The present invention relates to an apparatus and a process for allothermic fixed bed gasification of carbonaceous materials. In particular, it relates to allothermic fixed bed gasification and the use and optimization of in situ and secondary hot gas treatments. The described apparatus and method are particularly suitable for the production of a high quality product gas for energetic applications in small and medium plants.
Hintergrund der ErfindungBackground of the invention
They are particularly important in oil refineries, where petroleum and natural gas are converted to high value derivatives using processes such as hydrotreatment, catalytic reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, hydrocracking, visbreaking, coking, steam reforming, etc.
Similar concepts and methods are also used to recover gaseous streams, either from fossil fuels or from any other carbonaceous material. These processes are commonly referred to as gasification or reforming, and the gas streams can be used either for power generation or compound synthesis.
Thermal cracking, catalytic cracking, steam and dry reforming are some examples of thermochemical reactions that occur in a gasification process that converts carbonaceous material (hereinafter referred to as feed) into a fuel gas, typically called product gas. These reactions are predominantly endothermic and therefore always supported by a heat source.
When the feed is heated to a temperature above 400 C, thermal cracking occurs. If no gasification agent (oxygen, air, steam or carbon dioxide) is available then thermal cracking is the determining mechanism for conversion of the feed and the process is typically defined as pyrolysis or destructive distillation. Two different streams are generated, a solid phase formed from coke with inorganic substances and a gaseous phase formed from a gas mixture (hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, ...) and condensable components (tar, oxygenates, ...).
Otherwise, if a gasification agent such as oxygen, air, steam or carbon dioxide is present during the heating of the feedstock, further solid-gaseous and gaseous-gaseous reactions may take place and even if thermal cracking still occurs, the process will not exceed Pyrolysis, but as gasification.
- • Autothermal gasification uses air or oxygen as a gasifier. This leads to the partial combustion of the feedstock, where typically 20 to 40% of the chemical energy is released. The heat generated in this way is then provided for the conversion of the residual feedstock. Temperatures in excess of 1100 C can be achieved at the oxidation zone, and this high temperature can then be used for the thermal cracking of tars. Air gasification is the most common approach, but this results in a high concentration of nitrogen (~ 50%) and carbon dioxide (~ 20%) in the product gas, resulting in low calorific values;
- Allothermal gasification uses steam and / or carbon dioxide as a gasifying agent. In this case, steam and dry reforming are the most important gasification reactions and they require favorable temperatures above 800 ° C. Since the reactions involved are predominantly endothermic, heat must be supplied from the outside, for example by burning a portion of the coke or the product gas outside the reactor and transferring the heat through the reactor walls or a heat transfer medium. In this case, usually 20 to 40% of the chemical energy of the products used in the heating system. The amount of unreacted carbon in the solid product is typically higher than in autothermal processes, especially when the conditions for steam and dry reforming reactions are not optimal. Compared to autothermal gasification, allothermal gasification usually has better feedstock flexibility and more stable operation as the important parameters such as temperature and pressure are controlled externally.
The primary goal of gasification technologies is the efficient conversion of energy stored in various solid fuels into product gas, which in allothermal gasification usually consists of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane.
The industrial application of both autothermal and allothermal gasification has been used in large industrial plants since the end of the 18th century, especially extensively with coal.
The gasification of biomass is common in both industrialized and developing countries, in medium and small scale plants, usually for the supply of heat or electricity through the use of Rankine processes.
Rather, what is in a development phase, with very few commercially proven facilities, is a technology that converts biomass into a high quality product gas in small and medium sized facilities.
As a high quality product gas here is a gas is provided, in which the content of impurities in the product gas, that is, acid, alkali and metal compounds, ammonia and especially tar below the required limits of internal combustion engine, gas turbine or fuel cell manufacturers (tar concentration should less than 50 mg / Nm3).
The production of a high quality product gas has the advantage of being used directly in internal combustion engines, gas turbines or fuel cells, which should increase the thermodynamic efficiency of the process, especially in the small to medium size range, where the Rankine process is not attractive.
