Description
The invention relates to a photoconductive antenna array for receiving pulsed terahertz radiation.
On the photoconductive layer, an electrically conductive antenna structure is applied with a gap of typically 5 .mu.m to 10 .mu.m in length, which becomes electrically conductive at the moment of irradiation with laser light and switches the dipole ready to receive during this time. Metals such as gold, silver, copper or their alloys as well as metallic layer systems such as Ti-Pd-Au, Ti-Pt-Au or Ti-Ni-Ag can be used as material for the electrically conductive antenna structure.
- The mechanical displacement path requires a relatively large amount of space in the terahertz spectrometer
- - A fast mechanical shift, which allows the detection of the temporal Pulsspektums with video frequency, is very complex,
- - Since the measured values for the determination of the terahertz amplitude must be detected in chronological succession according to the displacement steps, the measurement signal is very noisy, especially in a fast measurement because of the short measurement time.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a photoconductive terahertz receiver for pulsed terahertz radiation, which requires no or only a short delay path in the beam path of the pulsed laser light for driving and also has a good signal / noise ratio in the fast measured value detection with video frequency.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the photoconductive terahertz receiver according to
The first solution to the problem according to the invention is that the output signals of the staggered receiving dipoles are amplified individually, so that the amplified output signals form a measure of the time course of the pulsed terahertz radiation.
After each terahertz pulse of each receiving dipole, the antenna array according to the invention delivers a signal which corresponds to a specific period of the terahertz pulse. Therefore, no additional delay path is required to record the time course of a terahertz pulse when the number of signals supplied by the antenna array is sufficiently selected for the respective measurement purpose. The running distances of the terahertz pulse and the counter-rotating laser pulse between two adjacent receiving dipoles with a distance a cause a time difference T2 of the signals of adjacent receiving dipoles, which can be calculated with the following relationship: T2 = a / (cT + cL). Here, cT is the propagation velocity of the terahertz radiation and cL is the propagation velocity of the laser radiation in the detector material. If one assumes approximately that both propagation velocities are approximately equal and are determined by a common refractive index n, one obtains for the time difference T2 = a * n / (2 * c), where c is the speed of light in vacuum. If, for example, the antenna array consists of z equidistantly arranged receiving dipoles, one obtains time-staggered output signals over an entire time interval T = (z-1) T2 = a * n (z-1) / (2 * c).
The second solution to the problem according to the invention is that the pulsed laser radiation is directed perpendicularly to the terahertz radiation and simultaneously impinges on the gaps of the staggered receiving dipoles.
The output signals of the staggered receiving dipoles are individually amplified, so that the amplified output signals form a measure of the time course of the pulsed terahertz radiation.
The trajectories of the terahertz pulse between two adjacent receive dipoles with a distance a cause a time difference T1 of the signals of adjacent receive dipoles, which can be calculated with the relationship: T1 = a / cT. Here, cT is the propagation speed of the terahertz radiation in the detector material. Thus one obtains for the time difference T1 = a / cT. If, for example, the antenna array consists of z equidistantly arranged receiving dipoles, one obtains time-staggered output signals over a total time interval T = (z-1) T1 = a (z-1) / cT.
For technical reasons, the number z of receiving dipoles of the antenna array can not be increased arbitrarily. If, however, the temporal resolution of the terahertz pulse required for the measuring purpose is not achieved with the practically realizable number of receiving dipoles, the entire photoconductive antenna array with equidistantly arranged receiving dipoles in the direction of propagation of the device can, according to
Another advantage of the inventive photoconductive terahertz receiver according to
According to
A further possibility of realizing the inventive photoconductive antenna array for receiving pulsed terahertz radiation is that the pulsed laser radiation is guided in a strip waveguide and that the gaps of the metallic reception dipoles with the semiconductor material with a short relaxation time in the femtosecond range are directly above or below the strip-shaped Waveguides are located. As a result of the direct optical contact between the strip-shaped waveguide and the absorbing semiconductor material, in each case a part of the laser radiation passes from the strip-shaped waveguide into the semiconductor material in the gap of the receiving dipoles. The laser radiation is absorbed in the semiconductor material and the corresponding receiving dipole becomes electrically conductive and delivers a signal that is proportional to the terahertz amplitude.
According to the invention, the width of the receiving dipoles in the vicinity of the gap is substantially smaller than their spacing a in the direction of the strip-shaped waveguide. Since the laser pulse guided in the strip-shaped waveguide requires a transit time in order to pass through the width of the reception dipoles in the vicinity of the gap, the terahertz amplitude is averaged over this transit time. In compliance with the condition according to the invention of a narrow width, the influence of this averaging on the measurement result can be neglected. A sufficiently small width is present if this is equal to the running distance of the laser pulse in the strip-shaped waveguide, which is covered during the pulse duration of the laser radiation. If the pulse duration is, for example, 100 fs and the propagation speed in the
According to
In
This antenna array has the advantage that it is easy to manufacture because the receiving dipoles are arranged in one plane and can therefore be fabricated using a standard photolithographic process. So that the reception dipoles of the array are hit in succession by the laser radiation according to
