Description
Knowing the crystallization point is process engineering in many Processes, e.g. B. the thermal separation process, of great importance in which z. B. a separation of different components via the crystallization process is made possible. In addition, in the case of water-containing samples, knowledge of the Point of crystallization about fundamental thermodynamic relationships of the Determinable water content. This is for products where the presence of Water is viewed as a contaminant, very often a quality determinant Parameter. Food and luxury goods, products of the pharmaceutical and chemical industries as well as petrochemicals. specially mineral oils and fuels are representative of the latter two groups and working materials of refrigeration and air conditioning technology. So airplane fuels contain only the smallest amounts of water, otherwise there is a risk of Icing of the fuel lines. Small amounts of water in the brake fluid of motor vehicles can be caused by high temperatures Steam bubbles cause the brake system to fail.
Currently has refrigeration and air conditioning technology for alternative materials successfully demonstrated the suitability of the patented procedure knowledge and control of water content could be great technical Importance. So too high a moisture content, which in the production of Replacement refrigerants according to DIN 8960 a limit of 25 mg water per 1 kg Refrigerant must not exceed, to freeze the control elements of the Refrigeration system and lead to corrosion (H. Buchwald, J. Hellmann, H. König, C. Meurer, SOLKANE® paperback refrigeration and air conditioning, Solvay Fluor & Derivate GmbH, Hanover 1997). Since between production and end use of Refrigerants hardly reduce the quality of the water content is to be avoided, the manufacturer himself usually makes a much higher one Quality standard aimed for than by the above limit required. There is therefore an essential requirement for a suitable one Analytical method for determining the water content in alternative refrigerants in the detection of impurities in the ppm range. In addition to the claim high sensitivity, as with many other products, Products or in particular in process engineering processes themselves, a quick one and cost-effective determination of the water content.
Moisture measurement in liquids prepares in comparison to gas moisture measurement experimentally much greater difficulties, so that here no general valid measuring methods must be specified. To determine the moisture of Liquids existing conventional measurement methods can be found in Essentially on the principle of the distillation process, the capacitive and Conductivity measurement method or the chemical known from Karl Fischer Process. A newer method of determining water content of liquids is the microwave moisture measurement, in which the Change in frequency and attenuation of the emitted or reflected micro wave radiation compared to the pure, water-free test substance is analyzed. Applicable in the area of trace moisture, but generally extremely elaborate measuring methods are gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy.
Of the different conventional measuring methods for determining the The Karl Fischer titration provides water content of liquids as part of the Quality assurance in many routine or company laboratories is the most important water determination method. The basic principle of the Karl Fischer method is based on the implementation of water with iodine and sulfur dioxide according to the Bunsen equation. In experimental practice there are two basic ones Procedures for dosing the titrant iodine prevailed. The one is based on the volumetric dosing of a methanolic iodine solution into the Karl Fischer reagent (E. Scholz, Karl Fischer titration, Springer Verlag, Berlin - Heidelberg - New York, 1984). The other approach, also coulometric Titration called (M. Hahn, Modern coulometric analysis - methods for separation and enrichment, Encyclopedia of Analytical Science, Academic Press, London, 1995, S. 901-909), is based on the electrochemical generation of the for the determination of the water content required iodine directly in the Karl Fischer reagent. at Both approaches ultimately become the color change point of the sample determined either visually or with suitable optical measurement methods.
In contrast to the procedure proposed in the context of this invention the Karl Fischer method, which is the most important method, is limited to transparent to almost clear liquids. Compared to the latter the patented procedure described below has the further advantage that no reagent or titration agent for analyzing the moisture or water content is needed. The patented procedure is therefore not only suitable for accurate analysis of water content on a laboratory scale, but also for direct Application in process engineering processes.
