Description
Polyamide molding compounds made from polypyrrolidone which can be pressed from the melt The invention relates to polyamide molding compositions made from polypyrrolidone which can be pressed from the melt with additions of organic compounds.
It has been known for some time that polypyrrolidone has certain desirable properties Has properties that make it ideal for the manufacture of fibers or films make it suitable but because of its unusual physical properties previously not allowed to be used for the production of other commodities. It was z. B. found that polypyrrolidone is different from others in several ways known polyamides and its behavior therefore not by analogy can be predicted. Because of its thermal instability, it is referred to as or rapidly degraded even slightly below its melting point, with monomeric pyrrolidone is formed and the inherent viscosity of the polymer decreases. Polypyrrolidone even differs fundamentally in its properties from those described so far Condensation polyamides. It has been found that general conditions are necessary to treat of the previously known condensation polyamides are completely suitable for polypyrrolidone are useless. Even the manufacturing processes are different because of polypyrrolidone is not a linear condensation polyamide in the usual sense, since it is not under Exit a simple molecule is formed. As far as is known so far, the difficulties encountered in processing polypyrrolidone are unusual or unique because of the physical properties of polypyrrolidone differ in many details from those of other polyamides, so that for each Processing stage new treatment conditions had to be worked out without that they could be taken over from what was previously known.
So it was - as shown in the following comparison tests below is set out - in no way close to the person skilled in the art, for example in the German Patent 740 348 mentioned additives for their suitability as melting point depressants to investigate for polypyrrolidone molding compounds.
It was previously known to use solutions of polypyrrolidone in anhydrous To manufacture formic acid and such solutions for casting polypyrrolidone films to use. It was also known to have low molecular weight, non-dissolving acids besides Use formic acid to make the film cloudy and opaque Prevent crystallization. These known solutions are now to be poured out of films on glass surfaces and for wet or dry spinning for the purpose of manufacture of fibers, but they are not suitable for continuous casting on a hot roll or suitable for extruding films or spinning fibers from the melt. For the production of films and fibers one expediently starts from the melt, because such a process can be carried out conveniently and quickly and is economical Working on a large scale allowed.
It has now been found that a molding compound containing polypyrrolidone, which are suitable for the continuous extrusion of films or fibers from the melt and to make it clearer, more see-through, not more oriented, little or at all non-crystallized films or fibers are suitable by incorporating the im the following substances described can be obtained.
The molding compositions according to the invention are characterized in that they are 50 to 90 percent by weight of catalyst-free polypyrrolidone and 10 to 50 percent by weight contain an organic compound which is inert towards the polypyrrolidone and a solubility parameter of 10 to 20, a boiling point above 150 ° C 760 mm Hg and a melting point below 270 ° C.
The resulting masses can flow in their state between and solid fluctuate at room temperature, but have melting temperatures below that of pure polypyrrolidone, which increases the tendency of the polymer to break down molecules and to education of monomers during processing considerably is reduced.
The "solubility parameter" (cf. e.g. Deutsche Farbenzeitschrift, 1960, p. 221/222) of the substances suitable for use according to the invention a constant characteristic of every organic compound. He can be known from or determinable physical constants can be calculated in various ways. In Official Digest, Vol. 27, No. 369, October 1955, pp. 726-758, there is a number of methods for determining solubility parameter values have been described, and the values have been given for a large number of compounds. Of the Solubility parameter can also be called the square root of the cohesive energy density be expressed. The cohesive energy density itself could therefore also be used for identification the agents which can be used according to the invention are used; are the solubility parameter values however, smaller and more convenient to use and are therefore needed here.
The organic melting point depressants used herein are expedient liquids or low-melting solids, which, as mentioned, boil at atmospheric pressure at temperatures above about 150 ° C and those below the Extrusion conditions, d. H. Temperatures up to about 270 ° C below inert Atmospheres are stable, d. H. not be decomposed. Usually be lower Boiling liquids are used in such an amount that the mass is not excessive foams, but such substances can optionally also be used under excess pressure will. For convenient work, however, preference is given to substances that are unaffected by others obey the specified requirements and which boil above approx. 200 ° C. If also solid substances can be used as melting point depressants, so should these melt below the temperature at which the melted polypyrrolidone is squeezed out, d. H. about 270 ° C if they are to be practical.
