Description
The invention relates to a membrane stack for a humidifier of a fuel cell system and a humidifier with such a membrane stack. The invention also relates to a method for producing such a membrane stack.
Die Feuchtigkeit der beiden Gase gleicht sich folglich beim Durchströmen des Membranstapels aneinander an.Conventional membrane stacks for humidifier modules comprise membranes stacked on top of one another, each with a membrane layer which is impermeable to gas and permeable to moisture or water or water vapor. An intermediate space is formed between the individual membrane layers or membranes, through which the gas can flow, ie forms a gas path. Thus, a membrane of the membrane stack constructed in this way can have a gas to be humidified flow over it on one side and a moist gas flow over it on the other side in the humidifier. The two gases are fluidically separated from one another by the membrane layer of the respective membrane. Consequently, there is no material mixing of the two gases flowing through the humidifier and the membrane stack. However, the humidity of the wetter gas can pass through the membrane layer and be absorbed by the drier gas to humidify it. As a result, the humidity of the two gases equalizes as they flow through the membrane stack.
Such humidifiers are often used in fuel cell systems where dry cathode supply air has to be humidified before it is fed to the fuel cell. The cathode supply air must be humidified in order to prevent or at least delay drying out of the polymer electrolyte membranes typically used in a fuel cell. Such drying out, which is to be avoided by means of the humidifier module, has a negative effect in particular on the durability of the polymer electrolyte membranes and the efficiency of the fuel cell.
However, the production of such a membrane stack from membranes with a respective membrane layer proves to be technically complex, since it must also be ensured under operating conditions that a defined intermediate space for the gas to flow through is maintained between the individual membrane layers. In particular, it must be prevented that adjacent membrane layers can move—for example due to pressure fluctuations in the gas conducted through the gaps or gas paths—or even touch one another as a result of such a movement.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to create an improved embodiment for a membrane stack with a plurality of membranes or membrane layers, which takes account of the problems mentioned above. In addition, such an improved membrane stack should be particularly easy to produce.
This object is solved by the subject matter of the independent patent claims. Preferred embodiments are subject matter of the dependent patent claims.
The basic idea of the invention is therefore to stack the membranes of a membrane stack for a humidifier of a fuel cell system on top of one another and to arrange them at a distance from one another by being arranged alternately on a respective spacer element. Said spacer elements are thus arranged between two membranes that are adjacent in the stacking direction. In this case, an intermediate space formed with the aid of a respective spacer element between two adjacent membranes forms a gas path for a gas to flow through, in particular for the gas to be humidified or for the moist gas. According to the invention, said spacer elements are firmly connected on both sides to the two membranes that are adjacent in the stacking direction by means of an adhesive connection. Such a connection can be realized by means of a suitable adhesive layer made of an adhesive or an adhesive tape. This eliminates the folding of the membranes around the spacer element, which is usual in conventional membrane stacks. At the same time, a fluid-tight delimitation of the intermediate space or gas path is realized by means of the spacer element glued to the membranes. The result is a membrane stack that is technically simple in construction and therefore also inexpensive to produce.
Specifically, the membrane stack according to the invention comprises a plurality of, ie at least three, gas-permeable and moisture-permeable membranes stacked one on top of the other at a distance along a stacking direction. A spacer element is arranged between each two membranes which are adjacent in the stacking direction and which is attached to these supported by both membranes. The spacer elements each have a wave-shaped support structure which extends perpendicularly to the stacking direction along a direction of extent and forms a gas path through which a gas can flow along the direction of extent. The gas can in particular be the moist gas or gas to be humidified mentioned above. The spacer elements are firmly bonded on both sides by means of an adhesive bond to the membrane that is adjacent in each case in the stacking direction.
Particularly preferably, the spacer elements can be arranged in intermediate spaces formed between the membranes along the stacking direction, so that the intermediate spaces form a gas path through which a gas can flow in each case. Thus, even in the stacking direction, adjacent gaps or gas paths can each be rotated by 90° with respect to one another and a gas can flow through them.
According to a preferred embodiment, the support structure is arranged between two preferably flat edge sections of the respective spacer element, each of which likewise extends along the extension direction. In this embodiment, the two edge sections of a respective spacer element are firmly connected on both sides by means of the adhesive connection to the membrane that is respectively adjacent in the stacking direction. In this embodiment, two spacer elements that are adjacent in the stacking direction are also arranged rotated through 90° with respect to their direction of extension. This means that first spacer elements and second spacer elements alternate along the stacking direction, with the edge sections of the first spacer elements extending along a first direction of extent that runs orthogonally to a second direction of extent, along which the second edge sections of the second spacer elements extend.
According to another preferred embodiment, those intermediate spaces in which a first spacer element is arranged form a first gas path through which a flow can take place along the first direction of extent. In this embodiment, those gaps in which a second spacer element is arranged form a second gas path through which a flow can take place along the second direction of extent.
First and second gas paths preferably alternate along the first stacking direction. If humid gas is conducted through the first gas paths and gas to be humidified is conducted through the second gas paths or vice versa, moisture can be effectively transferred from the humid gas to the gas to be humidified in this way.
Particularly expediently, the adhesive bonds form a fluid-tight lateral delimitation of a respective gas path. In this way, the provision of separate sealing elements for sealing the gas paths or gaps can be omitted.
Particularly expediently, the edge sections can be designed in the form of strips. In this way it is ensured that there is enough space available for the gas path formed in the area of the support structure along the direction of extent.
At least one adhesive connection is particularly expediently realized by means of an adhesive layer of adhesive or of an adhesive tape. This applies particularly preferably to all existing adhesive bonds. In this way, the membrane stack can be assembled in a particularly simple manner while remaining mechanically stable.
According to an advantageous development, the wave-shaped support structure has a, preferably sinusoidal, geometric shape in profile perpendicular to the direction of extension with a number of maxima and minima. In this development, one of the two membranes that are adjacent in the stacking direction is supported on the maxima. The other of the two membranes that are adjacent in the stacking direction is supported accordingly on the minima. In this way, a stable arrangement of adjacent membranes at a distance from one another is ensured.
According to an advantageous development, the membrane stack has the geometry of a square with two opposite first sides and two opposite second sides or the geometry of a rectangle with two opposite narrow sides and two opposite broad sides in a cross section perpendicular to the axial direction. In this development, the edge sections of both the first and second spacer elements each end in two adjacent corners of the square or rectangle. A membrane stack with such a geometric shape is mechanically particularly stable, requires only little installation space and still allows moisture to be transferred from the moist gas to the gas to be humidified with a high effective cross section.
