Method for casting metals When casting particularly high-silt
Metal alloys in a form find a more or less strong interaction
of the liquid metal with the walls of the casting mold and the surrounding atmosphere
instead of. This often leads to undesirable side effects, such as B. Oxyd-,
Slag or foam formation, sintering processes and the like. These difficulties arise
not only for casting molds made from mineral molding compounds, but also for chill casting
on. This is where the strong attack is particularly effective in the case of refractory metals
of the liquid metal especially on the service life of the mostly metallic mold
unfavorable. Attempts have therefore been made in many ways to overcome these difficulties
to encounter, e.g. B. by pouring in an inert atmosphere, by coating the
metallic or non-metallic hollow form with refractory materials etc. metal molds
are often tried to protect by sooting or painting with mold varnish.
However, these remedial attempts either require significant effort, such as this
Pour under protective gas, or they are not very effective. They continue to perform frequently
to loss of quality of the castings or other technical or physiological
Disadvantages, such as the mixing of the molding sand, which is common in gray foundries
with carbonaceous substances. The effect of such substances as graphite,
Soot, tar, coal dust and the like have been explained as meaning that the carbon they contain
reacts with the oxygen present in the mold cavity, with the formed
Gases prevent an immediate reaction of the melt with the mold walls and
create an inert atmosphere.
The invention has set itself the task of eliminating the disadvantages of the previous modes of operation with simple means. For this purpose, it provides a method for casting of molten metals or alloys into a mold or produced in a conventional manner cavity of a Gießforin, wherein the cavity of the casting mold or ingot mold prior to the casting of partly or mainly with particles' of a thermoplastic material, preferably synthetic resin foam , filled and the melt is poured into the cavity prepared in this way, plastic particles being introduced again into the venting system of the casting mold during or towards the end of the pouring process.
dienende Substanzen in vorzugsweise fein verteilter Form enthalten.According to a further feature of the invention, the foam particles
Alloy components, master alloys or the metallurgical treatment of the melt
containing serving substances in preferably finely divided form.
It has already become known from gas that is practically residue-free
To use synthetic resin foam existing moldings as lost models. ]Further
It has been suggested that the foam of such models may be used for metallurgical purposes
Treatment of the melt to add serving substances. With these proposed measures
However, the disadvantages mentioned at the outset cannot be eliminated, those when pouring
occur in molds or casting molds provided with cavities in the usual way.
A molded piece made of synthetic resin foam used as a model is known to be almost immediately destroyed and gasified by the metal cast on it. Tests have now shown that despite the presence of liquid metal in a mold cavity, plastics can remain undestroyed for some time even in the foamed state if the plastic or foam consists of individual, non-interconnected parts or particles. This surprising result is probably explained by the fact that these particles "float" on the melt, especially if their layer is thicker . H.' The particles closest to the melt decompose and the gases that are split off not only form the desired protective gas atmosphere, but also keep the particles above them in suspension for some time, like the Leidenfrost phenomenon, until they are also decomposed by the thermal radiation of the melt. If, according to the method of the invention, a mold cavity is filled with plastic or, better still, foam particles before casting, these break down more or less quickly into gases and carbon when the metal is poured, both of which are in the mold cavity with the tunnels, including the atmospheric oxygen respond in the desired way. The disintegration of the foam in this case runs more rapidly, the smaller they are. The character of a combustion predominates, i.e. That is, a lot of gas but little carbon is formed. In the case of larger foam particles, the disintegration that occurs under the influence of thermal radiation is considerably slower. Here the character of pyrolysis predominates, i. that is, less gas and more carbon are formed. By a suitable choice of the grain sizes, according to the lesson of the invention, it is now in hand to adapt the rate of decomposition and the ratio of the formation of gases and carbon to the respective working conditions in such a way that the above-mentioned goal is achieved.
Zieht man dazu
In certain cases it can be beneficial to use the plastic or foam particles
not or not only in the mold cavity or the mold, but (also) in the pouring system
to arrange, from where they are partly carried away into the mold. Next to
A saving in foam can be used to quickly displace the air in the
Reach mold cavity. In the case of slow pouring, it may sometimes be desirable
to increase the "service life" of the plastic particles in the mold. If you pull to it
coarsely grained or optionally cube-shaped or plate-shaped plastic particles
approaches, the carbon deposition increases at the same time. If that is not what you want
is, you can instead during the casting through the ventilation system of the
Refill the mold with more fine plastic particles. Finally, sprue
or increasing systems of the Geigen casting mold
covered in order to slow down their cooling.
If a metallurgical treatment of the melt to be poured is required,
the procedure already proposed, corresponding known additives
to be introduced into the foam of a lost model, even in the case of the maneuver
Apply the invention by using plastic or foam particles that
contain such additives. In a known manner you will z. B. in the casting
of silicon / aluminum alloys, sodium or phosphorus additives and iron / carbon melts

In this way, cast iron with spheroidal graphite or lamellar graphite is obtained particularly easily
and the like, without the inevitable losses in the previously used processes

The often strong reaction of additives or alloys, such as magnesium,
Sodium and the like, with the oxygen in the air and their accompanying phenomena, such as eruptions

made of essentially residue-free combustible plastics, wi & 'z. B. polystyrene,
Polyethylene, etc. They can be open-cell or, better, closed-cell. Normally
the blowing agent used for foaming becomes after some storage time due to diffusion
largely replaced by air. For cases where particularly sensitive to oxygen
Melts are to be poured off, you can according to the invention at least a portion
Use foam, the cells of which with an inert gas such as nitrogen and the like.,

to use such foams in a fresh, albeit dry, state. At z.
B. cells filled with nitrogen are produced by the thermal decomposition of the foams