Considering the various impurities, tar removal is the biggest challenge, and so far very few commercial applications have been able to provide a low tar content in the product gas. High concentration of tar in the product gas will otherwise cause malfunction or clog the equipment by condensation in compression units, pipes and / or filters, thereby limiting commercial use.
As a promising alternative to the wet scrubber, hot gas treatment has received much attention lately. By this approach, tar compounds, even at or near carburetor operating temperatures, are converted to product gas through the use of catalytic cracking, steam and dry reforming reactions.
Hot gas treatment may be carried out in the primary reactor (which is referred to as in situ treatment) and / or this may also be carried out in a secondary reactor, downstream of the primary reactor.
In-situ gas treatment is usually a first approach to minimize the tar concentration in the product gas, and thus also the expense and expense of treating the product gas in a secondary reactor.
- – Teilweise organisches oder jegliches kohlenstoffhaltiges Material (feste Abfälle, Biomasse, etc.) wird von einem Trichter dem oberen Teil des Primärreaktors zugeführt;
- – Schneckenförderer, zwei Schieber- oder Drehventile oder eine Kombination von beidem wird für das kontinuierliche oder halbkontinuierliche Feststoffzuführen und -entladen verwendet;
- – Der Primärreaktor umfasst eine Reaktionskammer, ein System zum Zuführen und Entladen, ein axiales Rohr für Heißdampfinjektion, ein elektrisches Heizungssystem an der Reaktoraußenwand und Wärmedämmung;

- The primary reactor comprises a reaction chamber, a system for feeding and discharging, an axial tube for superheated steam injection, an electrical heating system on the outer wall of the reactor and thermal insulation;
- - As soon as the feed material is fed to the primary reactor chamber, intensive and rapid heating takes place through the high temperature reactor wall and through direct contact with superheated steam, which is generated outside the primary reactor and injected through a coaxial tube into the upper part of the reactor.
- The feedstock will first release water / steam, then the pyrolysis reactions will become Cracking organic materials and produce condensable constituents, permanent gases and coke.
- - Superheated steam at temperatures up to 600 ° C acts both as a heat source and as a gasification agent to convert coke and condensables into product gas.
- - The gaseous phase, consisting of steam, condensables and permanent gases flow to the bottom of the primary reactor and there by a lateral opening in the direction of a secondary reactor, which contains in its interior a fixed bed of calcined dolomite.

- The secondary reactor is designed for hot gas treatment, especially for the destruction of tar compounds by catalytic cracking, dry and steam reforming reactions. Dolomite is the catalyst chosen, but alternatively olivine, nickel, coke, ash or fluid catalytic cracking catalyst can be used for this purpose. Manganese oxides are additionally added to the calcined dolomite to improve the efficiency of hydrogen sulfide removal.
- - The secondary reactor is also heated by electric ovens, so that the temperature is maintained at up to 800 ° C. The fixed bed of dolomite is placed on a porous ceramic material and replacement of the catalyst requires cooling and unhooking of the secondary reactor.
- - Both the primary and the secondary reactor are vertical. Thereafter, the product gas leaves the upper part of the secondary reactor and can be used in the starting temperature or previously cooled by heat exchangers, depending on the intended final use.
- At the end, a fan can be used to control the pressure in the reactor and to feed the product gas to its final use.
Zusammenfassung der ErfindungSummary of the invention
The invention relates to important developments in the apparatus for allothermic fixed bed gasification.
The invention also relates to important developments in the process, and provides optimized conditions for catalytic cracking, steam and dry reforming reactions.
Under the gasification process, the inclusion of in-situ hot gas treatment is of great importance. This will allow a low tar concentration already at the exit of the primary reactor and reduce the expense of removing the remaining tar in the secondary reactor.
In order to meet the requirements for efficient in situ hot gas treatment, adequate temperature and residence time, the gas phase and kinetics of catalytic cracking, steam and dry reforming reactions must be provided and optimized.