The invention relates to a measuring method by means of which the water content of liquids can be detected with a high degree of sensitivity and accuracy. The patented method is based on the optical determination of the crystallization point of the water in the liquid while measuring the sample temperature. Using fundamental thermodynamic laws that provide a clear connection between the crystallization temperature and the moisture content of the liquid, it is in principle possible to determine the water content without the need for calibration. As an alternative to this, the experimentally determined crystallization point can also be assigned to the desired quantity of water content by means of a suitable calibration, the water content in the liquid to be examined being determined by another comparison method. An equation that can be derived from the fundamental thermodynamics and from which the concentration of water x W in the sample under investigation results when the crystallization point of the water in the sample liquid is precisely measured and the crystallization temperature T * is measured simultaneously, is exemplified by Equation 1,

The featured within the scope of this invention for the detection of the crystallization point The striking measuring method represents an optical scattered light method in which light from a suitable lighting source, preferably a laser, a laser diode or also light-emitting diode, directed or radiated onto the sample surface and from it is reflected. Thus, the scattered light method can be used for both transparent and for non-transparent liquids. The incident light is first scattered on the molecules of the liquid surface. After cooling the Test liquid when reaching the crystallization point of a component first crystals of this crystallizing component, which act as Mie scatterers in the Contrary to the molecular Rayleigh scatterers of the liquid one by many Powers of ten produce higher scattered light intensity and because of their high Light intensity an extremely sensitive detection of the start of crystal formation and thus enable the determination of the installation point.
Ausführungsbeispiele für die Erfindung sind in den Abbildungen dargestelltExemplary embodiments of the invention are shown in the figures
Fig. 1 shows an example measurement for an R143a refrigerant sample at temperatures of approx. + 10 ° C and -30 ° C. An identical image section of the liquid phase of the refrigerant is shown, which is located in a thermostated viewing cell under saturation conditions and is irradiated by a light beam from a suitable illumination source - here a laser light. On the left half of the picture, only a scattered light signal can be seen for the refrigerant sample at a temperature of + 10 ° C, which is caused by the molecular Rayleigh scattered light process. On the right half of the picture, however, the scattered light signal to be detected is dominated by the scattering of the laser light on the ice crystals. Since the signal caused by the scattering on the ice crystals is several orders of magnitude stronger than the Rayleigh scattered light signal, even the smallest contamination of the refrigerant sample with water in the ppm range can be detected with this method.
Fig. 2 shows an embodiment of a device for detecting the water content with the aid of the proposed optical scattered light method. For excitation of scattered light, a laser diode is preferably not necessarily used here, the light of which is supplied directly or via optical components or also by means of optical fibers (fibers) arrives at the optically accessible test vehicle and irradiates the liquid or its surface therein. The light scattered on the molecules or crystals is detected at an arbitrary angle with respect to the direction of incidence of the illumination source, here in a backscatter arrangement, the detection direction being determined by diaphragms or fibers. In this arrangement, the overall optical system is to be adjusted in such a way that the point of intersection of the incident light beam from the illumination source and the direction of detection of scattered light lie at the phase boundary or surface of the liquid to be examined. With the help of the optical scattered light method, the water content can be determined for both transparent and non-transparent liquids. The optical accessibility of the test vehicle is ensured by at least one quartz glass window, irrespective of whether the coupling in of the light from the illumination source and the detection of scattered light is realized by a single type of double ring fiber or conventionally via two separate optical paths. For transparent fluids, the crystallization point and thus the water content can also be detected from the interior of the liquid, so that in addition to the retroreflection arrangement described here, a transmission arrangement can also be used.
Fig. 3 demonstrates an application of the patented procedure. For three different R134a refrigerant samples, the dependence of the crystallization temperature on the water content is shown, which could previously be checked using the Karl Fischer method. The results confirm that the crystallization temperature correlates with the water content and that this can be detected extremely sensitively with the optical scattered light method. The known melting enthalpy and crystallization temperature of the pure sample liquid and water theoretically calculated moisture contents agree very well with the data obtained with the Karl Fischer method.
