Description
Binoculars with Protective Cover It has long been common practice to cover the housing parts of binoculars to protect against impact, scratches, corrosion and the like with a leather cover to provide.
According to the invention it was surprisingly found that binoculars can be made floatable if, instead of the known leather cover, protective covers made of a material with a suitably low specific weight are used. In this way it is possible to reduce the weight of the glass, based on its total volume, at least so far that the glass floats in the water. While it is generally useful to make binoculars as light as possible, as this largely avoids fatigue when using the glass with your free hand, the buoyancy of the binoculars is a decisive advantage where there is a risk of the glass falling into the water falls, especially during water sports such as sailing or paddling and the like. If known glasses accidentally fall into the water, they are immediately lost and are generally irretrievably lost for the owner. A glass designed according to the invention, on the other hand, floats and can easily be fished out of the water again. By the simplest means, namely the choice of a suitable covering material, sensitive losses can often be avoided in this way.
Cork covers have proven to be particularly suitable. Cork boards are commercially available in various thicknesses and can easily be processed as coatings. In a practical application example, it was determined that the total weight of a pair of binoculars with a leather silver cover of 455 g was reduced by 60 g when the glass was immersed in water by replacing the leather cover with a 2 mm thick cork cover, an amount that was sufficient to make the glass floatable close. In addition to their low weight, cork covers have the further advantage compared with the usual leather covers that the protection against impact of the glass is considerably improved because of the favorable cushioning properties of the cork.
The drawing shows an embodiment of binoculars designed according to the invention, the body 1 and lens supports 2, 3 of which have protective coatings 4, 5 and 6 , respectively, made of a layer of cork.
