Description
B. die Sammelwerke »Polyesters and their Applications« (J. Bjorksten et al, Reinhold Publishing Corporation, New York, 1956) oder »Polyester Resins« (J. R. Lawrence, Reinhold Publishing Corporation, New York, 1960).Manufacture of molded parts from polyester molding compounds, the compounds containing carbonyl groups It is known that from (a) unsaturated polyesters the, bonded like esters, residues of polyhydric alcohols and residues of polybasic carboxylic acids contain, with at least some of the radicals via an ethylenically unsaturated, polymerizable group must have, and (b) unsaturated, partially polymerizable monomeric compounds to produce polymerizable (curable) mixtures. About such and similar mixtures known under the name "polyester molding compounds" an extensive literature, z. B. the compilations "Polyesters and their Applications" (J. Bjorksten et al, Reinhold Publishing Corporation, New York, 1956) or “Polyester Resins "(J. R. Lawrence, Reinhold Publishing Corporation, New York, 1960).
Since polyester molding compounds became known, it has been customary to use their Initiate polymerization (hardening) by adding organic peroxides.
It is also known that initiated by organic peroxides To activate polymerization by the addition of certain substances, so that they can, for. B. can take place at room temperature and without external heat supply. As polymerization activators, which are to be used in addition to organic peroxides come of three types Compounds in consideration: a) Nitrogen-containing compounds, especially those with Amino groups, b) metal salts of carboxylic acids, especially cobalt or manganese salts, and c) l-carbonyl-2,3-enediols or 1,4-dicarbonyl-2,3-enediols, especially those with the skeleton of oxytetronic acid or oxymaleic or oxyfumaric acid.
Each of the three types of polymerization activators still adhere certain Defects in: The compounds activated with nitrogenous compounds usually deliver Products that are darkened or darken when exposed to light. When using cobalt or activators containing manganese, the masses are colored in the course of their hardening in many cases undesirably dirty green to gray-brown. The l-carbonyl-2,3-enediols and 1, 4-dicarbonyl-2,3-enediols are, on the one hand, in polyester molding compositions only sparingly soluble and, on the other hand, have the property of being easily oxidizable or to form colored addition compounds with metals, especially iron. This not only makes the handling of such activators more difficult, but also makes it more difficult exists in particular in the case of masses that have been produced in steel equipment, the risk of unwanted discoloration.
While it is now sometimes possible to ester molding compounds already To mix in polymerization activators in the course of their production, the additive must the peroxides are made by the processor of the masses shortly before their use, as this occurs in the presence of peroxides even in the presence of the usual polymerization inhibitors begin to polymerize relatively quickly. By the need to deal with the chemically and to deal with physiologically not harmless peroxides, arises in particular there is a risk of explosions or physiological damage for the processor. Man has therefore already proposed the polymerization of polyester molding compounds by unstable nitrogen compounds that decompose into radicals or active rays trigger. Since, on the one hand, this creates either free nitrogen, which is too leads to vesicular products, or, on the other hand, an extensive outlay in terms of equipment is necessary and the possibility of physiological damage can also hardly be ruled out is, these types of polymerization initiation have not established themselves in practice can.
The invention relates to a process for producing molded parts by curing molding compositions which contain unsaturated polyesters, unsaturated polymerizable monomeric compounds, compounds containing carbonyl groups and, if appropriate, organic peroxides. According to the invention, the process is characterized in that masses are cured which contain 0.1 to 5 percent by weight of aliphatic a-oxyketones or a-oxyaldehydes of the general formula - in which R1 and R2 are identical or different and represent hydrogen or aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals with 1 to 4 carbon atoms -contain.
The α-oxyketones and α-oxyaldehydes to be used according to the invention are characterized by the following properties: They are anti-oxidative Influences relatively insensitive, physiologically generally harmless and usually readily soluble in polyester molding compounds. They also allow hardening of Polyester molding compounds without the use of peroxides, without the formation of troublesome by-products and without the risk of discoloration.
Such α-oxyketones or α-oxyaldehydes have proven to be particularly suitable proved, in the general formula given above, R1 for hydrogen or preferably the methyl group and R2 also for the methyl group or preferably stand for hydrogen, so in particular oxyacetone, furthermore acetoin and glycolaldehyde and finally 2-oxypropanal.
