Abstract

Each spoke is under tension and has a male thread (7) at its outer end engaging a female thread (4) in a sleeve forming the lower part of the nipple (3). A square portion (5) at the bottom allows a spanner to be used to tighten the nipple. The nipple has an enlarged head (12) with an arcuate underside forming a flange (13) engaging an arcuate surface (11) on a projection with parallel walls (10) formed by inward deformation (9) of the inside surface (8) of the wheel rim (1). The hole (2) for the spoke and nipple is off-center so that the spoke may be at an angle to the plane of the wheel.