Those used to lower the melting point of polypyrrolidone Agents do not need to be solvents for the polymer. Of course you can too Solvents can be used, but the invention is not limited to manufacture a real solution, but only a lowering of the melting point and / or the melt viscosity directed. This result can be achieved through substances which are normally not to be regarded as solvents. So z. B. Sorbitol, pentaerythritol, caprolactam, acetamide or even low molecular weight polymers, z. B. low molecular weight polyethylene glycol, the parameters of which are in the specified range fall, used.
It has been found that mixtures containing polypyrrolidone and one or contain several of the organic substances listed above, serve to make the To soften polypyrrolidone or to let it melt at low temperatures, so that it can be pressed or spun from the melt without being Molecular weight, as would otherwise be the case, is noticeably affected. The melt viscosity the mass is in most cases lower than that of the polypyrrolidone alone, so that the squeezing speed is increased considerably. It should be noted that the Compositions according to the invention represent real solutions at their liquefaction temperatures can, although at lower temperatures a phase separation and formation of a gel-like mass that can show syneresis when standing. The synergized The mass can be reheated to melt to be pressed out. In any case it will found that the compositions according to the invention are spun or pressed from the melt can be if the extrusion device customary for this purpose is used. Thereafter, all can be used to lower the melting point of the polymer Substances left in the extruded film or fiber, if any can be removed by washing, solvent extraction or evaporation.
A polypyrrolidone suitable for use in the masses according to the invention can have been produced by one of the known processes and is expedient a relatively high molecular weight. Also with regard to their molecular weight very strongly fluctuating polypyrrolidone polymers are suitable.
One of the advantages of the method according to the invention is that the The tendency of the polypyrrolidone to crystallize, which occurs at lower temperatures, z. B. when casting @Polypyrrolidonfilms from solutions in a known manner, is very pronounced when working at higher temperatures, as is the case with the invention Masses is possible, is severely restricted. It is z. B. found that clear, clear films. made from polypyrrolidone with very little or no propensity to crystallize easily at temperatures up to about 200 ° C with the masses according to the invention can be poured from the melt. This temperature range is apparently above the crystallization temperature of the polypyrrolidone, which is likely to be around 150 ° C.
The compositions of the invention are under normal storage conditions Resistant for a long time and can if heated before pouring or pressing and then cooled down again without being shed. used again without affecting the identified products. they are furthermore stable for a relatively long time at their liquefaction temperatures, although of course some evaporation lower boiling of the constituents can be expected is. The polypyrrolidone is not at all or only slightly under these conditions degraded, and the liquefied masses are longer in terms of their viscosity Persistent for periods of time as long as the melting point depressant is not lost. An advantage of the films or fibers made according to the invention is the fact that they do not discolor as easily when standing as those known to date Process obtained products.
The polymerization mixture in the production of polypyrrolidone contains, among other things, polymer, alkaline catalyst, ash-forming substances and pyrrolidone monomer. In order to increase the rapid degradation of the polymer when heated prevent the alkaline catalysts and ash-forming substances must be removed be, and for this purpose it is washed, whereby also all monomeric pyrrolidone is effectively removed. Polypyrrolidone therefore contains too little monomer for this could have an effect on the melting point. However, it has been found that pyrrolidone, if it is sufficient for the polymer Amount is added, actually lowers the melting point of the mixture. The presence of pyrrolidone in the Purified polymer does not lead to a further polymerization, but surprisingly the melt viscosity is in roughly the same way as by one of the the means given here are reduced.
As mentioned, the compositions according to the invention consist of 50 to 90 percent by weight Polypyrrolidone and 10 to 50 weight percent amount of melting point depressant. It is preferable to use so much melting point depressant that there is a certain one Causes lowering of the melting point of polypyrolidone, d. H. up to about 30 weight percent. The liquefaction temperatures of the masses obtained vary between about Melting point of polypyrrolidone, namely about 270 and about 200 ° C or below with increasing amounts of the anti-depressant drug.