From US Pat. No. 2894849 it is known to harden Molding or coating compounds that contain polyesters modified with drying oils, through the joint use of metal siccatives and certain α-halogen-ß, 8-diketones to accelerate. As can be seen from the patent, these effect α-halogen-B, α-diketones in the absence of metal siccatives, however, no acceleration of hardening.
Polyester molding compounds are known from US Pat. No. 2,890,193, which contain certain aromatic or aliphatic-aromatic a-oxy-ß, p'-diketones. As can be seen from the patent, however, these α-oxy-B, 8'-diketones do not work as polymerization initiators.
The α-oxyketones and α-oxyaldehydes to be used according to the invention (hereinafter referred to as "a-Ocycarbonylverbindungen" for short) can be individually or use mixed together as polymerization initiators. To do this will be them in substance or solution, e.g. B. in N-methylpyrrolidone, in the usual way brought the polyester molding compositions into contact, e.g. B. by mixing. The too The amounts of the a-oxycarbonyl compounds to be used depend essentially on the type of polyester molding compositions to be cured, the curing temperature and the desired Hardening process; they are used for highly reactive masses, large compact molded parts, relatively high temperature and slower curing can usually be chosen to be smaller than with weakly reactive resins, small or flat structures, relatively lower Temperature and rapid curing. For curing 1000 parts by weight of polyester molding compound are 1 to 50, preferably 3 to 30 parts by weight of the α-oxycarbonyl compounds necessary. With the proposed a-oxycarbonyl compounds, it is possible that Polymerization can already be initiated at temperatures around 20 ° C. This is particularly important in the production of large molded parts it is advantageous that these polymerization initiators allow a low exothermic curing process, so that tension-free polymers are available. In practice, good results are often still obtained, though one cures at elevated temperatures, for example in the range between 40 and 180 "C and preferably between 60 and 140 "C, or if you start at about 15 to 25" C and then polymerized at higher temperatures.
The proposed a-oxycarbonyl compounds can be used together Use with the usual peroxides for curing polyester molding compounds.
In many cases there is a synergistic interaction between the a-oxycarbonyl compounds and the peroxides or an activating one Observe the effect of the a-oxycarbonyl compounds on the peroxides. This effect generally occurs both with peroxides that contain hydroperoxy groups, as well as peroxides that contain peroxy groups of other types.
Suitable for use with the α-oxycarbonyl compounds z. B. in particular the organic hydroperoxides under the names "Cyclohexanone peroxide", "methyl ethyl ketone peroxide" and "methyl i-butyl ketone peroxide" are known, as well as cumene hydroperoxide and tert-butyl hydroperoxide. Also with Peroxides of other types can also be used with good success, e.g. B. Benzoyl, acetyl, Acetylbenzoyl, succinyl and phthalyl peroxide. The peroxides can be mixed with one another and, if necessary, be used in a phlegmatized form.
For curing 1000 parts by weight of polyester molding compound can the peroxides generally in the usual amounts, that is from about 0.1 to 50 parts by weight, preferably in amounts of about 1 to 20 parts by weight, in addition to the α-oxycarbonyl compounds use. The amount of the α-oxycarbonyl compounds in this case is mostly appropriate likewise between 0.1 to 50, preferably between 1 to 20 parts by weight.
The weight ratio of peroxide to α-oxycarbonyl compound should generally between about 10: 1 and 1:10, preferably between about 2: 1 and 1: 8. For very reactive masses and the production of larger molded parts is usually recommended with relatively small amounts of peroxide and α-oxycarbonyl compound to work.
When using a-oxycarbonyl compound and peroxide together polyester molding compounds can also be cured at temperatures around 20 "C. A Hardening or post-hardening (tempering) at higher temperatures is not necessary here, but is recommended z. B. when products are desired, the relatively short Should be fully cured time after the start of polymerization.
It is possible in addition to the α-oxycarbonyl compounds and peroxides to initiate the polymerization additionally to use other substances that are known as activators in peroxide-initiated polymerization, e.g. B. amines, cobalt salts or carbonyl-enediols. However, such a way of working is only beneficial in special cases.
For the production of molded parts by the method according to the invention can be used using all otherwise customary methods and aids will. In this way, z. B. castings, compacts, fiber-reinforced Manufacture panels, impregnations and bonds.
