In the large-scale electrolysis of aqueous alkali halide, essentially sodium chloride, solutions a chlorine gas is obtained that contains a whole range of impurities. Besides water if the gas contains inorganic chlorine compounds, such as B. sodium chloride, and organic chlorine compounds, such as chlorinated hydrocarbons, which are produced from the electrode graphite and from organic impregnation and sealants. Up to now, this raw chlorine gas has been cleaned by cooling, to remove the condensable impurities, and by filtration to remove the solids Remove shares. This cleaning procedure is relatively complex and its success sometimes unsatisfactory.

A theoretically possible electrofiltration could not be carried out in practice, as it was not economical portable material for the spray electrodes was available.

The invention relates to an electrostatic precipitator for the purification of aqueous electrolysis Alkali halide solutions resulting chlorine gas, which is characterized in that the spray electrodes consist of thin wires, the surface of which is made of titanium. As spray electrodes are used primarily Line uses pure titanium wires with a diameter of the order of about 0.5 to 3 mm; however, wires made of other metals that are coated with titanium can also be used are. In long-term tests, the titanium metal showed sufficient results when used as a spray electrode construction material high resistance in raw electrolyte chlorine. Albeit the resistance of titanium to wet chlorine gas was known under normal conditions, it could not be derived from it in any way concluded that it would also be suitable for cleaning crude electrolyte chlorine. As above As already mentioned, crude chlorine contains, in addition to water, a number of inorganic and organic substances Chlorine compounds whose behavior in the ion current could not be foreseen. Next is created in the area of the spray electrode highly ionized chlorine by impact ionization, the chlorine molecules also in atomic chlorine can be split, the reactivity of which is much greater than that of the molecular chlorine. It should also be taken into account that local heating caused by uneven Distribution and high concentration of the ion current in individual glow points on the metal surface occur, the risk of corrosion is increased.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the collecting electrodes used are those the surface of which is made of glass or ceramic materials. The electrodes can be in the form of plates and the like, but also in the form of fibers, e.g. B. tissues are used.

It is known per se, collecting electrodes for electrostatic precipitators in the manner indicated above to train.

In the case of an electrostatic precipitator with the features of the invention, it has proven to be a particular advantage that the liquids that are separated from the electrolyte chlorine on the collecting electrodes, have a high electrical conductivity, so that an additional moistening of the surfaces of the Precipitation electrodes is not required.