This is achieved in the present invention by permitting the gas phase to pass through the coke bed and in the pore burner heating system.
Gasification coke has a surface area of up to 2000 m 2 / g and even if a large part of this surface is in the inner part of the coke particles and therefore less of the penetrating gas phase is available, the heat transfer between the solid and gaseous phase is still high enough to allow approximately thermal equilibrium conditions between the two phases.
Also, the large surface area coke and the eventual presence of the alkali and transition metals that act as catalysts result in tar treatment efficiencies that outperform the typical catalysts such as calcined dolomite, olivine, fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalyst or biomass ash. The coke also has the advantage of being continuously generated inside the reactor. Thus no addition or regeneration is needed.
The operating parameters, and hence catalytic cracking kinetics, steam and dry reforming reactions are chosen in the primary and secondary reactors to optimize tar removal efficiency and carbon conversion.
As described above, the developments of the present invention with respect to the apparatus are described as follows:
Although electrical resistance heating meets the described prior art, this technique is not suitable for commercial use.
Heating the reactor using conventional free-flame burners would also be problematic since these burners typically produce a concentrated heat source at high temperature and then flue gases at a lower temperature. In fact, to provide a homogeneous high temperature distribution with free flame burners, the normal solution is to use several small flames and / or constantly Heated surface to move, which increases the cost and complexity.
Another problem with traditional free-flame burners is safety. Several small flames require a "plenum", that is, a reservoir in which a combustible mixture of fuel gas and air is present. Because the plenum is positioned below the flame in a conventional gas burner, flame spread and temperatures above the auto-ignition limits can cause a relapse. To prevent this, the plenum must be cooled to reduce risks, increasing complexity and cost.
The present invention uses a special type of burner, where the heat is mainly transmitted by infrared radiation. This type of burner is called a pore burner, as in the patent
Pore burners are nearly as flexible as electric heaters, but much more efficient from an exergetic point of view.
Pore burners have no apparent flame, instead the combustion of the fuel / air mixture takes place inside the burner and most of the heat energy is absorbed by the porous material, which raises the temperature and makes heat radiation the dominant mechanism of heat transfer.
In fact, more than 50% of the fuel energy can be transmitted through the infrared radiation of the pore burners. The heat is distributed evenly over the surface, so that no hot spots occur and therefore a long life of the material is achieved.
The heat transfer from a pore burner to the heated surface depends mainly on the temperature difference between the two surfaces. Therefore, increasing or decreasing the temperature of the porous burner can easily modulate the heat transfer.
The secondary reactor is also indirectly heated either by pore burners or by the flue gases from the pore burner of the primary reactor, so that the operating temperature is maintained within the secondary reactor both in the gaseous and in the solid phase.
Another advantage compared to the traditional free flame burner is that the pore burner technology does not require any special construction changes for different types of fuels. In fact, the same burner can be operated either by traditional fuels or by the product gas. This allows natural gas or LPG to be used during commissioning and then, when the system reaches stable operation, to change to the product gas. This makes the process self-supporting, minimizing fuel costs and fostering economic viability.
In the present invention, heat is only generated by the pore burners to achieve the required amount for the operating temperatures in both the solid and gas phases. Steam can still be injected in the top of the primary reactor, but as a reactant, not for heating. The use of pore burners and permeation of the gaseous phase through the fixed bed height is considered to be a simple means of providing the required temperature in the solid and gaseous phases, especially in the small scale application.
To reach operating temperature, the reactor is made using a material that can withstand temperatures up to 1100 ° C. In order to be able to work efficiently at such high temperatures, pore burner technology from the cited prior art is used in the reactor wall, as described above.
In fact, pore burner technology is very effective for providing high temperatures. It is capable of providing up to 2,000 C, and provides current density of more than 3 MW / m 2 , which is much higher than what is required in the present invention.
The fixed bed of the secondary reactor is continuous or semi-continuous loading and unloading, for example by screw conveyors or double valve systems. In the prior art described above, the secondary reactor had a fixed bed, which had to be removed for replacement, so that the performance of the hot gas treatment over time was not constant.
