A stationary exercise machine that straddles another area Can simulate movement, including skiing, walking, jogging, running and mountaineering, is under the EFX Elliptical Fitness Crosstraining® brand and is available from Precor Incorporated of Bothell, Washington. Some embodiments of Elliptical Fitness Crosstraining® machines are in the U.S. Patent No. 6,146,313, which is expressly incorporated by reference is included here.
Briefly, referring to FIG. 1, an Elliptical Fitness Crosstraining® device includes a floor engaging frame 10 that includes a front support 12 . A pair of flywheels 14 a and 14 b (which overlap each other and therefore only flywheel 14 a is shown) are located on the rear part of the frame 10 for rotation about a horizontal transverse axis 16 . The rear ends of ankles 18 a and 18 b are pivotally attached to corresponding flywheels 14 a and 14 b to move back and forth about a circular path about axis 16 when the flywheels rotate. The front ends of the ankles 18 a and 18 b are movably attached to an adjustable guide 20 . The front ends of the ankles 18 a and 18 b are adapted to run along the guide 20 to move back and forth along there when the rear ends of the ankles 18 a and 18 b rotate about axis 16 , which causes foot pedals (or footrests) 22 a and 22 b carried by the ankles to reciprocate along different elliptical paths. In particular, FIG. 1 shows the movement path of the foot pedal with three different angular orientations of the guide 20 , which correspond to different elevations of a lift system 24 . The corresponding foot pedal movement path 26 is shown in the smallest angular orientation (approximately 10 ° above the horizontal). This generally corresponds to a sliding or cross-country skiing movement. The guide 20 is shown in a second orientation at a steeper angle, approximately 20 ° from the horizontal, with the corresponding foot pedal movement path 28 . This movement path generally corresponds to a walking movement. Fig. 1 also illustrates a third even steeper angular orientation of the guide 20, approximately 30 ° from the horizontal, with the corresponding Fußpedalbewegungspfad 30. This movement path generally corresponds to a mountain climbing movement. In addition or as an alternative to changing the angular orientation of the guide 20 , changing the increase in the guide 20 relative to the frame 10 will also result in the movement path of the foot pedal changing. The Elliptical Fitness Crosstraining® device of this type can be connected to a standard amperage AC power supply.

Since the lift system goes through both the generator as well as the battery is supplied with energy Actuation of the lift system during the resistance to pedaling the footrest the user's training.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, that Device configured to allow the battery to power the device for a predetermined Power period of time even after the user pedaling stops.
As will be apparent to those skilled in the art, the use of a battery, to operate an actuator (e.g. a lift system) of a fitness device, so to maintain a substantially constant resistance for the user different types of fitness equipment are applied and it is not on an Elliptical Fitness Crosstraining® device is limited.

3 is a block diagram Fig., Which electrical components of the battery-powered Elliptical Fitness Crosstraining® device is formed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 2, in accordance with the present invention, a battery powered fitness device to simulate various types of striding movements includes a frame 10 , a guide 20 movably associated with the frame, and a pair of foot pedals (footrests) 22 a and 22 b, which are worn by elongated ankles 18 a and 18 b. The front ends of the ankles 18 a and 18 b are movably supported by the guide 20 . The device further includes a lift system 24 (contained in a front hood 25 ) for selectively and automatically changing at least one of the elevation and / or the angular orientation of the guide 20 relative to the frame 10 . Thus, the user can easily adjust the guidance to simulate a wide range of walking movements. These components are generally equivalent to those disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 6,146,313, which is referred to in the background section above.
