Description
The present invention relates to an adhesive composition and a method for gluing flexible foam parts. In addition, the invention relates to the use of an adhesive composition for bonding flexible foam parts.
For the bonding of soft foam parts, such as mattresses, upholstered furniture, passenger seats or the like, water-based adhesive systems have become more and more popular in recent years as a replacement for classic solvent-based systems. The water-based adhesive systems have proven to be particularly advantageous with regard to occupational safety and the reduced risk of fire in production facilities. The water-based systems used today are mainly systems based on the binder polychloroprene, which is used as a polymer dispersion (polymer latex). Such a stable dispersion of chloroprene polymer particles in an aqueous phase is characterized in particular by high wet adhesion, rapid strength build-up and a wide range of substrates (foams, nonwovens, wood and plastics). In order to also be able to ensure a high initial speed and tension adhesion in addition to the properties mentioned, the polychloroprene systems mentioned are generally administered in a spray application process together with an adhesion promoter.
Despite the advantages mentioned, the polychloroprene systems also have disadvantages. Thus, when the polychloroprene dispersions are applied, large quantities of spray mist are often produced, which not only have a negative effect on cleanliness at the workplace, but also represent a source of risk in terms of occupational safety. In particular, the residual content of carcinogenic chloroprene monomers in connection with the inhalative risk of the spray mist used represents a health risk. In addition, there has been a shortage of supply on the world market with regard to the production of polychloroprene dispersions, which leads to significantly higher costs. Although attempts are known from the prior art to replace the polychloroprene binder with other suitable binders, such as polyurethane, the polyurethane polymer dispersions in question have other disadvantages, such as a very short open time, low commercial availability and a substrate-dependent low initial adhesion turned out to be unusable.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to at least partially eliminate the abovementioned disadvantages of known adhesive compositions. In particular, the object of the invention is to provide a versatile adhesive composition for bonding flexible foam parts that is simple and inexpensive to produce, can be processed in a manner that is not harmful to health and has improved adhesive properties, in particular high initial adhesion and a long processing time.
According to the invention, an adhesive composition for gluing flexible foam parts is provided. An adhesive composition according to the invention can be used in particular for bonding flexible foam parts such as mattresses or upholstered furniture. In the context of the invention, a first binder component based on an acrylate polymer can preferably be understood to mean a material which has one or more different acrylate polymers as the main component or as the functional main component. The first binder component can preferably be in the form of an aqueous acrylate polymer dispersion (acrylate polymer latex). In the context of the invention, a second adhesion-promoting component based on a resin compound can preferably be understood to mean a material which has one or more different resin compounds as the main component or as the functional main component. The second adhesion-promoting component can preferably be in the form of a natural resin compound, for example an ester of a natural resin. A third component for stabilizing the adhesive composition can be understood in particular as a component for rheology control or film formation, which preferably prevents the individual components of the adhesive composition from diffusing apart. In this case, the stabilizing component can be designed in particular as an anti-settling agent and ensure a high viscosity or pseudoplasticity of the adhesive composition with low shear rates. Likewise, the stabilizing component can at least also be provided to stabilize the structure of the adhesive composition and, for example, to keep the adhesion-promoting component based on a resin compound within the adhesive composition.
At this point, the following statements should be preceded by the fact that the indication of the respective proportions by weight of a component preferably refers to 100% by weight of the entire adhesive composition and that the person skilled in the art is very well aware of the indication of preferred proportions by weight of the respective components within a mixture Is able to combine the proportions with one another in such a way that the sum of all individual components or the total proportion of all components of the adhesive composition is 100% by weight.
In the context of the present invention, it has surprisingly been recognized that, in particular through the use of a first binder component based on an acrylate polymer in conjunction with an adhesion-promoting component based on a resin compound and a stabilizing component, a substitution of a binder containing chloroprene polymer while retaining all the favorable properties of chloroprene and can be achieved while at the same time ensuring simple and inexpensive production and processing that is not harmful to health.
It has proved to be advantageous if the first binder component is present in the adhesive composition in a proportion of 85 to 95% by weight. A higher proportion of 85 to 95% by weight, preferably 90 to 95% by weight, of the first binder component is advantageous in particular for reasons of improved resistance to environmental influences, above all increased heat resistance and improved aging stability. Improved resistance to aging results here, for example, from a lower tendency to yellowing of the adhesive composition in question with a higher proportion of the first binder component, which is advantageous above all in the case of optically visible adhesive interfaces.
With regard to easy processability and high stability under conditions of use, it can advantageously be provided according to the invention that the acrylate polymer has a glass transition temperature below room temperature, preferably a glass transition temperature between -30.degree. C. and +5.degree. In this case, the glass transition temperature can be determined in particular via a dynamic differential thermal analysis in accordance with DIN 65467. In particular, a temperature of 25° C. can be assumed as room temperature.

Accordingly, the proportion of water in the acrylate polymer dispersion is at most 70% by weight, preferably at most 60% by weight, in particular at most 50% by weight. Furthermore, when the first binder component is implemented in the form of an acrylate polymer dispersion, it has proven to be advantageous if the dispersion has a zeta potential of between −65 mV and −30 mV.
With regard to a simple production of an adhesive composition that can be applied homogeneously, it can also advantageously be provided that the first binder component is in the form of an acrylate polymer dispersion, the acrylate polymer dispersion preferably having a particle size distribution between 50 nm and 500 nm, preferably between 110 nm and 250 nm.
With regard to rapid initial adhesion and a wide range of substrates, it is conceivable according to the invention for the second adhesion-promoting component to be present in the adhesive composition in a proportion of 5 to 30% by weight, preferably in a proportion of 5 to 15% by weight. The adhesion-promoting component according to the invention enables in particular sufficient plastic adhesion.

