Abstract
The known Tensiometerbauarten are quite expensive by the use of expensive measuring instruments. The invention enables a qualitative assessment of soil moisture by a cost-effective and easily readable display element. The device for indicating soil moisture consists of an airtight, filled with water hollow body, which has a porous, permeable Kontktfläche at the bottom. This contact surface is gas-tight in the water-soaked state and is in contact with the soil. The dry soil withdraws the hollow body via the capillaries of the contact surface water, whereby a negative pressure is generated in the interior of the hollow body. A part of the hollow body consists of an elastic material, which deforms directly visibly by the negative pressure, or its deformation is indicated by an immediately connected visible display element. The degree of deformation can be interpreted as a measure of the drought in the soil. The elastic part of the hollow body must be made strong enough that the change in volume, which he experiences under negative pressure, is reversible and water is again absorbed into the interior of the hollow body. The tensiometer consists of a hollow body (10) which is filled with water (2). The part with the porous contact surface (11) of the tensiometer is in the soil (1). At the porous part (11), an intermediate piece (12) is airtight connected. On the intermediate piece (12) of the flexible part (13) is inserted, which has a negative pressure by deformation, which can be interpreted as a measure of the soil moisture. Due to the embodiment of the display element in the form of a flexible hollow body, which deforms visibly under negative pressure, a cost-effective and easy to read display of soil moisture is made possible on a Tensiometer.
Description
The invention relates to a device for measuring and displaying the soil moisture in particular in planters for the interior by means of capillary force. Such measuring devices are known as Tensiometer.
They consist of an airtight, filled with water hollow body, which has a porous, permeable part at the bottom, which is gas-tight in the water-soaked state. This part of the tensiometer is put into the soil. The dry soil withdraws the hollow body via the capillaries of the porous part of water, it creates a suction stress, whereby a negative pressure is generated in the interior of the hollow body. Capillary forces in the soil draw the water to the ground against the negative pressure in the hollow body until equilibrium between the capillary forces and the negative pressure in the interior arises. If the dry soil is irrigated, the suction tension decreases and again water enters through the capillaries of the porous part into the hollow body, whereby the negative pressure decreases. The negative pressure inside the tensiometer is thus a measure of the soil moisture.

The known Tensiometerbauarten that measure the negative pressure by means of a mercury column, a mechanical pointer instrument or with an electronic pressure transducer, are quite expensive by the use of expensive measuring instruments or include, as in the case of the mercury sen- sor, toxic components that do not allow use in the private sector.
The aim of the invention is therefore to provide a tensiometer with a display element that is very inexpensive and easy to read and allows a qualitative assessment of soil moisture. This makes it possible, for example, in indoor plants to provide each planter with its own Tensiometer. This ensures that the plants are sufficiently supplied with water.
The invention solves the problem by the fact that a visible part of the hollow body consists of a specially adapted to the task elastic part having a directly visible deformation under negative pressure. The degree of deformation can be interpreted as a measure of the drought in the soil. Thus, a deficiency of the plants with water can already be seen before the plant is damaged.
The capillary forces and thus the suction tension at the tensiometer depend on the water content of the soil. If there is no suction at the tensiometer, the soil is saturated, ie all pores are filled with water. On the other hand, if the suction tension at the tensiometer is high, this means that the plant must absorb water against this suction tension to cover its water requirement. When the so-called wilting point is reached, the capillary flow in the plant breaks off and it wilts. The optimal suction stress varies for each plant type and location condition. As a guideline for many plant species, the range between 150 and 250 mbar can be specified. At least 400 mbar should be irrigated. In the range of 0 to about 50 mbar, the earth is saturated, d. H. the pores are completely or mostly filled with water. In this state, the microorganisms lack oxygen and there are anaerobic conditions, which can lead to the formation of rot, which damages the plant. In the areas mentioned, the flexible part should have a degree of deformation which allows a conclusion to be too high or too low soil moisture.
The flexible part of the hollow body should be designed so that the deformation under vacuum is clearly visible. The extent of the deformation should be as linear as possible to the pressure drop in order to draw a conclusion about the current moisture content in the soil.
The claim of the plant to the soil moisture depends on its kind and on the site conditions. Therefore, it will be useful to perform different solid hollow body, which approximately take into account the water needs of each plant and the site conditions. Thus, a rather low stability of the elastic part of the hollow body would be suitable for high water requirement, so that a maximum deformation is reached even at 200 mbar vacuum. For a stiffer design with lower water requirements, the maximum deformation could be set at 400 mbar vacuum.
The flexible part of the hollow body is removable. The lower part of the hollow body including the porous part is filled with water for startup. Then the flexible part will be back attached and the end with the porous part is inserted into the soil to be measured.
The interior of the elastic member does not necessarily have to be filled with water. However, the trapped air expands under vacuum, so that more water must penetrate the wall of the porous part in order to achieve a corresponding negative pressure in the hollow body than when fully filled without air entrapment. In the quantitative measuring tensiometers described above, such air pockets in the hollow body are avoided as far as possible. However, for a simple indication that only wants to make a qualitative assessment, air entrapment is only relevant in that the moisture content reading after irrigation takes a few minutes because the compressed volume of the air must be counterbalanced by additional water passing through the porous part. The period of drying of the planter is already much longer anyway, so that here the duration of the volume compensation does not matter. If you want to avoid this air entrapment, so a closable filling can be attached to the top of the cavity, which allows the entire cavity to be completely filled with water.
The design of the elastic part must have the goal of achieving the greatest possible visible deformation. For example, in the simplest case, a piece of tubing may be used as the elastic member which is plugged onto an open socket on the hollow body and sealed on the other side with a plug or closure element which applies a weight force to the tube. If now the negative pressure inside the device, the hose kinks inwards and loses its supporting effect for the closure element, so that this buckles down. In case of a sudden buckling, however, only one measuring point would be displayed. It is more advantageous to achieve a continuous deformation under increasing negative pressure. With a uniform deformation behavior, the user can qualitatively interpret the moisture content and relate it to the present planting situation.
An approach is therefore also a curved hollow body, similar to that used in manometers. In the arc, the convex surface is larger than the concave inner surface, so that contracts at a pressure difference between the interior of the hollow body and the outer atmospheric pressure of the arc.
In a further possible embodiment, the elastic part has different wall thicknesses at the front and back which at low pressure in the hollow body first dent the thinner wall and thereby the elastic part performs a movement in the direction of the thin wall. The variation of wall thicknesses and the introduction of reinforcements allows a variety of deformations of the elastic part can be achieved, including a twisting, which can be seen with a suitable design of the element, such as lateral arms, also clearly visible changes in shape under negative pressure.
Another approach is the design analogous to a bellows that shortens under vacuum. If a tubular hollow body is provided only on one side with folds, which can contract, and the other side is pliable, but not shortened, this body will curve in the direction of the side with the bellows.
The elastic part of the hollow body must be made strong enough that the change in volume, which he experiences under negative pressure, is completely reversible. If this part were too thin-walled, it would have no power to draw the water back into the interior of the hollow body after irrigation from the soil through the porous part.
Two possible embodiments are explained in more detail below with reference to the drawings.
