Description
Process for the manufacture of delayed absorbable surgical Sutures The invention is based on the object of delayed absorption surgical sutures by post-treatment of extruded collagen threads or - to manufacture ribbons.
The production of collagen threads e.g. from tendons of cattle is known.
The rate of resorption of surgical sutures Collagen can be obtained by using the finished, untanned threads with suitable additives, such as. B. tanning agents, treated individually or in groups can be applied.
The invention relates to a process for the production of delayed Resorbable surgical sutures by post-treatment of extruded Collagen threads or bands, which is characterized in that the thread strands leads through at least two different solutions one after the other, one of which consists of a quinone and the other of an aldehyde together with a chromium salt.
The quinone used is p-benzoquinone, the sodium salt of 1,2-naphthaquinone-4-sulfonic acid or use p-toluquinone.
It is expedient to first use an aqueous, approximately 0.32 part of formaldehyde and about 1.0 part of chromium as a chromium oxide containing solution having a pH of about 3.5 and then a solution of p-benzoquinone.
The sole use of the first solution of quinone has no noticeable effect Effect on the absorption time in the living organism or the strength of the collagen strand; but if this treatment is followed by a second treatment with formaldehyde, the Improved absorption time in the living organism. It is known that formaldehyde only slightly the original absorption time of the collagen in the living organism increased, but if the formaldehyde is used alone in the appropriate amount, in order to improve the properties in the living organism, the strand becomes brittle, and the knot strength is decreased. By successive treatments of the strand with a quinone solution and a formaldehyde solution is the absorption time Greatly improved in the living organism without the strand becoming brittle entry. The purpose of using chrome in the second bath is to increase its tear resistance to improve the final strand. Chromium alone has little effect on absorption time of collagen in the living organism at the concentrations used according to Invention.
It is clear to the person skilled in the art that the same results are achieved when the order of application of the solution is reversed and the collagen first is treated with a chromium-formaldehyde solution and then with a quinone solution.
The formaldehyde and the chromium can also be separated in different ways Solutions are applied.
The starting material for the process of the present invention consists z. B. from a connected multiple collagen thread, hereinafter referred to as a collagen band referred to as. This material is ribbon-like in shape and made up of about twenty built up to five hundred individual collagen single threads. The collagen band can in a manner not claimed here, essentially by extruding a dispersion pure swollen tendon collagen fibers through a multiple spinneret into an alkaline one Acetone dehydration bath can be prepared. The multiple threads as they come from the Spinning bath emerge, are very easily united and almost circular in cross-section; however, the threads are pulled out of the spinning bath by a rotating roller, and the tension exerted on the wet filaments as they pass over the roller surfaces run, ties the individual threads together to form a ribbon-like strand. If the connected multiple threads is dried, the ribbon-like shape is retained. From the foregoing can you can see that the individual threads are held together by cohesive forces to form the collagen band.
. . 0,32 Teile Wasser .......................... 99,68 Teile Mischung eingestellt auf pH 5,6 mit Natriumhydroxyd. Example 1 The following solutions were used: a) Chromium (III) sulfate as chromium oxide. 1.0 part formaldehyde ............. .... 0.32 part deionized Water .............. 98.68 parts mixture adjusted to pH 3.5 with sodium hydr oxide. b) formaldehyde ....... . 0.32 parts of water .......................... 99.68 Parts of mixture adjusted to pH 5.6 with sodium hydroxide.
The strand thus obtained is then immersed in a solution of 1.0 for 1 hour Part submerged p-benzoquinone and 99 parts distilled water. The strand will rinsed in acetone and air dried.
Example 2 A strand of collagen is made into a solution for 1 hour 1.0 part of the sodium salt of 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonic acid and 99 parts of deionized Immersed in water. The strand is then rinsed in acetone and dried.
The sutures treated in accordance with the invention contain about 0.02 up to about 0.92 01o quinone.
