Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a tool for machining workpieces, in particular for milling cast iron workpieces, wherein the tool consists of a coated cemented carbide body having at least one layer of TiAlN.
The invention further relates to a method for coating substrate bodies by means of magnetron sputtering for deposition or multiple layers of Ti x Al 1-x N.
For machining metallic materials such as cast iron, coated tools are used. The tool wear depends essentially on how resistant the cutting edge of the tool is against the separation of individual fragments or the formation of cracks. If parts of the coating have already been removed during machining, the wear progresses faster, so that after a short time the tool is unusable. The selection of the coating is of considerable importance, since the coating properties essentially decide on the wear progress. For example, in the past, there have been proposed tools consisting of a cemented carbide substrate body which is multilayer coated by CVD. Possible coatings consist for example of TiCN and an outer layer of α-Al 2 O 3 . Likewise, a number of PVD coatings based on the TiAlN substance system are known.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for producing a tool and a tool which has a reduced tool wear in a machining, in particular when milling cast workpieces.
This object is achieved on the one hand by the tool according to claim 1, which is inventively characterized in that the layer of Ti x Al 1-x N with 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.8, the crystallites contained in this layer is a size ≤ 100 nm and that this layer is composed of several laminar layers to a layer thickness of 0.1 .mu.m to 3 .mu.m.
Surprisingly, such a cutting tool exhibits a significant improvement in service life over a single-layer TiAlN film produced by PVD with alloyed or stuffed targets. The tool can be used in particular without the use of cooling lubricants, which has the advantage that no additional high disposal costs for the coolant or the machining waste arise.
The object is further achieved by the method according to claim 6, which is characterized in that the coating of Ti x Al 1-x N is made by a reactive PVD method, wherein by magnetron sputtering in an N 2 atmosphere of aluminum and titanium has been released in the desired amount and after reaction to Ti x Al 1-x N where 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.8 has been deposited on a substrate body, wherein the substrate body is passed several times at a speed at the cathode, that in this movement only one nanocrystalline layer is formed and the passing movement is repeated until the desired layer thickness of 0.01 microns to 3 microns is reached. The high wear resistance of the tool produced in this way is apparently based on the use of pure metal targets, ie in particular only one pure titanium target and one pure aluminum target. These two targets are arranged sufficiently close to each other, so that on the one hand the formation of hexagonal, relatively soft AlN is avoided and on the other hand result by cyclic passing of the substrate body at the metallic sources concentration gradients in the growing layer. This favors the nanostructured formation of the hard material layer with very small crystallite size. The layer structure is thereby more compact and resistant to abrasion.
Advantageous embodiments are described in the
Thus, several x Ti can Al 1-x N-layers on a cemented carbide body preferably be disposed respectively in the ratio Ti: Al differ and the thickness of all the Ti x Al 1-x N-layers is a maximum of 10 microns. In a two-layer variant, the inner layer has a larger Al content, preferably with x <0.5, and the outer layer has a lower Al content with 0.6 ≦ x ≦ 0.8.
The respective ratio of the titanium and the aluminum in the TiAlN coating can be varied in that the bombardment or the impact energy of the gas atoms and / or gas ions is set accordingly different, so that, for example, more aluminum atoms dissolved out of the aluminum target at the same time are called titanium atoms from the titanium target. The total layer thickness of the TiAlN layer is between 0.5 .mu.m and 10 .mu.m, whereby preferably several laminar layers of different composition have been deposited on top of each other, each of which can have a layer thickness of 0.01 .mu.m to 3 .mu.m.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, in the Ti x Al 1-x N layer or partial layer, the titanium can be completely or partially replaced by zirconium and / or hafnium, since these transition metals form a colored nitride. In this layer, the aluminum can be completely or partially replaced by silicon and / or boron and / or carbon according to a further embodiment of the invention. By changing the layer composition, other layer colors can be produced compared to the yellow metal nitride. Due to the reduced conductivity of said non-metals, voltage pulsed sputtering is used. In the case of coating, in each case several coating sources (targets) can be used simultaneously next to each other, each individual target in each case consisting of only one single metal.
The process according to the invention has various advantages: On the one hand, the production of the coating of the tools is considerably cheaper because the production of the hitherto conventional metal targets with stoppers of a different composition or alloying of different metals is eliminated. The bombardment rates and bombardment energies are easier and more precise to set with the use of unalloyed metal targets, so that depending on the addition of aluminum, silicon or carbon atoms, the golden color can be gradually varied to a red or dark red and finally violet or dark gray color. This is done in practice by varying the bombardment rate of the aluminum targets. Differently colored layers make it easy to determine the degree of wear of this layer. Finally, targeted layer compositions can be used to produce an improved adhesion of the coating to the substrate body and of the different layers with one another. In particular, the separated metal targets allow the use of aluminum targets without copper bonding plate, which was previously required in the stuffed titanium plates due to the low thermal conductivity.
The layers produced have led to a significant reduction in the wear of the tool or to an increase in the achievable until the usability of the tool Fräsweges.
In a specific embodiment, a hard metal substrate body of the composition 94 wt .-% WC, 6 wt .-% Co has been coated in a sputter coating machine with a multi-layer hard material layer having a thickness of about 6 microns. The PVD system used has a total of four cathodes, with two cathodes arranged symmetrically on each side. The cathodes consist of two aluminum targets and two titanium targets each. Atomization takes place in an Ar / N 2 plasma (gas flow Ar = 500 sccm and N 2 = 130 sccm) by means of DC sputtering at a constant power of 9.5 kW each on the titanium targets. The power at the Al targets has been varied between 2 kW to 7 kW, whereby different aluminum contents are generated in the deposited layers.
The manufactured cutting insert, which has a multilayer TiAlN layer, is used for face milling of ductile iron ingots. In a first trial, carbide inserts are made investigated the same production lot, which were coated on the same system with each segmented targets, ie Ti plates and inserted Al plugs. The milling paths achievable with this conventional coating were 4,500 mm in a first test and 9,000 mm in a repeated test.
In contrast, the inserts coated according to the present invention have provided milling paths of 15,000 mm in two different tests. The increase in the milling length is thus 3 times or 1.7 times the value.
In a further experiment, a hard metal of the composition 93% by weight WC, 7% by weight Co. was used as the base substrate. In the conventional multilayer coating using titanium plates with Al plugs, milling paths of 6,000 mm could be achieved. By contrast, in the case of the multilayer coating according to the invention, the milling paths were 9,000 mm and 7,500 mm, respectively. Again, this results in an increased milling length, which is 1.25 or 1.5 times as large.
