Wasserentsalzung ist bekannt zur Gewinnung von Trinkwasser, beispielsweise durch Elektrolyse. Diese ist jedoch sehr energieaufwendig, weil hierzu entweder sehr hohe Temperaturen benötigt werden oder aber elektrischer Strom. Der hierzu benötigte Druck ist zwar sehr groß und bewegt sich im Bereich von über 50 bar bei derzeit vorhandenen Vorrichtungen bzw. Osmosemembranen. Er kann sogar 80 bis 100 bar betragen. Dazu kann eine entsprechend lange Leitung, sei es als flexibler Schlauch oder als starre Leitung, von dem versenkten Quader bis zur Meeresoberfläche bzw. bis zur Pumpe führen.
