the references cited are therefore after manufacture and composition different from that of the present process. Finally has one also recommended a paving material made from slag with very little asphalt or asphalt cement used for paving becomes more pliable by adding a little petroleum to make (American patent specifications 195318 and 514045). With this one Process, however, is by no means just a matter of softening Asphalt by little petroleum, but it is about the production of an isolating agent from asphalt and petroleum subjected to a precisely marked pre-treatment as the main raw materials under treatment of the mixture of both substances in the heat with dissolved acetic clay - which treatment is absolutely necessary - and careful mixing with little alkali and resin.
