Description
Stand der TechnikState of the art
The manufacturers of concrete and cement are among the main emitters of greenhouse gases. For example, "concrete production [...] is responsible for around 6 to 9% of all man-made CO 2 emissions, which is three to four times the magnitude of all air traffic." (cf. https://de.m.wikipedia .org/wiki/Beton; as of March 12, 2021) As a consequence, the industry is trying to save as much CO 2 as possible by using renewable energy sources in the production of cement, among other things, and to become climate-neutral by 2050 (cf. https:// www.vdz-online.de/dekarbonisierung; as of March 12, 2021).
The first step is therefore to develop building materials that are as environmentally friendly as possible and at the same time stable and thermally insulating. They should cause as little CO 2 emissions as possible during production and help reduce the energy consumption of the later buildings. At the same time, buildings of all kinds are also ideal for long-term storage of CO 2 - provided you use a material that has the smallest possible "carbon footprint" or that does not release the carbon bound in it into the atmosphere in the long term.
The second step in the direction of CO 2 savings in buildings is, of course, the use of building materials with a good insulating effect in order to keep heating energy consumption low. Some building material manufacturers are currently producing e.g. B. so-called "porous bricks" - bricks with small air pockets, which have a better insulating effect than the conventional solid material. Still others use e.g. B. pumice stone, which naturally has many fine-pored chambers in order to produce pumice concrete components with a good thermal insulation effect. Unfortunately, however, pumice is a finite raw material.
Erfindungsleistunginventive achievement
The invention described here involves replacing the pumice content in the last-mentioned building material mixture in whole or in part with biochar (e.g. pieces of charcoal). In a building material mixture with concrete, biochar has the advantage that its considerable thermal insulation performance (approx. 0.042 W/mK - comparable to cork) can significantly improve the energy balance of the building made entirely or partially of it.
At the same time, replacing part of the concrete with coal significantly improves the CO 2 balance of the material, since the carbon is permanently stored in the material mix.
Biochar can be used in differently adapted particle sizes - depending on the desired stability and/or thermal insulation performance of the blocks and/or panels.
Another advantage of using biochar compared to pumice is that it can be produced cheaply and, as a renewable raw material (taking into account the regeneration phases of the plant world), is available in almost infinite quantities.
In addition, charcoal has the advantage that it can hardly absorb any moisture and does not rot.
