In manchen Fällen findet ohne Komplexbildner gar keine Polymerisation statt, während sie in Gegenwart von Komplexbildnern mit beachtlicher Geschwindigkeit und fast 100%igem Umsatz abläuft. Geeignete Komplexbildner sind z. B. die unter der Handelsbezeichnung »Trilone« bekannten Verbindungen, wie Nitrolotriessigsäure, Äthylendiamintetraessigsäure, 1 ^-Diaminocyclohexan-tetraessigsäure, N-Oxäthyläthylendiamin-triessigsäure, aber auch andere Verbindungen, die in dei Lage sind, Schwermetalle komplex zu binden, z. B. Pyrophosphate, Cyanide und Fluoride. Der Komplexbildner wird zweckmäßig in einer dem eingesetzten Metallsalz äquivalenten Menge angewandt, d. h. in einer solchen Menge, daß das ganze Metallsalz in komplexer Form vorliegt. Jedoch ist auch der Einsatz größerer oder kleinerer Mengen Komplexbildnei möglich. Geeignete Salze von Metallen der Nebengruppen des Periodensystems der Elemente sind beispielsweise Salze des Eisens, Kobalts, Nickels, Kupfers, Mangans, Silbers, Chroms, Cers. Sie werden in Mengen von 0,001 bis 5 %, bezogen auf die eingesetzte Menge des Monomeren, zweckmäßig in Mengen von 0,05 bis 0,4%, eingesetzt.This process has the advantage that the polymerization proceeds much more rapidly than without the addition a complexing agent.
