Abstract

Fluorescent microparticles having an average particle diameter of 5-100 nm comprise a core of a fluorescent material coated with a metallic conductive material with a further transparent protective layer and an optional additional layer comprising functional groups or conjugate molecules that enable coupling to biomolecules or other analyte substances. Fluorescent microparticles (I) having an average particle diameter of 5-100 nm are characterized in that: (i) the particles comprise a core of a fluorescent material coated with a metallic conductive material (II) that stimulates the optical frequency and fluorescence such that the diameter of the core of the fluorescent material as well as the type and layer thickness of the metallic conductive material are formulated with respect to each other so that the maximum photostability and/or brightness is achieved by single- and/or multi-photon excitation; (ii) the particles are coated with a further transparent protective layer (III); and (iii) the particles optionally comprise functional groups or conjugate molecules (IV) that enable coupling to biomolecules or other analyte substances. An independent claim is included for the production of the microparticles (I) comprising: (A) preparation of the polymer particles that contain fluorescent organic dye or fluorescent semiconductor crystals having an average particle size of 5-100 nm; (B) coating the fluorescent particles from (A) with a metallic conductive material (II); and (C) coating the metalized particles with a protective transparent layer with an optional further coating (IV).
