Description

Reference electrode for pH measurement The invention relates to a reference electrode such as those used in connection with measuring the pH of liquids used with glass electrodes. Electrode chains for pH measurement are through their constant contact with the liquid to be measured is slightly contaminated because the media to be measured are in most cases not clear solutions, but rather Suspensions, which are finely divided undissolved solid or gelatinous components contain. Accordingly, electrode chains have to be removed very frequently and regularly the contaminants deposited on their active surfaces are freed, what results in unpleasant interruptions in the measurement. To interrupt the measurement It is known to avoid the glass electrode of pH electrodes during operation without interrupting the measurement mechanically by wiping with an elastic To clean the wiper blade. This is possible because the glass electrodes through the active surface of the glass membrane, which is at risk of contamination, is essentially smooth is. In addition to the glass electrode, the reference electrode of the measuring chain is also the Exposed to pollution. This can also have a detrimental effect on the measurement. Mechanical cleaning of the reference electrode would therefore not be successful because the part of this electrode affected by the contamination is a diaphragm which is the electrolyte inside the reference electrode housing, for example the potassium chloride solution, separates from the liquid to be measured. The fine pores of the diaphragm are suspended in the liquid to be measured Particles become clogged and cannot be removed from them mechanically. The invention enables the reference electrode of a pH electrode to be used for a longer period of time without interruption to keep the measurement in operation.

The invention relates to a reference electrode for pH measurement in liquids containing soluble impurities in connection with a glass electrode. What is inventive is that the inside of the reference electrode, prevented by a diaphragm from direct transfer into the measuring liquid Electrolyte, which removes the contamination of the diaphragm by the measuring liquid, Substance that does not influence the measurement properties of the reference electrode is added is.

The additive used depends on the components of the measuring liquid, which cause contamination of the electrode. As an example, reference is made to that when measuring the pH of the juices in sugar production, precipitation is particularly important calcium carbonate on the electrodes leads to contamination of the electrodes. Around According to the invention, the electrolyte liquid can prevent pollution Inside the housing of the reference electrodes a substance can be added, which forms soluble complexes with this precipitate. Various polyphosphates are used for this or complexon can be used. These substances are added to the electrolyte and prevent it by the constant leakage of a small amount of liquid through the pores of the Diaphragm any precipitate in the pores.

The drawing shows a known reference electrode for pH measurement in connection with a glass electrode. The vessel 1 contains an electrolyte, preferably a solution of potassium chloride. Inside the vessel 1 is the electrolyte submerged calomel half-cell 3 arranged. The electrical connection between the electrolyte 2 and the measuring liquid in which the reference electrode is immersed is, is produced by the diaphragm 4, which at the same time a mixing the measuring liquid with the electrolyte 2 prevented.

According to the invention, the electrolyte 2 is a small amount of one added with the pollution detachable complex compounds forming substance. The dirt-dissolving additive frees when it passes through the pores of the diaphragm, as has been shown, this from contamination and influences the measuring properties the electrode does not.