Generally speaking, the masses are created by simply mixing them together of the two components. The polypyrrolidone is in finely divided form is used, and when the other ingredient is liquid, it is usually used with simple Mixing is soaked up by the powder, leaving an apparently dry mixture will. On the other hand, when viscous liquids or solid substances are used, the compositions of the invention can be prepared by the polymer and the melting point depressant can be heated together with stirring until a a practically homogeneous mass has been obtained, usually as a liquefied melt, which may be see-through, but sometimes not become completely clear. Possibly use it immediately or cool it down and use it at a later date. Of course, other manufacturing processes can also be used, e.g. B. Dissolve the ingredients in a mutually inert low-boiling solvent and then removing the solvent. Albeit crowds that are around 70 to 50 percent by weight polypyrrolidone can be used, in particular because such masses in the relatively low temperature range from 180 to 210 ° C can be cast into films, is the casting of films at temperatures up to about 240 ° C possible, with fewer melting point depressants containing Masses are used.
The masses are used to produce fibers by spinning processes, e.g. B. by squeezing at the melting point, usable. Usually be for this Purpose preferred compositions containing 80% or more polypyrrolidone. After this Squeezing is usually the melting point depressant vaporized, or it is squeezed directly into solvent, which is the organic melting point depressant can remove from the polypyrrolidone. The choice of which to use for this purpose Solvent can easily according to the properties of the substance to be dissolved to be hit. Another method may be the organic melting point depressant remain in the finished article as a plasticizer. The crowds can also go to Manufacture of shaped objects such as tubes, threads, rods or strips, serve by pressing out of the melt at elevated temperatures.
The following examples, in which, unless otherwise stated, all parts are parts by weight, describe in detail the preparation and properties of the compositions according to the invention. Example 1 30 parts of glycerol are added to 70 parts of pure, finely divided polypyrrolidone with an intrinsic viscosity of 1.53. The mixture is gently stirred with a paddle stirrer until all of the glycerine has been adsorbed by the polypyrrolidone. The resulting mixture is a powder that appears somewhat moist, but does not differ in color from the original polymer. To determine the melting point of the mixture, an appropriate amount is carefully heated in a small flask while stirring with a thermometer. At around 200 ° C, the mixture begins to soften and finally turns into a melt. The heat source is then removed from the container and stirring is continued while the container is air-cooled. The point at which crystallization just begins is reported as the melting point of the mixture. For the mass produced here from 70 parts of polymer and 30 parts of glycerine, the melting point obtained in this way is 215 ° C.
When the mass produced as described above is squeezed out the following procedure is used: A conventional squeezing device is used, which consists of a steel drum with about 19 mm inside diameter and 30.5 cm Length lined with a hard alloy and with two adjustable outer ones Heaters, one at the front or nozzle end and the other at the rear or Filling end of the drum, is provided, a filling funnel, at its attachment point the drum is surrounded by a cooling jacket, an extrusion nozzle and a rotatable one inner screw conveyor is made of hardened steel, driven by a variable speed motor Speed is driven. The mass is poured into the filling funnel and using the screw conveyed in the direction of the extrusion nozzle, at the same time the granular Compressed mass and kneaded to a certain extent with some heating. The mass is sufficiently heated by means of the external heating devices, so that it melts when it enters the extrusion nozzle, or in the rear part of the extrusion nozzle can be melted by moderate further heating. The melted polymer is pressed through the openings of the nozzle, and the resulting threads are as long as they are still warm and plastic, pulled out, using suitable means, e.g. Am a bath of a liquid that does not dissolve the polymer, cooled and transferred to a suitable roll wound up. The strength of the thread depends on the speed the winding, the pulling, the pulling distance before cooling and the viscosity of the molten polymer from. The degree of orientation of the thread, which is preferably low is held, in particular by the train between the winder and the cooling medium.