With regard to a stable and long-lasting structure of an adhesive composition in question, it can also advantageously be provided according to the invention that the third stabilizing component is present in the adhesive composition in a proportion of 0.1 to 1% by weight.
Advantageously, the stabilizing component can be in the form of cellulose, preferably in the form of nanocellulose, with the nanocellulose having an average fiber length and/or an average fiber diameter of between 1 and 1000 nm, preferably between 10 and 500 nm.

With regard to a targeted setting or adaptation of properties of the adhesive composition in question, it is also conceivable that further components are present in the adhesive composition, with a further component in the form of additives, preferably in the form of rheological adjusting agents and/or preservatives and/or colorants is trained. The additives can also be in the form of defoamers, for example based on silicone oil, vegetable oil, white oil or preferably mineral oil. In addition, it is also conceivable that the additives are in the form of fillers, retarders, accelerators, biocides, fungicides, algicides or the like,
In order to ensure the production, processing and application of the adhesive composition in question at common ambient temperatures and not having to take any complex measures to ensure the necessary processing conditions, it can advantageously be provided according to the invention that the adhesive composition has a processing temperature between 0 and + 60 ° C, preferably between + 5 and +40 °C.
With regard to a particularly effective use for bonding foam-like materials, it can further be provided that the adhesive composition has an initial adhesion (in particular according to WPV 119) between 0% opening and 5% opening. Such rapid initial tack is particularly advantageous when bonding materials that are exposed to stress just a short time after the adhesive composition has been applied to the first substrate and a second substrate has been placed on top. For example, the applied adhesive layer can be exposed to the corresponding weight of one of the substrates at an early stage, for example by carrying the substrates bonded to one another.
In order to ensure the most flexible and convenient processing possible from the application of the adhesive composition to the joining of the first and second substrate, it can advantageously be provided that the adhesive composition has an open time of between 1 and 45 minutes, preferably between 5 and 30 minutes. The open time can preferably be determined according to DIN EN 923.
In the context of simple processing, in particular simple and uniform application to a substrate, the adhesive composition can also advantageously have a viscosity of between 10 mPas and 10,000 mPas, preferably between 10 mPas and 5000 mPas. The viscosity can preferably be determined here as a dynamic Brookfield viscosity (in particular at 25° C., measured with
In order to avoid undesired interactions with the substrates to be connected as far as possible, it can also be advantageous if the adhesive composition has a pH of between 4.0 and 10.0, preferably between 5.0 and 9.0. It has been shown that an acidic pH value of < 4 can attack the surface of the substrate, which can damage or discolor the surface. The pH of the adhesive composition can preferably be determined according to DIN 53785.
With regard to a simple and homogeneous application and effective adhesive effect, it can also advantageously be provided that the adhesive composition has a tensiometric surface tension of between 20 and 60 mN/m, preferably between 30 and 50 mN/m. Such a low tensiometric surface tension, which can be determined in particular using a ring method according to Lecomte du Nouy, promises particularly good wettability of the substrate surface with adhesive molecules.
The invention also relates to a method for gluing flexible foam parts, in particular using an adhesive composition described above. The method according to the invention comprises the steps of presenting a first substrate, applying the adhesive composition to the first substrate and placing a second substrate on the first substrate to create a bond between the first and the second substrate. The method according to the invention thus has the same advantages as have already been described in detail in relation to the adhesive composition according to the invention.
With a view to increasing the initial speed and tension adhesion of the adhesive composition according to the invention, it can also advantageously be provided that the adhesive composition is applied in the form of a two-component coagulant spray application method, with mixing preferably being carried out before and/or during the application of the adhesive composition to the first substrate the adhesive composition is carried out with a coagulant to produce a two-component coagulant system. Mixing can preferably take place instantaneously during application, for example within the spray channel or spray jet or within the atomizer air flow.
With regard to particularly effective coagulation, it has also proven to be advantageous if the coagulant is in the form of an organic acid or an aluminum salt.
In order to further increase the initial adhesion, the invention can also provide for the adhesive composition to be applied in the form of an airless application process, with the airless application process preferably taking place at a pressure of 5 to 12 bar, in particular at a pressure of 8 to 12 bar.

The adhesive compositions according to the invention can preferably be prepared by initially introducing the first binder component A based on an acrylate polymer. The first binder component A can preferably be in the form of an acrylate polymer dispersion, which preferably has an acrylate polymer fraction of at least 50% by weight, based on the acrylate polymer dispersion.
A defoamer and a third stabilizing component C, for example in the form of nanocellulose, can then be added—advantageously with stirring—before, after further stirring and preferably moderate heating to, for example, 40 to 50° C., a second adhesion-promoting component B and a preservative are added becomes. The adhesion-promoting component B can be in the form of a glycol ester of a natural resin, in particular in the form of a triethylene glycol ester of rosin, whereas the preservative is in the form of a mixture of CIT (chloromethyl isothiazolinone) and MIT (methyl isothiazolinone). can be.
By means of the adhesive compositions listed above, it is possible, in particular via the use of a first binder component based on an acrylate polymer in conjunction with an adhesion-promoting component based on a resin compound and a stabilizing component, to substitute a binder containing chloroprene polymer while retaining all the favorable properties of chloroprene and at the same time guaranteeing it to enable a simple and inexpensive production as well as a processing that is harmless to health.