If a higher heat transfer between the feedstock and the primary reactor wall is required, then the heat exchange area can be increased by one or more internal extended surfaces (fin) by the height of the heat transfer zone. This measure is efficient in order to increase the heat transfer and reduce the radial temperature gradients in the primary reactor.
A ceramic filter element can be used in the downstream secondary reactor, if the desired final use also the dust concentration in the product gas is a concern.
As for the method in the present invention, below follows:
The prior art describes an operating temperature of 800 ° C, even if the measured by thermocouples inside the primary reactor is at most 700 ° C.
However, the kinetics of catalytic cracking, steam and dry reforming reactions are cheaper at temperatures above 800 C, with the observed conversion of tar and coke much higher.
Therefore, as a first measure in the present invention, the temperature of the gaseous and solid phases is increased.
Control of the temperature is accomplished by thermocouples along the axial portion of the primary reactor and adjusting the feed rate and heat input so that the lower portion of the reactor internal volume is maintained at the operating temperature range.
In particular, the axial temperature of the packed bed inside the primary reactor is controlled so that two different zones are established. The upper part, herein called the heat transfer zone, goes down from the feed inlet to the point where the operating temperature range is first reached, with a temperature gradient from the atmosphere to the operating range.
The second zone, however, here called high-temperature zone, includes the point where the first operating temperature range is reached, to the point where the gas phase leaves the bottom of the primary reactor.
The heat transfer zone serves primarily for heating the solid and the gaseous phase up to the operating temperature, pyrolysis being the determining process. By contrast, the high-temperature zone is intended for in-situ hot gas treatment, in particular for tar removal and also for coke reforming.
Since the heat transfer area between solid and gaseous phase within the primary reactor is high, and approximately thermal equilibrium can be assumed, the solid and gaseous phases will have nearly the same temperature. Therefore, it is important to maintain the gas phase within the operating temperature range and to provide sufficient residence time to guarantee optimal conditions for in situ tar removal by catalytic cracking, steam and dry reforming reactions, and low tar content already at the exit of the primary reactor.
Another important practical result obtained by the high temperature zone is the higher efficiency of coke reforming. In fact, in the prior art, only 40% of the energy products were in the form of product gas, while almost 50% was in the form of unreacted carbon. This low gasification performance is very similar to conventional pyrolysis processes where only the volatile fraction is converted to a gas stream and shows that steam reforming of coke does not occur in any convenient means within the primary reactor of the prior art.
The low coke gasification performance of the prior art is consistent with the kinetics of coke reforming, which is not favorable below 800 ° C. This also means that the product gas produced in the prior art described, can not be used for heating the reactor, since the gas yield is low.
The present invention optimizes the kinetics of coke reforming by increasing the process temperature and providing the necessary residence time to obtain very low levels of unconverted carbon, thereby maximizing gas yield and allowing for both process maintenance and power generation is.
As for the supply of water / steam as a gasification agent, waste heat can be used to generate steam, otherwise it is controlled by the moisture of the feedstock or by liquid injection.
In the secondary reactor, carried downstream of the primary, not only tar and hydrogen sulfide are removed, but also ammonia, acid alkali and metal compounds and particles, so that no wet scrubber is needed.
To accomplish this, the secondary reactor bed consists of a mixture of neutralizing reactants, adsorbers and catalysts and the product gas is passed through it either upstream or downstream.
Typical reactants for removing alkali compounds are bauxites, bentonites, kaolinites, zeolites, and for acid neutralization are dolomite, manganese oxides, zeolite Ca, slag, lime, sorbacal, Cu-olivine, and calcium / barium carbonate-crystal mixtures.
Catalysts such as olivine, dolomite, nickel, coke, ash, and fluid catalytic cracking catalysts can also be added to the secondary reactor to further reduce the tar content of the product gas.
The bed material of the secondary reactor is also effective in keeping particles within its structure discharged with it, thus avoiding the use of cyclone filters.