With additional reference to FIG. 3, the battery-powered fitness machine includes in accordance with the present invention, even further a generator 32, an (in a rear hood 34) can be driven with the first and second ankle joints 18 a and b is coupled 18. The generator 32 is driven to generate energy by the striding movements of the user when the user's feet are in the first and second foot pedals 22 a and 22 b. In one embodiment, generator 32 is configured as a 3-phase AC generator that includes a DC permanent magnet alternator that generates a sinusoidal voltage proportional to its rotational speed (RPM). In order to drive the generator 32 by the striding movements of the user, the generator is drivably coupled to the flywheels 14 a and 14 b, which are coupled to the ankles 18 a and 18 b (see FIG. 1), using any suitable transmission means , such as a shaft, chain, gear, or belt (not shown). The generator 32 is designed to generate voltage even when a user is pedaling at very low speeds. Resistance to the pedals for the user is controlled by a resistance controller 36 based on the amount of current requested by generator 32 , ie the more current requested by generator 32 , the higher the torque level required to to power the generator 32 , and the higher the resistance on the pedals. For example, this can be accomplished by a CPU / microprocessor 60 which determines the amount of current required by generator 32 and sending a corresponding command signal to resistance controller 36 . Resistor controller 36 responds by sending a corresponding field current signal (e.g., a pulse width modulated signal) to generator 32 . Changes in the field current signal change the field current in the alternator in generator 32 , ie an increase in current in the alternator field leads to an increase in the force of its magnetic field, thereby increasing the resistance of the alternator to the user; and decreasing a current in the alternator field results in a decrease in the force of its magnetic field, thereby reducing resistance of the alternator to the user. The field current signal can be changed by programming the user to notify the user of a desired resistance level. The voltage generated by generator 32 is used to power various components of the battery powered fitness device, as will be described in more detail below.
This arrangement would readily require that whenever significantly more power is required from generator 32 for purposes of actuating guide 20 in this example, the resistance on the pedals for the user will be increased. This is undesirable if the user wishes to continue exercising while maintaining a substantially more constant resistance to his / her striding movements.
Accordingly, still referring to FIG. 3, the present invention provides a rearrangement of a battery 48 to actuate the lift system 24 to move the guide 20 up and down so as to provide resistance to the user substantially during exercise to keep constant regardless of whether the guide 20 is operated or not. In particular, according to the present invention, the voltage from the generator 32 is rectified to a DC voltage and converted via an AC-DC converter 38 which will then power a universal power supply 40 . The universal power supply 40 will produce an isolated power supply 42 (e.g. 18 V) and a non-isolated power supply 42 (e.g. 12 V). For safety purposes, the 18 V isolated power supply 42 is connected to a digital ground, which is isolated from the non-isolated power supply 44 , which is connected to an analog ground, to fully isolate these components, which isolate the user from any circuitry directly connected to the alternator 32 can be powered (see "Isolation Barrier" line in Fig. 3). The non-isolated power supply 44 is used to operate the resistance controller 36 .
In one embodiment, the 18 V isolated power supply 42 is then converted to 14.5 V for a battery charger 46 to charge the battery 48 , which will be used to power the DC guide lift motor (actuator) 24 to guide 20 high and move down, under the control of an elevator control 52 . Any type of electrical energy storage medium can be used in place of a conventional battery, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art. The isolated power supply 42 is also converted to 8 V via a DC-DC converter 54 to power a display panel 56 of the fitness device. (See also Figure 2.) As is known in the art, the display 56 includes one or more display screens and a command console composed of a number of push-buttons. The display screens are used to present various information that is useful to the user, while the command console is used to allow the user to activate or program the device. The 8 V from the DC-DC converter 54 are further converted to 5 V via a linear regulator 58 for power supply to a CPU and other peripheral devices 60 . The CPU 60 coordinates the operation of the lift control 52 , the upper display 56 and the resistance control 36 .
It is important, since the battery 48 is used around the guide 20 supply power to that actuation of the guide 20 does not change in the resistance on the pedals 22 a, and generates b 22, which is sensed by the user (except, when the user's programming changes the current required by generator 32 ). The normal guidance duty cycle is typically 16.6%, which means that for every minute that guidance 20 is actuated ("on") there will be 5 minutes where guidance 20 is not actuated ("off") , Accordingly, the battery 48 is configured to be charged during the "off" cycle and then during the "on" cycle, the 14.5 V from the battery charger 46 provides some of the power to operate the guide 20 while the Battery 48 will provide the rest. Consequently, the entire system is powered while the user is pedaling using only the energy that will be provided by the user and the resistance on the pedals will not change even if the guide 20 is operated. Furthermore, the battery 48 can be used to power the guide 20 and also keep the CPU 60 and display panel 56 running for up to 20-30 seconds after the user stops pedaling.
