Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The multiple attempts to make larger string instruments (pianos) better resonate to give than they are provided by the usual soundboards, of course, has long since had to be tried led to replace the soundboards with soundboxes in the style of violin bodies, etc. These attempts alone are after Opinion of the inventor of the present subject has not yet resulted in a favorable result, because mostly only on the shape of the box, but not on the interaction of the individual Weight was placed on parts of the box in order to achieve the most perfect possible resonance. How a bell stops instantly to resonate if it is touched only in one place, it should also in one Resonance box the tone only resonates fully when it is correctly introduced and the freedom from vibration of the box is not significantly impaired.
This consideration forms the starting point of the present invention, which follows is explained in more detail.
The resonance box itself does not differ significantly from the known ones and can be of any shape. In the drawings it is shown as a closed square box, the two larger wall surfaces a of which are curved outwards. Ribs b and supports c braced between them serve to stiffen these large surfaces. The box is held in notch e by frames d . The wall surface facing the mechanics carries the string bridges f and f l and has sound holes g and g l . These parts are usually also used in other resonance boxes, but here they are differently arranged and designed in such a way that they all work together to achieve the overall effect, which, as mentioned above, forms the basic idea of the present invention.
First of all, all these parts had to be made as resilient as possible and not impair the vibration. For this purpose, the ribs are not made from one piece, as is customary, but instead consist of three wooden strips thickened towards the middle, the profile of which is shown in FIG. By gluing and pressing them together, they are given the shape shown in FIG. 2a, which completely adjoins the curvature of the box wall α. This composition of the ribs from just three bands gives them a permanent resilient force and causes the pieces to work evenly (this would not be the case with two or four bands). However, it also makes it possible to use very thin, therefore easily vibrating ribs, due to the extraordinary strength achieved, and indeed in very small numbers (here only three, compared to fourteen in other types), which of course affects the ability of the walls to vibrate much less than when applying a large number of ribs. Rubber plates are inserted between the ribs and supports. The fastening of the whole box in the notches with the help of the wedge-shaped frame is favorable to the ability to vibrate, because with the wedge-shaped shape of the frame, these proportions
mäßig wenig auf den vorderen Boden einwirkt, während die breitere Fläche der Zarge genügenden Halt bietet und infolgedessen zwischen Zarge und Wand noch ein Luftraum freigelassen werden kann.acts moderately little on the front floor, while the wider surface of the frame is sufficient Provides support and as a result, an air space can still be left free between the frame and the wall.
Finally, the string bridge or bridges, which are otherwise rectangular in profile, are tapered downwards and provided with recesses (Fig. 3) to make them also elastic, and the otherwise the rigid space on the soundboard is created by the completely adjacent bridges to get vibratory.
If the resonance box is able to vibrate as perfectly as possible in this way, the arrangement of the sound holes brings about the correct introduction of the sound, the oscillation of the sound waves and their removal. Through the S-sound holes g x provided directly below the stop line of the hammers in graduated size, the waves of the sound immediately penetrate the box, where they come to a calm decay and emerge again through the other (the usual) sound holes g. The interaction of all these factors is intended to achieve a particularly good response.