The polymer dimensions prepared above are pressed out under the following conditions: A bath of Stoddard solvent (a type of petroleum ether) is used to quench the fiber and the latter is wound up at a speed of 305 m per minute. The spinneret has an opening with an inner diameter of 1.5 mm. The screw conveyor has a flight of 4.75 mm per 17.5 mm length, 19.05 mm outer diameter and gives a compression ratio of 2.5. It runs at around 84 revolutions per minute. The mass containing glycerine is added to the hopper at intervals under nitrogen, so that the amount transported by the screw is replenished. The rear heater is not switched on and the front, at the extrusion end (in the compression zone) is set to 254.5 ° C. The molten polymer is forced through the opening and the resulting thread is passed about 10 inches through the quench bath and then over a rotating drum to maintain an even pulling speed and finally wound onto a spool or spool of thread in a practically unoriented state. The thread has an intrinsic viscosity of 1.16. After stretching by about 6000 /, immediately after pressing, a colorless, oriented fiber with a thickness of about 1500 denier and an elongation at break of about 3 g per denier is obtained.
Tetrahydrofurfurylalkohol, Pentaerythrit, Sorbit oderHarnstoff verwendet.
Example 4 A mixture of 10 parts of purified distilled pyrrolidone and 90 parts of polypyrrolidone with an intrinsic viscosity of 2.0 gradually becomes heated to about 235 ° C at which point the mixture became a clear, colorless melt forms. The melt is then on a warm smooth aluminum surface of about 180 Brought to 200 ° C and spread into a thin film using a doctor blade. The pyrrolidone evaporates easily and after about 2 minutes the aluminum is cooled and the clear, pliable, tough, see-through, unoriented film of polypyrrolidone removed.

To prove the above statements that the usefulness the additives according to the invention for polypyrrolidone based on the prior art was not foreseeable and that polypyrrolidone behaves differently than other polyamides, the following comparative tests were carried out.
For the comparative experiments, samples of polypyrrolidone and - as examples of typical polyamides - an aminoscaproic acid polycondensate and a polycondensate of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid used in granular form; ethylene glycol was used as a melting point depressant.
The intrinsic viscosity of each of these three substances was determined according to the standard test method determined in 0.2% solution in m-cresol. Then a small amount of the affected one Polymers of different lengths at or near their melting temperatures between heated plates pressed to produce a thin, sheet-like structure. Thereon was the intrinsic viscosity of the films obtained using the standard test method determined in a manner similar to that described above. The received data go from the following Table IV.
Then proportions of the same three samples were made according to the invention Subject to treatment, d. That is, the polymers were treated by being treated with Ethylene glycol in an amount of 85 parts by weight of the polymer to 15 parts by weight Ethylene glycol were mixed. The homogeneous mixture obtained was exactly as described above, between heated plates, but at about 14 ° C lower Temperature, pressed. The inherent viscosity of the obtained films was again measured as described above. The data obtained go from the following Table V.
Mokäwichtes an.
The untreated polycondensate of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid practically no loss of intrinsic viscosity when heated; if but the treated polycondensate of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid is heated and is pressed, there is a noticeable reduction in the intrinsic viscosity, i. H. a noticeable tendency to degrade, suggesting a decrease in molecular weight suggests.
The untreated polypyrrolidone suffers when heated and pressed a substantial loss of its intrinsic viscosity, d. H. a significant reduction the polymer properties, resulting in a strong reduction in molecular weight for untreated polymer. A much smaller reduction in the However, molecular weight was found when the treated polypyrrolidone pressed and heated. The comparative experiments described show that that by treating polypyrrolidone in accordance with the teachings of the present invention the temperature stability of polypyrrolidone is so much improved that one that Treated polypyrrolidone can easily be pressed into foils or injected into fibers can. In the case of aminocaproic acid polycondensate, the new type of treatment is of no use Improvement. Polycondensate from hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid even shows one adverse effect after treatment, d. H. a significant reduction in the Molecular weight, which is not recorded for the corresponding untreated sample was.
The above comparison tests are proof that Polyamides do not behave in the same way with one another towards certain additives and that the results achieved according to the invention from the teachings of the German patents 740 348 and 970 066 as well as the French patent specification 869 242 could not be foreseen was.
