Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell system according to the closer defined in the preamble of
Fuel cells or fuel cell systems are known from the general state of the art. They can be used, for example, to generate electric power for driving vehicles and / or in stationary systems for generating electrical power.
The problem with this cited prior art lies in a comparatively complex system. Today's fuel cell systems attempt to dispense with a cathode recirculation, since these, in the past typically due to the necessary humidification, in today's PEM fuel cell systems is no longer necessary. To realize a cathode recirculation exclusively for the production of oxygen-depleted air is correspondingly complicated and expensive in today's fuel cells. In addition to the additional control effort additional space is required and increases the mass of the fuel cell system.
Another disadvantage associated with the cited prior art is that in the implementation of the corresponding method when the fuel cell is restarted after a longer standstill, the restart takes a very long time, since first an oxygen-depleted air is generated in the region of the cathode recirculation must be, which can be used therein for rinsing the anode compartment.
The object of the present invention is now to avoid these disadvantages and to provide a method or a fuel cell for carrying out the method, which is simple and efficient, can start very quickly and yet significantly reduces the problem of degradation.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the method having the features in the characterizing part of
The inventive method provides that during operation of the fuel cell system exhaust air from the cathode space is cached, and that when starting the fuel cell, the exhaust air from the storage device is supplied to the anode compartment, wherein the fuel is supplied together with or after the stored exhaust air to the anode compartment , The exhaust air from the cathode compartment of the fuel cell system is typically depleted in oxygen due to the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell itself and has, if anything, only a small proportion of residual oxygen. This depleted of oxygen residual air can then be cached easily and efficiently, in which case the typically occurring pressure of the exhaust air is sufficient to store the required relatively small volume of exhaust air. With this exhaust air can then be rinsed when starting the fuel cell of the fuel cell either the anode compartment before the metering of fuel, for which an amount of exhaust air in the order of about the volume of the anode compartment is necessary, or the oxygen-depleted cached exhaust air is in the anode compartment added dosed fuel, which, it has been shown the inventors, a "blurring" of the front between hydrogen and oxygen takes place. This also already significantly reduces the degradation.
The method has the advantage over the prior art that the fuel cell can be started directly, and that so immediately electric power is available. It is also possible that can be dispensed with a cathode circuit, as it is absolutely necessary in the above-mentioned prior art. Instead, only one storage volume is necessary. However, this is typically much simpler in terms of functionality and design than a cathode circuit which, in addition to the required construction volume, always requires a recirculation conveyor, which in turn consumes energy.
Thus, the method according to the invention allows a simple efficient design of the fuel cell system and allows a very fast start with a very fast electrical power extraction from the fuel cell. However, it can massively reduce the degradation of the fuel cell, extending the life of the fuel cell.
In a particularly favorable and advantageous development of the method according to the invention, it is provided that the stored exhaust air is supplied to the fuel flowing to the fuel cell during the starting phase. The exhaust air that has been temporarily stored can be used to "blur" the hydrogen / oxygen front in the anode compartment in the above sense. This already leads to a significant reduction in degradation. The advantage over rinsing is that a smaller volume is required and thus a lower storage volume of the storage device is needed. This saves space and weight.
The exhaust air can be stored during operation in accordance with a particularly favorable development of the method according to the invention at a time at which there is a low cathode stoichiometry. At a point in time in which a comparatively small excess of oxygen is conveyed into the fuel cell, it can be assumed that the oxygen contained in the delivered supply air is used up almost completely. Such a time is then ideal for storing the exhaust air, since the stored exhaust air then contains a minimum of residual oxygen and thus the maximum counteracts the degradation in the admixture to the fuel or when rinsing the anode compartment.
