Description
Process for the production of refractory bodies from a pre-fired Mullite molding compound It is already a process for the production of refractory bodies known from a pre-fired mullite molding compound, in which this molding compound is comminuted and mixed with a finely divided binder of the same composition, is shaped and fired. Mullist is formed when a mixture of aluminum oxide and silica is heated to a certain temperature. The percentage of the mullites produced depends on how close the ratio of aluminum oxide is and silica is the theoretical mullite ratio. The one when burning aluminum oxide and silica to produce mullite are difficult that if the starting materials contain impurities, not all of them Silicic acid reacts with aluminum oxide, that rather a part of the silicic acid under Formation of glass reacts with impurities. The presence of this glass in a fired, refractory form which otherwise contains pure mullite crystals gives these crystals the opportunity to slide together, causing destruction which leads to molds at high temperatures. If you use pure raw materials as starting materials Aluminum oxide and pure silica in a mullite ratio, then this disadvantage occurs not, however, such pure starting materials are disproportionate expensive.
The invention is based on the object mentioned, when using of contaminated starting materials avoid. This is done according to the invention in such a way that the bauxite and kaolin existing starting mixture for the multi-molding compound, the impurities of more contains more than 1%, with an over the theoretical mullite ratio (720 / a A1203, 28% Si02), a slight excess of A1203, namely 73 to 77%., Melted, the melt mass obtained is crushed after solidification and after thorough mixing with a proportion of a binder made from finely comminuted material corresponding to the mullite Aluminum oxide and raw clay is shaped and fired.
A refractory body obtained by this method is in spite of this the contaminated raw material is pure mullite; the glass formation that occurs in the known, produced from relatively cheap and impure raw materials Mullite bodies arises, is eliminated, because the excess of aluminum oxide on the other hand the theoretical percentage of mullite causes the alumina. with the whole Silica reacts and not silica reacts with any impurities remains free.
It is already known that the best porcelain is obtained when the Excess alumina exceeds the molecular ratio of alumina to silica in the mullite, d. H. is greater than 3: 2. The high-alumina, pre-formed mixture is here with the addition of lithium or lithium compounds, optionally together with other fluxes, melted. However, this procedure serves; as already mentioned, the production of raw materials for ceramic masses (porcelain) and not the production of refractory forms according to the present invention. It is therefore missing in this known method also those peculiar to the method according to the invention further process steps, namely the comminution of the melt mass obtained after stiffening and mixing with a ratio corresponding to the mulite Part of a binding agent made from the finest crushed aluminum oxide and raw clay. the There is no need to add fluxes, such as lithium, in the process according to the invention.
It is also known to heat bauxite and kaolin to 1650 ° C, where the composition corresponding to the formula A1203 - S'02 for the purpose of increasing the Fire resistance changed as required by increasing the proportion of alumina can be. This burnt mass is crushed again and with a binder of the same composition mixed, shaped and vitrified burned.
This known process lacks the melting process step. Mullite crystals have their greatest mobility and the greatest growth speed, when the starting material is in a molten state. Compared to the mere firing up to 1650 ° C gives the advantage that the growth of the crystals is facilitated and that a fully developed structure of federated Mullite crystals without a glassy phase are formed.
In one embodiment of the invention, an intimate mixture of Raw bauxite with a high alumina content, for example Dutch guiana bauxite, and from powdered raw kaolin, for example Georgia or Florida kaolin, in a ratio that is a slight excess of the alumina over the theoretical Having mullite composition in the final product, calcined in a rotary kiln, up to a temperature sufficient to drive off the unbound water.

A typical raw shell @ ändisch-guayana-bauxite has the following chemical analysis: A12 03. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 61.26% Si 02. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.851 / o fee 03. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.420 / 0 Ti 02. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.550 / 0 burn loss . . . . . . . . . . . . 31.930 / 0 H2 O. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2,000 / 0 Raw Georgia Kaolin has approximately the following chemical analysis: A12 03. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 38.5 0/0 Si O,. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 44.8% fee 03 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.60 / 0 Ti 02. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.80 / 0 burning loss. . . . . . . . . . . . . 14.3% raw bauxite and raw kaolin are used in a ratio which leads to a molding compound which has an alumina content of 73 to 77 percent by weight, preferably 75 percent by weight. Under these conditions the silica content is 18 to 22, preferably 20, percent by weight. These two starting materials are dry mixed with one another in a spiral conveyor; the mixture enters a mixing drum, in which a stiff dough is produced by adding a sufficient amount of water; this is expelled through a mouthpiece and cut into lumps of suitable size (e.g. 8.6-7.7 cm); the lumps are placed in a kiln. The lumps are expediently preheated to a uniform temperature that is as high as possible, ie to a temperature which is still below the tapping temperature (1648 ° C.); They are then placed in an electric furnace, where they are melted by increasing the temperature of the material above the melting point (1871 to 1926 ° C). The electric furnace is tapped into a mold or molds periodically; The mass is allowed to cool slowly in the molds by the action of air. The solidified ingot is then crushed, preferably to a grain size that will allow the grains to pass through a 4.699 mm screen. But you can also produce a mullite mass of such a grain size that it passes through narrower screens. For very thin cross-sections, the mass will be ringed to the degree of fineness of a sieve with an opening width of 0.833 mm and even finer.
With a slight excess of the alumina over the theoretical mullite ratio 72% will minimize the possibility of the presence of free silica decreased; this causes the formation of a liquid phase during the subsequent Avoid burning the molds. Excess clay shows up in the form isolated pieces of corundum crystals.
It has been found that when using a molten mass of mullite, which is more than 1.5 percent by weight Impurities in the form of iron and titanium, and has the chemical composition given above, the The degree of fineness of the alumina-silica binder is of decisive importance is in terms of achieving the desired heat resistance and resistance against splinters. If the mullite mass described is used, it is a binder from finely divided pure clay and powdered raw kaolin in the theoretical Mullite ratio completely sufficient. For example, the alumina is finely distributed To understand an alumina with such a degree of Fe: inity that 100% through a sieve go from 0.147 mm opening width and extend over 901 / a in a sieve of 0.043 mm Deposit opening width. The powdered kaolin mixed with water has one Degree of fineness that corresponds, for example, to a sieve with an opening width of 0.043 mm.