The supply of the stored exhaust air can take place in accordance with a further very favorable embodiment of the method according to the invention in dependence of a hydrogen concentration present in the anode region before starting. In the anode region, that is to say in the anode space and, if appropriate, in a recirculation arranged around the anode space, residual hydrogen may possibly still be present. In particular, if an anode recirculation is present, the hydrogen content is very often measured anyway to determine when water and / or gas must be discharged from the anode area. If such a hydrogen sensor is present anyway, it can be used ideally to determine whether hydrogen is still present in this area. Accordingly, the dosage of the stored oxygen-depleted residual air can be dosed accordingly and adapted to the hydrogen concentration still present there. If a hydrogen sensor is not present in any case, such can in principle be installed in order to detect a residual hydrogen concentration in the anode chamber or in the anode region, ie the anode chamber and a recirculation line around the anode chamber, if present.
- – Trocknen
- – Oxidieren von Restsauerstoff.
- - Separation of liquid water
- - Dry
- - Oxidizing residual oxygen.
The exhaust air can be treated accordingly, in particular it can be freed from liquid water and optionally dried. This prevents possible flooding of the anode region by water contained in the stored exhaust air. In addition, in addition to the separation of liquid water and the drying of an oxidation of residual oxygen can take place, for example in an oxidation cartridge, which is replaced from time to time. Such oxidation further reduces the level of residual oxygen, so that the stored and thus pretreated exhaust air is even better suited to reduce the mechanisms of degradation.
In a further very advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, it can also be provided that the oxygen concentration of the exhaust air is detected, wherein the exhaust air is stored again when the oxygen concentration is lower than the previously measured during the same phase of operation of the fuel cell system oxygen concentration. Typically, one will proceed so that comparatively early after the start of the fuel cell in optionally empty storage device immediately stores exhaust air from the fuel cell in order to be prepared for a restart even at a short time. This exhaust air is then optionally provided with more residual oxygen, as later during operation accumulating exhaust air. A simple measurement of the oxygen concentration in the exhaust air and a temporal storage of these measurements can be used to determine whether there is currently an oxygen concentration which is lower than all previously measured oxygen concentrations during this phase of operation. In this case, the stored exhaust air is discharged to the environment and the exhaust air currently present with the lower oxygen concentration is stored again.
In an alternative embodiment of this, it can of course also be designed with the use of two hydrogen sensors, that the oxygen content is measured accordingly both in the current exhaust air and in the stored exhaust air, and the exhaust air is stored again when the oxygen concentration in the current exhaust air is lower than in the already stored exhaust air. Compared to the method described above, the control effort is reduced here, but a second sensor is necessary.
The invention further describes a fuel cell system for carrying out a method according to one of the embodiments described above.
The fuel cell system has a storage device connected to an exhaust duct from a cathode space of a fuel cell and a fuel supply line to an anode space of the fuel cell, respectively. A fuel cell system, which otherwise can be constructed almost arbitrarily, must therefore each have only an additional storage device or a storage volume, which can be connected to both the exhaust duct from the cathode compartment and the fuel supply to the anode compartment switchable to carry out the method according to the invention.
As already mentioned, the method according to the invention and the fuel cell for carrying out the method according to the invention are used in particular to reduce the problem of degradation due to a hydrogen / oxygen front passing through the anode compartment of the fuel cell when starting the fuel cell. This allows a longer life of the fuel cell can be achieved.
This advantage is particularly useful if the fuel cell is often turned off and restarted, since in particular when starting the fuel cell, the problem occurs. The method according to the invention and the fuel cell which is suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention can be used in particular in mobile systems for generating electrical power, since frequent starting, stopping and restarting are typical of such systems. Such mobile systems may be, for example, land vehicles or watercraft, in which the fuel cell is typically used for generating electrical drive energy and / or for generating electrical energy. Another use in a mobile system is also conceivable in aircraft, in which the fuel cell as electrical power supply unit for an electrical vehicle electrical system is becoming increasingly important, and similar to other vehicles turned off and restarted comparatively often.
Further advantageous embodiments of the method according to the invention and suitable for carrying out the method fuel cell resulting from the embodiment and from the remaining dependent claims.
